Turkey’s totally failed Middle East policy

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is putting on a brave face and saying that Turkey has alternatives to Russia, both in terms of trade and energy supplies, not to mention the millions of Russian tourists who will most likely refuse to come to Turkey now.

“Who cares if they buy from us or not, other doors will open to us, as they already are,” Erdoğan said defiantly after Turkey downed the Russian jet and destroyed the delicately poised relationship between Ankara and Moscow.

Market analysts and energy experts, however, are not so sure that the confidence Erdoğan is trying to project is justified. Whether they are vegetable farmers or contractors, Turks who are engaged in some form of business with Russia, for their part, are in a state of near-panic as a result of the crisis in Turkish-Russian ties. One only has to read what they are saying to the Turkish press to see this.

Meanwhile the pro-government media is full of reports about how Ankara is successfully establishing alternative energy sources to Russia, especially from Azerbaijan and Qatar, but analysts say will these will take time to secure and will not meet Turkey’s requirements even when they have been secured.

Let us assume for a moment, however, that Erdoğan is right, and that Turkey will easily overcome the problems resulting from the crisis in ties with Russia. One has to question then why the government did not have the strategic foresight to establish these links in the past, rather than putting all its eggs in the Russian basket.

Despite the vast economic interests between the two countries, Ankara and Moscow have rarely been on the same page politically in terms of many international issues. They were always at odds over the Cyprus issue, for example, which is a national cause for Turkey. Recently the two countries have been in deep disagreement over sensitive issues like Crimea and Syria.

A sensible foreign policy would have been to reduce Turkey’s dependence on Russia, which supplies no less than 54 percent of its natural gas, and to diversify its export markets given that the political problems between the two countries had the potential to boil over.

Previous governments, including the Justice and Development Party (AKP) for quite some time, ensured that relations with Moscow were kept relatively well, regardless of political differences, because it was clear that things were never as simple as Erdoğan is trying to make them look now.

Blinded by their limited understanding of foreign policy and regional calculations grounded on their Islamist/Sunni outlook, Erdoğan and Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu walked into traps they set internationally, by quixotically chasing after pipe-dreams, not the least of which was the assumption that Turkey was a natural leader for the Middle East.

Today, though, Turkey has no ties with Israel, no ties to speak of with Egypt, has alienated Iran and - as the last verbal sparring between Ankara and Baghdad over Turkey’s deployment of troops north of Mosul shows - has strained ties with Iraq.

Until the AKP came to power Ankara also had a policy based on non-interference in the internal affairs of other countries, let alone working for regime change in other countries. Erdoğan and Davutoğlu pulled all that down, arguing that Ankara’s past foreign policy was based on a “servile” understanding of Turkey’s regional capacities.

They ended up “poking out an eye while trying to trim an eyelash,” as the Turkish saying goes. It soon became apparent that they never understood the basic dynamics of this part of the world and how the region views Turkey.

Having set out to reduce Turkey’s “servility,” they increased Ankara’s dependence on outside support for its security from regional threats. They also left Turkey hanging on the coattails of other powers in an effort to regain some of its lost regional influence.

All of this points to one thing: A totally failed Middle East policy.

President Erdoğan is putting on a brave face and saying that Turkey has alternatives to Russia, both in terms of trade and energy supplies, not to mention the millions of Russian tourists who will most likely refuse to come to Turkey now

    Summary:

From now one those who can't be bother to read articles I post will get a short summary, if they disagree with my summary they are free to read the whole article. Basically the writer says Erdogan's failed with his middle east policy, Turkey's Arab and Middle eastern neighbours all hate her (Egypt, Iraq, Syria, Iran etc) and that the Russian sanctions on Turkey will have a severe impact no matter what a brave face or spin Erdogan puts on it.

    lol

    Putin outwits Erdogan!

