  • Karachi shut after over 40 killed in clashes

KARACHI: Clashes that killed at least 40 people overnight in Karachi scared residents off its streets on Tuesday as Pakistan’s largest city was on alert for more violence after the shooting of a leader in a dominant political party.
Police said more than 90 people were wounded and dozens of vehicles and shops torched as mobs who took to the streets after Raza Haider, a member of the provincial Sindh Assembly from the Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM), was gunned down on Monday along with his bodyguard while attending a funeral.
The government blamed the Taliban and the banned militant group Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistan (SSP) for the killing of the lawmaker. Twenty people have been arrested in connection with the violence, federal Interior Minister Rehman Malik told the Senate on Tuesday.
The violence once again raised fears of instability in Karachi, a city of 18 million and Pakistan's commercial hub, and about the flight of Taliban militants to the city after army offensives against their bases in Pakistan's northwest.
Some analysts said the violence could ultimately affect the economy. Karachi is home to the country's main port, the central bank and the stock exchange, which has so far seen thin trade and will close an hour early because of the violence.
“This obviously raises concern and anxiety, and if these things continue, Pakistan’s economy gets undermined,” said Hasan-Askari Rizvi, a political and security analyst.
“It is a pathetic situation and exposes the helplessness of the government to perform its basic duty towards its citizens,” said Rizvi.
The stock market was open on Tuesday but trade was dull and attendance thin due to security concerns. The main index was flat by 1:00 pm (0800 GMT), but dealers said the violence could dampen investor sentiment.
Police and officials said that they also found evidence suggesting that militants had planned a suicide attack during Haider's funeral, scheduled for later on Tuesday.
“On the basis of evidence available at the moment, it (the killing of Haider) was carried out by the Tehrik-e-Taliban and Sipah-e-Sahaba,” Malik told reporters in Islamabad.
The MQM, a coalition partner in the federal as well as the provincial Sindh government, renewed calls for a crackdown on militants after the killing of its lawmaker.
“For the past 3 to 4 years we have been pointing out and giving evidence about the presence of Taliban and extremists in Karachi,” said Wasay Jalil, a spokesman for the MQM.
“We were ridiculed at that time. But now everyone is admitting that the Taliban and the SSP are here.”
    POLITICAL FORCES AND ARMED GROUPS
On Tuesday, a day after the killing, Karachi was tense as police and paramilitary troops patrolled deserted streets.
Hyderabad, the second largest city of the province, was also largely deserted as were other towns after the MQM called for three days of mourning.
“This could be the last nail in the coffin and could be disastrous for the stock market because as it is, volume has been below average and this may lead to foreign investors exiting the market,” said Sajid Bhanji, a director at brokerage Arif Habib Ltd, of Haider’s killing and the ensuring violence.
Karachi has a long history of ethnic, religious and sectarian violence. It was a main target of al Qaeda-linked militants after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the United States, when Pakistan joined the US-led campaign against militancy, and foreigners were attacked in the city several times.
“All political forces in Karachi have their armed groups,” Rizvi said. “And then there are a lot of other groups - criminal, sectarian, drug mafia.”
Including last night's death toll, officials say at least 193 people have been killed in targeted attacks since the start of the year, although analysts and political parties say the number is likely much higher.
Mohajirs, the descendants of Urdu-speakers who migrated from India after the creation of Pakistan in 1947, are the biggest community and dominate the city's administration through the MQM.
It is also home to the largest concentration of ethnic Pashtuns outside the northwest.
Government officials also say criminals, including drug lords competing for turf in the city’s teeming neighbourhoods, take advantage of the tension, complicating the police’s difficulties. – Reuters

I know MQM is always saying Karachi Pashtuns are all a bunch of drug dealers, arms smugglers, extremists/terrorists and everything else bad they can think of. I know that's not true and I'm sure most people here know that's not true. Most of us are intelligent enough to know MQM and our other enemies lie/exaggerate to make Pashtuns seem like we are all terrible but we do have SOME criminals too. Can we deny that? Maybe it was insensitive to mention the name of certain tribes but I feel certain that that was not done maliciously. Anyway regardless I don't see how or why people would blame Karachi Pashtuns for this violence. MQM is a hateful terrorist organization who has made it clear how they feel about Pashtuns even though MOST Pashtuns in Karachi are good people just trying to survive.I also have been told that many, many of the Pashtuns murdered by MQM were innocent and killed ONLY because they were Pashtun.

