SRINAGAR: Burhan Muzaffar Wani, the 22-year-old commander of the terror group Hizbul Mujahideen, was killed in an operation on Friday in a big breakthrough for security forces in Jammu and Kashmir.
Burhan Wani featured in videos circulated on Facebook and WhatsApp aimed at recruiting young Kashmiri men for terror.
He was hunted down by security forces in an intelligence-led operation and killed along with two other militants in south Kashmir, say the police.
Curfew-like restrictions have been imposed in in Burhan Wani's hometown of Tral, while protests broke out in several places. School board exams scheduled for tomorrow have been postponed.
He was among the most wanted militants in Jammu and Kashmir though he may personally never have fired a single shot.
Wani, whose father was a school principal, joined the deadly terror group at 15 after his brother was allegedly attacked by the Army in 2010.
Born to a wealthy family in Tral in the southern part of Kashmir, Burhan Wani represented the disturbing profile of young, educated local boys in the Kashmir Valley, many of them school toppers, taking up arms.
Wani was seen to be the man steering them. He and his accomplices would choose to use social media as weapon of war, releasing videos taunting security forces of them posing with their weapons.
None of them crossed over to Pakistan for training in terror camps unlike militants in the past. But where they were operationally weak, they were physically strong, commanding near cult following among radicalised young Kashmiris.
For the first time in years, local militants outnumber foreign terrorists in Kashmir and much of it is seen as Burhan Wani's influence.
There was a 10-lakh reward for information leading to his arrest.

Freedom fighters get killed in Kashmir by Hindu Indian forces. The same Hindu Indian forces that Afghans worship.
All around the internet, Kashmiri Muslims are mourning for the brave 22 year old freedom fighter, while Indian Hindus are rejoicing, as If they have achieved something big by killing a teenage resistance fighter. They are all over the internet writing anti-Islamic comments and humiliating the subjugated people of Kashmir.
He was fighting against Hindu occupation of his lands. Fighting against harassment, torture, rape, mass graves, and occupation; He was martyred. By the same Hindus that Afghans love to kiss the ass of.
Please give a prayer for the young brother that stood against Hindu oppression and aggression.

May the Afghans stop their friendship with the Hindus. Inshallah