Russia warns Turkey over Aegean warship incident

      Reuters By Katya Golubkova

      …

      By Katya Golubkova

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia on Sunday warned Turkey to stop staging what it called provocations against its forces in or near Syria after one of its warships fired warning shots at a Turkish vessel in the Aegean to avoid a collision.

The Russian Defence Ministry said one of its warships, the destroyer Smetlivy, had been forced to fire the warning shots on Sunday morning and that it had summoned the Turkish military attache over the incident.

"The Turkish military diplomat was given a tough explanation about the potentially disastrous consequences from Ankara's reckless actions towards Russia's military contingent fighting against international terrorism in Syria," the Defence Ministry said in a statement.

"In particular, our deep concerns about more Turkish provocations towards the Russian destroyer Smetlivy were conveyed."

Earlier on Sunday, the ministry said that the Turkish fishing vessel failed to respond to Smetlivy's warnings and changed course sharply only after shots were fired before passing within just over 500 meters of the warship.

"Only by luck was tragedy avoided," the ministry said.

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu, who was in Rome for talks on Libya, said Ankara was investigating the matter and would make a statement once it had more information.

He also reiterated Turkey's position that it wanted to resolve its difficulties with Russia. "We want to solve the tension with dialogue," he said, in comments broadcast by TRT Turk.

The incident is likely to heighten tensions between the two nations who are seriously at odds over Syria and the Turkish shooting down of a Russian military jet last month.

Russian President Vladimir Putin, who called the downing of the plane a "stab in the back", has since imposed economic sanctions on Turkey as a retaliatory measure.

Earlier this month, Turkey complained to Russia over an incident in which a Russian sailor was pictured brandishing a rocket launcher on the deck of a naval ship passing through Istanbul.

      LOL!

      ROFL!

      Russia is humiliating the Turks!

In their own "backyard" the Russians are now bossing the Turks around and giving them orders and intimidating the Turks.

It seems what happened was that a fishing boat came near a Russian military vessel which then fire shots in to the sea as a warning.

Rapidly the Turkish military attache in Moscow was warned.

For those who know about geo-politics, this is a glorious mixture of comedy, artistry and sheer genius from the Russians.

      lol

For decades the Turks have been bossing and bullying others in the region be it little Greece to Iraq and Syria not to mention the 3,000 Kurdish villages they destroyed and 2-3 million Kurds they made refugees.

Now Russia and Putin are humiliating these egocentric and big-headed Turks, who believe they are superior to others partly because of being "sons of the Ottomans" thus entitling them to bullying others.

      lol

Russia is breathing down the Turks necks, making them feel very edgy and uneasy. Not only is Russia wiping out the Turkmen rebels in the Syrian side of the Syria-Turkish border. Not only is Russia wiping out the oil fleet of Turkey's proxy ISIS. Now Russia is humiliating Turkey in the Aegean and making it feel uncomfortable.

Russia is also telling Turkey "hey you can bully little Greece, we are a nuclear giant, don't F*** with us".

The Russians are breathing down the Turks neck and psyching them out.

      - In the Bosphorus straits there was a Russian soldier in a Russian naval ship filmed with a rocket in an aggressive pose, a warning to Turks in their own waters!

      - In Syria their proxies are being eliminated and expelled with Syria now a NO-GO zone for the Turks.

      - In Iraq the Turks sent some soldiers to Mosul and now the Iranians and Russians incited the Iraqis against them and took this to the frigging UN! LOL

Now a cleric with the loyalty of millions of Iraqi Shias has essentially called for the removal of the Turks and hundreds of thousands of Iraqi Shia militia-men may expel the Turks.

      - Now in the Aegean, where for decades Turkey bullied the Greeks and intimidated them Russia has slapped them with warning shots against a Turkish fishing boat.

So in their north, their south and their west the Turks are feeling the Russian bear breathing down on them.

Even in their east as the Russians have started putting more troops in to Armenia!

This is what the Erdogan mouthpiece, Sabah (pro-AKP paper) said about Russia:

        The Russians are:

        - encircling the Turks, north, south, east and today west!

