    Putin humiliates regional bully Turkey

Last week a Russian fighter jet, part of a force invited by the UN recognized government of Syria to fight insurgents, was shot down by Turkey.

    - Turkey claims that it was shot down after it was in Turkish airspace for around 30 seconds or less.

    - Russia claims that the plane was in Syria and in fact there are some reports that the Turkish plane went inside Syria to deliberately shoot the plane down.

Even if we believe in the Turkish claim, then this merely exposes Turkey's hypocrisy as it is the well-known regional bully.

    1. Turkish bullying of Greece:

Turkey violates Greek airspace over 2,000 times last year.

Data recorded by the Greek military has shown that Turkish aircraft violated its claimed airspace 2,244 times in 2014. By October of this year, Turkish aircraft had made 1,443 intrusions with the financially-weakened Greek military stuggling to respond.

Turkey has also openly declared for years that it will start a war against Greece if Greece follows the internationally recognized norm of having 12 nautical miles off its coast as its maritime water.

The routine daily violations of Greek airspace are meant to be Turkish harassment and intimidation of Greece.

    2. Turkish bullying of Iraq and Syria.

    - Turkey routinely sends planes and bombs parts of Iraq in its war with PKK fighters.

    - Turkey has been sponsoring the ISIS terrorist organization to destabilize Syria.

Turkey's connections to ISIS, Business Insider.

This has been mentioned in the Turkish media too with a senior Turkish journalist being arrested recently by the Erdogan regime for exposing Turkey's sponsorship of ISIS.

Can Dundar, arrested by the Erdogan regime this week for exposing Turkish arms supplies to ISIS.

Turkish journalists arrested for exposing Turkey's arms supplies to Wahabi militants in Syria, The Guardian.

    - Turkey has basically given itself authority over parts of Syrian territory in violation of all UN rules.

    - Turkey has sent government officials to Iraq without the permission of the Iraqi government.

    - Turkey also has a very aggressive attitude towards Iraq and Syria over the Tigris and Euphrates rivers with massive construction of dams restricting water supply to the heavily desert countries of Iraq and Syria.

It was this water shortage which was one of the main reasons there were protests in 2011 in Syria which led to the current civil war.

So in short Turkey was bullying its neighbours such as Greece, Iraq, Syria, blockading Armenia, causing problems for Bulgaria with its Turkish minority (10-15%, the ethnic Turkish party there is often the kingmaker in coalition governments).

The Turks were harassing Muslim countries with interference in their affairs, insults and support of terrorists in Egypt, Bangladesh, Tunisia and elsewhere.

Erdogan's Turkey even went as wild enough to call for membership of the South-east Asian organization, "ASEAN" (Association of South East Asian Nations").

However Turkey went too far when it tried to take on the Russian bear.

    - Turkey had its military planes shot down by the Syrians a few years back and was unable to retaliate.

    - Russia started bombing Wahabist militants in Syria a month or two ago and recently started bombing ISIS oil refineries and ISIS oil lorries which were involved in the Turkey-ISIS oil trade. This hurt Erdogan a lot as his notorious son, Bilal, was involved in this trade and making millions.

    - Russia also started bombing Turkmen militants in the Jabal Akrad region (Mountain of Kurds, which the Turkish propaganda machine calls the "Jabal Turkman).

This was too much for Erdogan and a few days before the Russian plane was shot down by the Turks, his regime had summoned the Russian ambassador in Turkey to protest at what Russia was doing.

Turkey then shot the plane down...

    - Russia bombed 12 Turkish-Syrian border crossing points
    - Russia bombed Turkish lorries carrying in supplies to rebels in Syria, one report said 70 people were killed in one Russian attack. If this is true i.e :

Turkey killed 1 Russian, Russian killed 70 people in response.

    A ratio of 1:70

Turkey has been shown as a paper tiger.

    - It has been unable to stop the Russian destruction of Turkish border crossings.

    - It has been unable to stop the Russian bombing of its allies, ISIS and their oil supplies.

    - It has been unable to stop the Russian destruction of Turkmen militants.

    - It has been unable to stop Russia from sending the S-400 air defence system in to Syria to prevent Turkish planes in.

    - It has ordered Turkish planes to stay grounded in the region.

