  • Lights out: Peshawar’s women remain sleepless, irritated

PESHAWAR:*Ramazan has nearly come to an end, but unscheduled power outages are still the order of the day. The lives of locals have been made miserable in the absence of electricity for several hours a day.

Those suffering the most during this power crisis are women who are sleep deprived and rather irritated.

“My kids start crying when there is no electricity in this hot weather,” says Shumaila, a housewife. “It is unjust that Pesco takes electricity from us despite the fact that we pay bills on time.”

The mother adds the whole day is spent either washing clothes, dishes, preparing food or ironing clothes and she tries to finish all chores before the inevitable power failure.

There are about 20 hours of load-shedding in different parts of Peshawar and this has compounded the miseries of locals.

Even the presence of electricity can prove to be a menace as fluctuation and tripping have damaged expensive home appliances such refrigerators and air conditioners.

“Fasting in the month of June is not easy [in any case], but I think Pesco has made it mandatory for there to be no electricity – especially at the time of iftari and sehri” said Mobeena, a resident of Gulbahar.

“We bought a new refrigerator last year after saving money, but that also stopped working due to tripping,” she claimed.

The massive load-shedding has also caused water shortages.

Now many women and children from different areas bring cans filled with water from far-flung areas.

Jamili Bibi, a resident of Waliabad, expressed her disappointment when asked about the possibility for no load-shedding.

“It has become our destiny now. Our so-called leaders have failed to provide electricity despite making promises,” she concluded.

20 hours of loadshedding is almost unbearable for thise who know how hot it gets in Peshawar especially in Ramadhan. The men can go swim in rivers etc, feel sorry for the women who have to work all day.

True, but not as hot as interior areas of Punjab/Sindh and areas of North India
, like yesterday in Sahiwal a town in Punjab, it was 51 Celsius

Karachi is cooler then places, because of ocean near by, but really really humid

Nukes are more important, who need electricity when you don't even exist.

And this is why your country is rife with corruption. Interests of the few supersede the needs of the many.

Also, as economist Kaushik Basu says: "For a nation to progress it is important for people to spend time on science, mathematics and literature instead of spending time showing that 5,000 years ago their ancestors did science, mathematics and literature."

Kid what do you know about Pakistan apart from some knowledge gained from online chattar. 10.000MW power plants are under construction since 2015, by early 2018 these should be up and running and load shedding will become thing of past.

On top of that Pakistan will continue to be nuclear power. Remember what Bhutto said, we will eat grass but build bomb. Defence and existence of Pakistan is more important then electricity. 50 years back majority of Pakistanis didn't even knew what electricity even was. They will live through this period of load shedding.

Of course no one in their sane mind will bomb nuclear power Pakistan. But Afghanistan has been bombed to stone age in last 4 decades, do we want same for Pakistan? Of course not hence Pakistan will continue to build more bombs.

Afghani terrorists don't threaten existence of Pakistan.

If Pakistan never had nukes it would have been finished along time ago. It's a successful deterrent. National security is key to any form of progression. Nukes are understandable. Pakistan has many enemies. Khostai is a non-Muslim and would grovel at the demise of any nation with a Muslim majority.

Thanks to Musharaf,Under his 9 years tenure no major project was launched and the demand was increasing.

Electricity crisis is directly due to Musharaf Period.

i don't understand if it's the same or if it has changed since 2009 but do the lights still go out every hour or two and then come back for an hour?? i could never understand why they do that instead of giving half of the city electricity for half the day and the other for half of the day. that way people could catch up on sleep and stuff rather than being miserable.

Exactly the same but the situation is even worse in KP now.

People prefer this hour hour pattern because the UPS recharge for one hour and give at least fan and lights support for the next hour.

In Peshawar as per my Brother, exactly 10 hour loadshedding per Day.

Porkistan has yet to be invaded by a country, or have to go through continuous war for 40 years, but it is still pretty much a ****hole. Porkistan hasn't come to terms with any of its neighbours, except China. That in itself isn't a recipe for success.

Lol, of course they don't pose a threat to Porkistan because they themselves have been trained and funded by ISI. However, as it turns out, they are now turning against you.

Nukes do act as a good deterrent, but a nuclear attack is unthinkable in this day and age. However, with the IQ of the average Pakistani, it wouldn't be surprised if some idiot in Pakistan decides to use a nuke. Porkistan poses a great threat to the region and the world in general, it has to be eliminated as soon as it can be done.
