UN says thousands already starved to death in Syria

The United Nations' Human Rights Chief said on Monday that "thousands" of people trapped in besieged areas of Syria may have already starved to death.
Zeid Ra'ad al-Hussein made, according to Al Jazeera, the remark after the first successful "cessation of hostilities" in Syria's six-year-old war came to pass in the weekend. The UN and other aid agencies are preparing to truck in food and other humanitarian aid to besieged areas which were inaccessible before the ceasefire.
"The deliberate starvation of people is unequivocally forbidden as a weapon of warfare. By extension, so are sieges," he said. "Thousands of people may have starved to death."
The UN believes that at least 500,000 Syrians are living in areas under siege.
The UN Resident Coordinator in Damascus, Yacoub El Hillo, warned "that without a meaningful political process and a political solution, both cessation of hostilities and entry of humanitarian assistance will not be enough to end the crisis in Syria."