The Turkish Air Force is no longer supporting the air war on ISIS.
According to Turkey’s Hurriyet newspaper, the Turkish Air Force has suspended the missions over Syria of its aircraft supporting the international air campaign against ISIS.

    Comment from a poster there:

    - So Turkey kills 1, the Russians kill 70 (unconfirmed).

    - Turkey takes down a Russian plane, Russia seals off the whole of Syrian airspace to Turkey leaving the Turks in fear and telling their pilots not to fly their planes.

    - Turkey watches with inaction as Russia bombs ethnic Turks/Turkmens next door to Turkey's very own doorstep as the biggest army in Europe (Turkey) can do nothing.

Erdogan is now dropping his hard man, tough, macho image and softening his rhetoric.

Turkey's Erdogan sees Paris climate summit as chance to mend ties with Russia

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said on Saturday the climate change summit in Paris next week could be a chance to repair relations with Moscow after Turkey shot down a Russian jet near the Syrian border on Tuesday.

    Read more at Reutershttp://www.reuters.com/article/2015/11/28/us-mideast-crisis-turkey-russia-idUSKBN0TH0FH20151128#lOgPEYxvTe1AecFf.99

So Russia destroys Turkish border posts, kills as many as possibly up to 70 Turks, destroys Turkish lorries and Erdogan wants to go to Paris to make up with Putin.

In other words, he's scared and wants to back off.

    International reaction.

Many people around the world will rejoice that Putin has slapped Erdogan hard and caused him to start begging to "make up".

    - Greece: A major victim of Turkish aggression and intimidation, Greeks will naturally be happy that Turkey has been shown its limits.

    - China: Wary of Turkish nationalism and radicalism and last week a multi-billion dollar defence deal was cancelled between the two countries.

    - Thailand: Its embassy was attacked by Turks in Turkey and it was the victim of a terrorist attack in Bangok by pan-Turkic terrorists a few months back.

    - Egypt: The current government has faced problems due to the hostile rhetoric and behaviour of the Erdogan regime and has carried out sanctions against Turkey.

    - Libya: Not happy with Turkey at all and its support for Islamic extremists in the country.

    - UAE: Not happy with Turkey including supporting forces opposed to the UAE-backed government in Libya.

    - Bangladesh: Many Bangladeshis are not happy with Turkeys support for war criminals and perpetrators of genocide in Bangladesh and its fanatical blind support for Pakistan.

    - Tunisia: Has called the Turkish ambassador in Tunisa in the past to protest against Turkish interference in the country. The Tunisian people have successfully removed the local "Muslim" Brotherhood outfit in Tunisia, known as An-Nahda.

    - Iraq: Not happy with Turkey including restriction of water supplies, bombing of Iraqi territory, invasion of parts of Iraq etc.

Erdogan has been humiliated and Turkey has been shown as a paper tiger. The problem for Erdogan is that if he escalates this behaviour even more, what can he do if Russia actually starts shooting down Turkish planes or sites inside Turkey?

When Russia destroyed Turkish border posts it attacked Turkey, it destroyed sites which were inside Turkey and bordering Syria.

Turkey was attacked, Erdogan did nothing.

Turkish lorries belong to Turkish citizens were bombed, Erdogan did nothing.

Turkey bombed by Syria with perhaps as many as 70 Turks killed, Erdogan was powerless to do anything.

Putin in an occassion when he was taunting Erdogan's master, Obama.

This is the greatest humiliation for ethnic Turks in the region since 0.6 million Turks (Azeris) were made refugee by Russian-backed Armenians with small Armenia defeating much larger Azerbaijan.

    Erdogan has been humiliated

Turkey's Erdogan Expresses Regret Over Russian Plane Downing

"We are truly saddened by this incident."

    Posted: 11/28/2015 09:54 AM EST

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) -- Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Saturday voiced regret over Turkey's downing of a Russian warplane, saying his country was "truly saddened" by the incident and wished it hadn't occurred.

It was the first expression of regret by the strongman leader since Tuesday's incident in which Turkish F-16 jets shot down the Russian jet on grounds that it had violated Turkey's airspace despite repeated warnings to change course. It was the first time in half a century that a NATO member shot down a Russian plane and drew a harsh response from Moscow.

"We are truly saddened by this incident," Erdogan said. "We wish it hadn't happened as such, but unfortunately such a thing has happened. I hope that something like this doesn't occur again."