        - intimidating the Turks, also the cruise missiles and submarine-launched missiles the Russians have used in Syria can hit Turkey

Putin has said any one threatening Russian forces in Syria will be destroyed, a warning to NATO and the Turks that Russian soldiers do not need special presidential authorization to do so.

Putin has also hinted at using nukes in Syria, he referred to ISIS but this was also a warning to their patron, Turkey.

Here is the Russian soldier with a missile in the waters of Istanbul:

        BBC:

Turkey fury as Russian seen brandishing missile launcher

        6 December 2015

Turkey has expressed outrage at images showing a Russian serviceman apparently holding a missile launcher as his ship passed through Turkish waters.

Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu called the incident a "provocation".
The images, published in Turkish media, show the Russian resting the launcher on his shoulder while on deck.
Turkey says images showing a Russian soldier holding a missile launcher are a "provocation", with the two sides at odds over the downing of a Russian jet.

The Turks can bully Greece, Bulgaria, Syria, Iraq but Iran is a regional superpower and Russia is a nuclear giant and global military superpower.

The Turks and Erdogan are being humiliated!

        haha.

Turkey 'to withdraw more troops from Iraq'

Protesters in Basra, Iraq, burn Turkish flag during demonstration calling for withdrawal of Turkish troops from northern Iraq. 18 Dec 2015

Tensions between Iraq and Turkey have risen over the deployment

Turkey says it will pull more of its troops out of northern Iraq, following a partial withdrawal earlier this week.
The foreign ministry said it acknowledged a "miscommunication" with Iraq over the deployment of its forces.
It comes a day after US President Barack Obama urged Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to "de-escalate tensions" with Baghdad.
Turkey sent at least 150 troops into northern Iraq earlier this month saying they were to protect military trainers.
Turkey has deployed troops at the Bashiqa camp near Mosul - a city controlled by Islamic State (IS) - since 2014 to train Iraqi Kurdish forces.
But the Iraqi government said the latest move had been carried out without consultation and violated national sovereignty and international law.
"Turkey... acknowledges the miscommunication with the government of Iraq over the deployments of Turkish protection forces," the Turkish foreign ministry said in the statement.
"Turkey, in recognition of the Iraqi concerns and in accordance with the requirements of the fight against Daesh [IS], is continuing to move military forces from Nineveh province that were the source of miscommunication."
The statement did not say how many troops would be moved or where they would go to.
On Monday, Turkey's state-run news agency quoted military officials as saying a 10 or 12-vehicle convoy had left Bashiqa camp and was moving north.
It came days after Turkish Prime Minister Ahmed Davutoglu's office said it had decided to reorganise its military personnel at Bashiqa following talks with Iraqi officials.
The Turkish government enjoys close relations with the semi-autonomous Kurdistan Region in Iraq.
But it considers the Syrian Kurdish Democratic Union Party (PYD) - whose Popular Protection Units (YPG) militia is a key ally of the US-led coalition against IS - as an enemy because it is an offshoot of the banned Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK).

Turkey says it will move more of its troops out of northern Iraq, acknowledging a "miscommunication" with the Baghdad government.

          The Humiliation Continues!

          1. Turks shoot down a Russian plane.

Russia sends 7,000 Russian soldiers to the border with Turkey in Armenia.

Russia fires a shot near a Turkish fishing boat and calls in the Turkish defence attache in Moscow to warn (threaten) him. If Russia blocks Turkish shipping in the Aegean then Turkey is in big trouble.

Russia planning to expel 90,000 Turks from Russia.

Russia stops multi-billion dollar Russian tourism with Turkey.

Russia makes Turkey too scared to send any Turkish planes inside Syrian territory.

Russian leader Putin threatens, warns Turkey by saying that if he thinks Russian retaliation will just be sanctions on vegetables he is mistaken (hinting at some form of Russian retaliation).

