What scares me is that the parents seem to be Hispanic and my image of them is much more traditional Catholic values for the family.

I said that was BACK THEN in those years. You must have been in NYC maybe or still up in Heaven, but what people don't realize talking about Taliban bombings - or many pseudo groups who are the ones who really carry out those bombings in Khyber Pukhtunkhwa one would guess - is that that entire region was full of bombings almost every day during the Soviet war time. They were orchestrated by Khad with KGB assistance to intimidate Pakistan. So the attacks were unrelenting.
Nobody bothered to write about this in newspapers. I did myself, but otherwise few paid attention. Suddenly NOW there's all the Western press about Pakistan falling apart.
Well, if it did not fall apart under the KGB pressure to make Pakistan kick out Afghan refugees, then the bombings now are probably not going to destabilize Pakistan. That's a lot of hype, I suspect.
But there WERE so many attacks, mostly in the Old City but all over the area.

NDS is the Afghan intelligence services. formerly known as KHAD.