Addressing supporters in the western city of Balikesir, Erdogan said neither country should allow the incident to escalate and take a destructive form that would lead to "saddening consequences."

He renewed a call for a meeting with President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of a climate conference in Paris next week, saying it would be an opportunity to overcome tensions.

Turkish F-16 jets shot down the Russian jet on Tuesday.

Erdogan's friendly overture however, came after he again vigorously defended Turkey's action and criticized Russia for its operations in Syria.

"If we allow our sovereign rights to be violated ... then the territory would no longer be our territory," Erdogan said.

Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu also said he hoped a meeting between Erdogan and Putin would take place in Paris.

"In such situations it is important to keep the channels of communication open," he said.

Putin has denounced the Turkish action as a "treacherous stab in the back," and has insisted that the plane was downed over Syrian territory in violation of international law. He has also refused to take telephone calls from Erdogan. Putin's foreign affairs adviser, Yuri Ushakov, said Friday that the Kremlin had received Erdogan's request for a meeting, but wouldn't say whether such a meeting is possible.

Asked why Putin hasn't picked up the phone to respond to Erdogan's two phone calls, he said that "we have seen that the Turkish side hasn't been ready to offer an elementary apology over the plane incident."

After the incident, Russia deployed long-range S-400 air defense missile systems to a Russian air base in Syria just 50 kilometers (30 miles) south of the border with Turkey to help protect Russian warplanes, and the Russian military warned it would shoot down any aerial target that would pose a potential threat to its planes.

Russia has since also restricted tourist travel to Turkey, left Turkish trucks stranded at the border, confiscated large quantities of Turkish food imports and started preparing a raft of broader economic sanctions.

On Saturday Turkey issued a travel warning urging its nationals to delay non-urgent and unnecessary travel to Russia, saying Turkish travelers were facing "problems" in the country. It said Turks should delay travel plans until "the situation becomes clear."

Erdogan: "Please Putin, why aren't you answering my calls? Am I not important enough to be spoken to? Can I meet you in Paris to make up, please Putin!

as a reader, whenever you come across a political journal or article that has used altered/photoshopped pictures in order to capture your attention, know that what you are facing is the lowest and most dishonest form of journalism.
someone is trying to inject an idea in to your mind and they are not even straight up about it.

as for the title of this thread. putin is a bully himself. when putin gives us weapons and military supplies, it's not because he is interested in a brighter future for us. it's to ensure that when he goes off to bite someone, he has someone to depend on. if putin wanted to help us, he would invest in our infrastructure or educational systems. or heck, train our soldiers for us.

we are like those druggies that are given free drugs for two days in order for a dealer to instill dependency on a future customer/victim.

This is typical of Turks. When something happens like cowards they start targeting innocent civilians.

          - During a recent crisis in China with Uighurs they ended up beating Korean, Japanese tourists who they thought were "Chinese".

          - They destroyed a "Chinese" restaurant owned by a Turk and employing Uighurs.

          - In the past several years they have attacked the Thai, Dutch and Bangladeshi embassies, acting like barbarians.

The one country on earth they worship is Pakistan as their education system, media and society teaches them to love Pakistan from a young age, and to hate Arabs as "hainleri" (traitors).

Putin needs to show these fascists that there is a red line to their bullying and aggression.

What those Turkish nationalists did in Australia was an act of sacrilege against Islam and karmically and Islamically (la'na = curse in Arabic) there may be severe consequences for them.

          - Erdogan is begging for reconciliation with Putin. Putin should refuse and also insist that Turkey de-radicalize its extremely aggressive and militantly nationalist education system and media, as Turkey is a regional threat to its neighbours, Muslim and Christian and through its support for ISIS a supporter of global terrorism and a threat to global peace and security.

            YPG advances near Turkey’s border
            By Rudaw yesterday at 11:30

A Peoples Protection Units (YPG) fighter in Rojava.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Turkey’s semi-official Anadolu news agency reported that the People's Protection Units (YPG) were backed by Russian aircraft Saturday in an advance into the Azaz region of Syria near the Turkish border.

Russian warplanes have reportedly facilitated the advance of YPG fighters by carrying out three airstrikes against the road linking the district with the Bab al Salameh border checkpoint.