Russian leader Putin insults Erdogan openly saying he "licks" the US.

Russia kills Turkish citizens with impunity in Syria i.e. Turkish lorry drivers.

Russia destroys hundreds of Turkish-backed ISIS oil trucks.

Russia wipes out Turkish-backed "Turkmen" militants in Syria, bombing them to smithereens.

Russia threatens gas supply to Turkey, Turks quickly run to Israel to make up with them and get gas, thus undermining their carefully cultivated (and false) image in the Arab and Muslim world as "enemies of Israel" and "defenders of the Palestinians".

          2. Turkey sends in a major military force in to northern Iraq.

          - Russia raises this in the UN.

          - Russia and Iran accused by Erdogan himself of being behind the Iraqi governments calls for Turkey to withdraw this military force from Iraqi soil.

          - Turkey starts withdrawing, just days after Erdogan said it was impossible they would do so.

The Neo-Ottoman/AKP wet dream of realizing the "Misak i milli" (national covenant i.e. greater Turkey) is destroyed by Russia in Syria and now in Iraq.

The "Misak i Milli" borders of Turkey as dreamt of by AKP Neo-Ottomans and even some Kemalists whereby the ex-Ottoman regions of northern Iraq and northern Syria become part of Turkey.

The Velike Srbije (Greater Serbia) dreams of Serb nationalists which were destroyed in 1995 with the Croatian reconquest of eastern Croatia's Krajina region.

The "Eretz Israel" (Greater Israel dream of ultra-nationalist Zionists of an Israel from "the Nile to the Euphrates".

The "third Reich" (Greater Germany) dream of the Nazis.

The Nazis, Zionists, Chetniks (Serb fascists) and Neo-Ottomans have all failed in their dreams of territorial enlargement and subjugation of foreign peoples.

Iraqis burn Turkish flag as Neo-Ottomanism fails in Iraq.

Russians burn Turkish flag after shooting down of Russian plane.

          ARMENIA:

          Armenians burn Turkish flag.

          Greeks.

          Egypt.

            KURDS CROSS THE EUPHRATES!

YPG Kurdish militia men have captured the Tishrin Dam!

They are going west of the Euphrates, a region declared as a red line by NATO's 2nd largest military power, Turkey!

            December 24th:

            Today:

Comment: There were three Kurdish zones in the north of Syria. They were separated between Jarabulus and

Kurdish areas in the north coloured in lime.

The area in between them was controlled by Salafists, i.e. ISIS.

Erdogan had said that he would not accept the Kurds crossing the west of the Euphrates and expelling the Salafists (Wahabis) of ISIS.

He was in charge of the biggest army in Europe, 3rd biggest military in the north Atlantic after the US and Russia.

            What happened?

            The Kurds went west.

            Haha!

Erdogan has been humiliated once again.

He and his fascist Turkish military cannot do anything since Russia has made Syria a NO-GO zone for the Turks.

The YPG / SDF forces that have captured Tishreen consist of both Arabs and Kurds, and the SDF itself consists of Kurds, Arabs, Turkmen, Assyrian Christians etc.

            SDF = Syrian Democratic Forces

            "Quwwat Sooriya ad-Dimuqratiya" in Arabic.

            HSD in Kurdish.

The Kurds may go further west and connect all three Kurdish zones in Syria making virtually all of Turkey's border with Syria one which borders Syrian Kurdistan (Rojava).

Syrian Kurdistan is becoming more and more of a reality just like Iraqi Kurdistan. Turkish Kurdistan is in a state of severe unrest and some speculate its only a matter of time before Turkish Kurds get autonomy which may lead to independence.

            Putin does it again!

SDF forces backed by Putin, have expelled Salafists from the Tishreen dam region.

              Update:

              - The Erdogan regime shot down a Russian fighter plane which Russia said was in Syrian airspace but Turkey claimed was in Turkish air space for around less than 60 seconds (though Turkey violates Greek airspace on an almost daily basis).