Anadolu also reported that last week Russian aircraft bombed opposition forces in eastern Syria’s Deir Cemal and Meryemeyn in an effort to open corridors for the YPG and Syrian Democratic Forces.

Turkey’s National Security Council in October denounced a new self-proclaimed Kurdish enclave in Syria - Tal Abyad, or Gire Spi - and called on the international community to condemn the YPG as terrorists. Turkey has called the region of Tal Abyad “a campaign to change the demographic make-up of northern Syria."

Turkey’s council assembled after representatives of ethnic communities in the now Kurdish-controlled city of Tal Abyad met Wednesday to declare the region autonomous.

Control of the region is significant for the YPG because it links together many predominantly Kurdish villages in northern Syrian.

Turkey has warned the United States and Russia it will not tolerate any Kurdish region to be held by the PKK, which is deemed a terrorist group by NATO.

"This is clear cut for us and there is no joking about it," a Turkish official told Reuters in October.

Turkey fears advances by Kurdish forces on the Syrian side of its 900 km (560-mile) border will fuel separatist ambitions among Kurds in its own southeastern territories. But Washington has supported YPG fighters as an effective force in combating Islamic State, Reuters added.

Kurdish forces, backed by Russia, are making advances in the north to connect all of Syrian Kurdistan, Rojava, together.

Turkey opposes this and has threatened Syria Kurds in the past.

Now with a Russian no-fly zone over Syria, in which Turkish planes will be shot down, it will be interesting to see what happens.

Russia's S-400 missile system put in after Turkey shot their plane down no makes Syrian airspace closed of to Turkish and American planes.

YPG (Kurds) capture Turkish-backed ISIS fighters.

Iran's general Qasim Soleimani in the front lines around Aleppo where a joint Russian-Syrian-Iranian-Lebanese force are fighting Turkish backed Wahabists.

Chechen president Kadyrov, has released a stinging attack on Turkey and Wahabis in a message on social media. Kadyrov wants to go to Syria to fight Turkish-backed Wahabi militants.

Turkey and Saudi Arabia supporting ISIS in Syria.

An ex-ISIS fighter on a liveleaks video confessed to extensive support from Turkey and Syria.

ISIS, some of the ISIS fighters above are clearly Saudi/Gulf Arab as evident in their features, their somewhat homosexual manner may be indicative of the rampant homosexuality in Saudi Arabia.

            Turkish-backed ISIS Wahabis.

Your supporting Russians like they are fond of you or something, I'm actually surprised the audacity of your Russian favouritism given the Russian invasion of Afghanistan which butchered many of our people. That was one generation ago, not that easy to forget. To a Russian your nothing but a Indian fan boy (I have met Russians they don't really diffrinciate about Bengalis Indians or pakis). Also the attricities they have done against Muslims of the region, how they treat people in Dagestan or Chechnya.

What a lot of people don't understand is you can never defeat Isis by bombing the country more and devestating it. It's an impossible task which has been proven to be a waste. Essentially the Isis people are a direct result of war, anarchy and murder. Unless you kill every single person in Syria and Iraq then you can never defeat extremism or have a rest because new Isis members are made everyday as a result of the living conditions MADE BY BOMBING. Ok Russia will kill all the Isis members, and then what? Leave? They can't leave because the country in the post-Russian bombing state is a much more fertile breeding ground for extremists..most probably the excuse will be to stay and make bases 'for the sake of the Syrian people and safety of the world' sounds just like what America did to Afghanistan and we all know it's much more than that. To bomb Syria after all the other countries have is exposing the ridiculous mindset of these politicians driven by the lust for war. Take a look at Britain, few months ago prime minister wanted to bomb asaads forces, public didn't support, now he want to bomb asaads opposition..more like looking for any reason to take a peice of the pie.

Besides, if I was living next door to someone that was getting his house smashed in by different people everyday I would be edgy as f*** I'd have my finger on the trigger waiting for them to test me aswel, any sign of spillage will have a consequence, regardless of their size or numbers I'll have to do what i have to do.

If turkey is uniting with Indonesia then good, about time Muslim economical countries started some sort of Union.

Manzareh thanks for your post. I welcome people politely disagreeing with me, challenging me or even exposing me as wrong.

This is a forum, no on here has a monopoly on truth and the "Bengal_Tiger narrative/analysis" is just one that can be valued, rejected or a bit of both.

I will try to respond to your points and not get too "technical".

                  1. The USSR invaded Afghanistan was a brutal atheist dictatorship which committed all sorts of crimes including mass deportation, mass killing. It was a horrific state.

In another thread about China and Hungary, I went slightly off-topic and praised the Hungarian resistance to the communist USSR, so I'm not some sort of blind Russian fanboy.

The new modern Russian federation is a somewhat different entity which allows freedom of religion.

It's like China. China is pro-Pakistan and supported Pakistan in 1971 but I am looking at the current China and its role in containing US global aggression.

                  2. Many people in the world don't differentiate between people from a different region e.g. "Africans are all the same, who cares if you're Ghanaian, Nigerian, you're all the same".

To be honest I could care less what the average Russian thinks of me, it's not like I will live there. Russians have their fair share of racists and thugs, but I am viewing things from a political viewpoint, i.e. Russia+China v the far worse USA.

                  3. Yes, white Slavic Russians do not like people from the Caucasus including the Christian Georgians and view them as inferior, a type of "negro".

What a lot of people don't understand is you can never defeat Isis by bombing the country more and devestating it. It's an impossible task which has been proven to be a waste. ISIS are evil and don't get me wrong, Bashar al-Assad is an evil man too and done some horrific crimes including savage torture of civilian women and children in his torture camps.

It's a question of two evils, the relative stability of the Baathist state or the Libya type chaos of ISIS, An-Nusra and others.

The fact is, ISIS can actually be defeated, it's not too hard.

Every army needs guns and bullets. If they don't have guns and bullets and supplies they can't fight. The Russians are sealing Turkish supplies to ISIS and the other so-called "moderate rebels" e.g. Wahabis like An-Nusra.

It's like me saying "America can never take Kabul and put a government to rule it, Pashtuns are a mighty warrior race who believe in martyrdom plus NANG, BADAL and are full of "martial spirit", Pashtuns from Afghanistan, FATA, Pakhtunkhwa, Quetta, Karachi will all join their blood brothers in Kabul".

The fact is America has established a government there (like it did in Japan and Germany after WW2) and despite the urgency it's this government which rules Kabul and Afghanistan. Russia with the backing of millions of Syrians (I'd say most Syrians, who are Sunnis in their ideal world want Assad out and I lived in the country so I can say this) including Alawis, Christians, Druze, some Sunnis etc, can do the same in Syria.

Post-WW2 Germany where the Americans set up a successful west Germany.

I could go on and give countless more examples, analogies, details but prefer to as I do know some find my posts too long, overly detailed, boring etc.

If turkey is uniting with Indonesia then good, about time Muslim economical countries started some sort of Union.
It wasn't about uniting with Indonesia but about joining ASEAN which is majority non-Muslim e.g. Thailand, Vietnam, Philippines, Cambodia etc.

It's just an example of how delusional Erdogan is that he wants his majority-Muslim European/Middle eastern nation to join a South-east Asian union with Buddhists, Christians and some Muslims.

                  Buddhists in ASEAN member Thailand.

To summarize, I don't have a romantic view of Russians, freely accept many are racists but Putin is perhaps the one thing standing between us and continued US global terrorism where they can murder millions in Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya etc.

If Putin wins in Syria, which he is heading to, then America has been shown its limits and cannot go around invading, bombing, looting, raping countries willy nilly as it pleases murdering millions.

                    1. The ISIS fighters above are Wahabis, followers of the same Wahabi ideology as Shamlawar Khurasani (some of whose friends have left the Netherlands to fight for ISIS).

                    2. Wahabis believe any drawing of a human being or animal (if it includes the face and especially the eyes) is forbidden according to non-Quranic/extra-Quranic texts (statements attributed to holy prophet Muhammad صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم)

So this Wahabi/ISIS "selfie" would be "haram" (forbidden/illegal) according to many if not most Wahabi scholars, this would include all the Wahabi selfies with beheaded people.

So even if we go by their own corrupted ideology these Wahabis are not following Wahabism or "Islam" (in their view) properly.

Question: What is the ruling on taking photographs, when they are for necessity and when they are for adornment?

Answer: Pictures of living (humans and animals) are unlawful except for necessity. Examples of necessity include identity photos, passport photos, or photos of criminals for the purpose of identification and then arrest when they commit a crime or attempt to flee.
Question: What is the ruling concerning hanging a picture on the wall? What is the ruling concerning owning pictures of people?