              1. Russia reacted by imposing sanctions on Turkey which has damaged the Turkish economy leading to billions of dollars being lost and job losses.

              2. Russia wiped out Turkmen rebels in the north-west of Syria in Latakia.

              3. Russia wiped out the ISIS oil fleet to Turkey in a business operated by the Erdogan family.

Recently Erdogan, feeling the heat, has started grovelling and apologizing to Russia trying to suck up to the powerful nuclear giant.

MOSCOW — Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan apologized Monday for the downing of a Russian warplane in November and called for Russia and Turkey to mend a bilateral relationship that has become openly hostile over the incident....

On Monday, Erdogan wrote to Putin that he “would like to inform the family of the deceased Russian pilot that I share their pain and to offer my condolences to them. May they excuse us.”..

The personal apology from one of the region’s most autocratic politicians came on a day of diplomacy that dealt with some of the international tension he has generated in recent years. Turkey on Monday also normalized relations with Israel, ending a six-year rift over the killing by Israeli commandos of Turkish activists aboard an aid ship bound for the Gaza Strip.

Soner Cagaptay, director of the Turkish Research Program at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, said Russia had ratcheted up pressure on Turkey over the incident.

“Russia has been very aggressive against Turkey, militarily and in intelligence and cyber realms since the 2015 November plane incident,” he said. “This scares Erdogan tremendously. If the joke in Turkey was that Erdogan, the sultan, would never apologize, the answer would be ‘yes, but except to the tsar.’ ”
Turkish president apologizes for downing of Russian warplane last year - The Washington Post

Russia has now sent its biggest naval ship, an aircraft carrier, with under 100 aircraft to end ISIS and other Salafi/Wahabi militants labelled "moderate rebels" by the western corporate media which is blindly and uncritically believed by many in the west, brainwashed by western propaganda from CNN, BBC, Al-Jazeera etc.

Russian soldier. Russia has sent an aircraft carrier with a very big air force contingent to smash ISIS and other western-backed Salafi/Wahabi "moderate rebels" in Syria.

Erdogan thinks of dumping the dollar for trade with Russia

But perhaps the most notable development was reported today by Turkey's Gunes newspaper, which said that as part of the discussion between Putin and Erdogan on Tuesday, the Turkish president suggested to abandon the US dollar in bilateral trade between Turkey and Russia, and instead to transact directly in lira and rubles. This would "benefit both Russia and Turkey", Erdogan allegedly said in his August 9 meeting in St Petersburg, adding that this would relieve the lira from the USD's upward pressure. The reason Erdogan is concerned about exchange rates is because recently Turkish inflation soared by nearly 8% Y/Y, and the recent devaluation of the TRY against the USD has only poured more oil on the fire.
Erdogan Threatens To Abandon US Dollar In Trade With Russia | Zero Hedge

Some say that the reason the US invaded Saddam's Iraq in 2003 was he was planning to sell oil in Euros and not dollars, and that the reason why the Americans overthrew Gaddafi in 2003 was also to do with his currency plans.

US global power rests on the US petro-dollar, i.e. everyone buying oil in dollars and everyone doing trade with each other in dollars.

Russia and China are working against this and now Turkey might be joining the club.

The Americans have already tried overthrowing Erdogan in the July 15 Gulenist coup but failed. Erdogan has the Americans by the balls as he is around 90 American nuclear missiles in Turkish soil in a base, Incirlik, he besieged a week or two ago with 7,000 Turkish policemen surrounding the base with it's 1,500 American soldiers.

Erdogan, saved by Putin apparently due to alleged FSB (Russian intelligence service) disclosure of the planned coup, is now angry with the Americans and working with Putin.

Putin obviously doesn't like Erdogan, but he has humiliated him....but also saved his life. Erdogan is now furious with the Americans who may have wanted to kill him in the July 15th coup.