Answer: It is not allowed to hang a picture or keep a picture of any being that possesses a soul. It is obligatory to destroy such pictures.

The link was from "Salaficentre", "Salafi" being the word which Wahabis (followers of desert preacher, Abdul Wahab) like to go by.

Shia Islam does not prohibit drawing human/animal form. Many less orthodox Sunni Muslims ignore this rule of strict legalistic orthodox Sunnism.

                      Update

                      - The Russian humiliation of thug Erdogan continues with Putin snubbing in Paris, refusing to meet the war criminal.

                      - Putin has issued another warning/threat to Erdogan that Russia's anger with Erdogan and his regime will not be limited to sanctions (an implicit hint at some form of military or violent action).

                      Link: The Guardian.

Erdogan. The war criminal was involved in a court case where he was compared to "Gollum", with the Turkish court spending time on investigating who Gollum was.

                      - Russia has slapped sanctions on Turkey, but Turkey has not retaliated and is seeking reconciliation but refusing to apologize.

                      - YPG (Kurdish forces) are continuing operations against Turkish-backed ISIS militants in the north.

Erdogan unable to stop the Kurds.

Kurds in Syria are now supported by Putin militarily and politically.

Female Canadian soldier who fought with Kurds against Isis says they are just 'a thorn in the side'

The supposedly fearsome terrorist cell 'runs away' from battle, she said

Jess Staufenberg Saturday 5 December 2015

The fighter left Vancouver to join the YPJ, the women's fighting branch of a Kurdish resistance force YouTube, Tiger Sun

A Canadian woman and soldier who has been fighting Isis in Syria has said they are "a thorn in the side" and a "knuckle-dragging pigs" in combat.

Hanna Bohman, who also goes by the name Tiger Sun, joined the female fighting battalion of a Kurdish nationalist force in Iraq in March last year.

From her experience of fighting the extremist group, Ms Bohman said the West's perception of Isis as a powerful force is misleading.

"They're not some giant, holy juggernaut of ultimate damnation for unbelievers," she told Business Insider.

"They’re just a bunch of filthy, mouth-breathing, knuckle-dragging pigs who run away at the first sign of resistance."

"Really nothing more than a thorn in the side."

The 46-year-old solider, who was a model and sales clerk in Vancouver before making the move, also said the majority of her time was not spent in battle but sleeping and being on-guard.

"It's not what people expect," she told Business Insider. "We're not constantly locked in a life or death battle with bullets and mortars flying back and forth."

She also said the most pressing issue was not Isis itself, but who Isis works for.

Ms Bohman said the extremist terrorist cell was working in part for President Erdogan of Turkey, who she said wanted the terrorists to eliminate the Kurdish "threat" to Turkey's national sovereignty.

"It's Turkey's genocidal Erdogan...who will eventually turn Turkey into a dictatorship while trying to kill off the Kurds," she told Business Insider.

Suggestions that Turkey's attacks on Kurdish fighters, such as the YPJ women's branch Ms Bohman is fighting for, has aided Isis have circulated for some time.

These have been recently reignited by claims from Russia that Turkey is smuggling Isis-controlled oil, the group's main source of revenue, into the NATO country.

Ms Bohman had to return home in June suffering from malnutrition, but rejoined the YPJ once more in September and remains there.

Idiots like Erdogan have even managed to get an ex-model from Vancouver, Canada to be fighting for Kurds in Syria against Turkish-backed Wahabi forces - An-Nusra and ISIS are both Wahabis/Salafis.

Iraq orders Turkey out of its territory after Turkey sends troops in to Mosul without Iraqi permission.

One Iraqi official hinted at calling Russian in!

Gollum, I mean Erdogan has backed down and his regime have said they will withdraw these Turkish troops from Iraq.

Out of Gas: Turkey Is Losing Its Battle With Russia

                              By Micah Halpern • 12/10/15 10:49am

Protesters hold placards and shout slogans as they take part in an anti-Turkey picket outside the Turkish embassy in Moscow

Turkey has told the Reuters news agency that Russia has stopped work on its nuclear power plants. In reality, the Turks are exaggerating. The Russians haven’t really stopped—they have really only slowed down.

It is another piece in the intensifying conflict that has enveloped Russia and Turkey over the downing of a Russian AU-24 slow moving bomber by a Turkish F-16 fighter jet.

The nuclear deal began in 2013. The Turks promised to pay $20 billion and the Russian nuclear company Rosatom promised to build four 1,200 megawatt nuclear electrical power plants in Turkey.

The first plant was scheduled to be opened in 2019, but from the very outset things have not run on schedule. One reason is that the project confronted international regulatory problems.

The Russians have done this before—only with Iran. They slowed down on the original proposal, Iran took the Russians to the World Court, and sued them. They wanted their nuclear plants.

Now, because of their experience with Iran, Russia realizes that stopping entirely would prove costly. Huge disincentives and penalties are built into the contract. And Turkey has already started shopping around for someone else to finish the nuclear job. Good luck.

Here is the crux of the problem and why Turkey can never win in this conflict with Russia. Turkey is almost totally dependent on imported energy. They have been counting on these nuclear plants and should be conducting back-door diplomatic negotiations to resurrect the deal , but they do not appear to be doing that. Tensions between the Turks and Russians do not seem to be dissipating.

So much so that Russia has also stopped importing Turkish fruits and vegetables. The reason they give is poor Turkish sanitation and hygiene, but the real reason is because the jet shot down the bomber.

This isn’t just a case of no more Turkish pistachio nuts or dates. Turkish fruits and vegetables account for 20 percentof Russia’s total fruit and vegetable consumption. This is a huge loss for the Turkish economy. A $4 billion annual loss in fruit and vegetable revenue. Russia has said they will easily make up the loss by importing more from Iran and Israel.

Russia has also cancelled the junkets and all expense included holiday vacation trips that Russians make every year to Turkey. The numbers tell the complete story. Last year 3.3 million Russians vacationed in Turkey. That was 10 percent of all the tourists that visited Turkey. For Russia, however pleasant they were, these vacations are not essential and they will find someplace else to fill their vacation needs. Turkey, however, will not find 3.3 million other tourists.

Russia wants to punish Turkey. That should be clear. And Vladimir Putin definitely has the ability to make things difficult for Turkey. The balance of trade is pretty clear. Russia purchases $30 billion in goods from Turkey per year. All of those services are easily replaced elsewhere.

But Turkey relies on Russia for $20 billion of natural gas every year. If that flow is even slightly altered, even for a single day—Turkey will grind to a halt. That natural gas engines Turkey’s electric grid.

Gas is next. Russia will start pulling it. They have already cancelled work on the underwater gas pipeline which, together with the nuclear electric plants, would eventually make Turkey more energy independent.

Turkey cannot get that much gas replaced. They are in public conflict not only with Russia but also with alternative suppliers. They sided with the Muslim Brotherhood so Egypt will not supply them. They have been very aggressively critical of Saudi Arabia so they will not supply them. There is always Israel and Israel could, potentially, help supply Turkey’s natural gas needs—but Turkey, a former ally of the Jewish state, has been openly hostile to Israel.

The Russian minister of agriculture has said, “Allah has already decided to punish Turkey’s ruling clique, depriving them of mind and reason.”

For their part, Turkey is counting on the help of the EU and the general disdain almost everyone has for Putin and his style of leadership especially in the aftermath of Russia’s land grab on Crimea and their invasion of Ukraine.

But Turkey is misreading the situation. Just because the world criticizes Putin and Russia it does not translate into action.

This is the case even in the Middle East. Russia marched into Syria, set up a huge air-force base, and established a significant presence. The West warned the Russians not to put boots on the ground. Russia went in anyway and their actions were met with only a few tepid condemnations. When the Turkish F-16 jet shot down the SU-24 Russia bomber, that’s when international voices were raised— and they were raised to urge calm and deescalate tensions, not to blame Russia.

Turkey thinks that because there are UN sanctions against Russia there is a way to leverage that power and squeeze Russia. If the world stood by when Russian military pranced into Ukraine and Crimea how can Turkey expect them to act now?

Russia will get away with everything. And despite pressure that Turkey is trying to apply—the real pressure will be placed by Russia on Turkey. No one is willing to step forward and help Turkey. If this continues, Russia will destroy them.

If the world stood by when Russian military pranced into Ukraine and Crimea how can Turkey expect them to act now?