They insult a few maseeds and accuse them of drug dealing then in turn you label the whole of Afghanistan (the land of your forefathers) as drug dealers land.

Pashtuns are not angels, you will find pashtun prostitutes, durg dealers, gamblers, peadophiles and homosexuals. We are not some special humans devoid of any flaws.

Don't take criticism so personally. I know your love your poeple but please be more careful as this kind of approach only brings divison and further problems.

I might not say anything in reply but a few hot headed individuals might get up start swearing at each other.

Playing the victim. Yet another similarity between the MQM and Zionist Israel.

MQM once AGAIN accuses the ANP of supporting the Taliban despite the fact that Mian Iftikhar's own son was killed by them.

MQM being punished for speaking against arms mafia

KARACHI: The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) said the party is being penalized for raising the voice against arms and drug mafia, Geo News reported Tuesday.

Addressing a press conference after the burial of the party’s MPA Raza Hyder, the MQM’s Rabta Committee member Anees Qaimkhani said, ‘Raza Hyder stayed with the party in its thick and thin.’

Qaimkhani said party’s unit was attacked by armed saboteurs on July 23, when party workers were killed. Jamil Khanzada was killed in firing incident in a graveyard.

‘We could have talked about politics of vengeance; but, we opted against it,’ he remarked urging Awami National Party (ANP) to abandon patronizing land mafia and drug mafia.

He went on to assert that the ANP pursues discrete policies in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Sindh.

‘We bowed down to injustice neither in past nor would we do so in future as well,’ the MQM leader emphasized praying to Allah to grant eternal peace to the martyred souls of the party.

He said the MQM chief Altaf Hussain had already informed about the threat of Talibanization, but the provincial government did not heed it.

The MQM leader Anees Qaimkhani said the party workers were busy with relief efforts for flood-affected people in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on appeal by Altaf Hussain.

Qaimkhani demanded the government to conduct a high-level inquiry into the murder of Raza Hyder.

Taliban and the jihadi organizations are being making hideouts in the city, he said, everyone knows where these Taliban get holed up.

Awami National Party (ANP) is patronizing Taliban in Karachi, he alleged stressing the government, ‘We don’t want pledges in words only, instead, we want results.’

The party’s workers are being assassinated for last few months, he said.

‘We want the arrest of the murderers of Raza Hyder,’ he demanded.

The MQM leader demanded the government to conduct a high level probe into the killing of MPA Raza Hyder.

Anees said he questions Rehman Malik why no crackdown was started against terrorists, who to his reckoning, were planning to embark on some terror activity.

To think that they'd stop accusing the ANP of harboring Taliban terrorists and to think that despite killing Pashtun laborers everyday in the streets for the past month, they'd show some remorse or restraint, these barbaric murderers of the innocent and the unarmed have made even greater claims today.

Then why you care about a bunch of drug-dealers speaking Dari or even Chinese? Before pointing your finger at drug-dealers, just listen to your fellow country as what they have to say about Waziris.

I completely agree with you Musafira......Of course some of the pukhtuns there, are involved in land grabing and other criminal activities, one of my friend went to Karachi, get involved in these activities, then imprisoned and now he is back home....he told me that the only way a pakhtun can survive and live among the Muhajirs is to deal with them using their own tactics...i.e Ghunda gardee....
Actually the Sindhis are too coward they have been pushed back by the Muhajirs and their lands have been grabed from them....but they are silent.....on the other hand pukhtuns of Karachi are a bit organised they have a little political support of ANP, so they are the continueus source of inconvenience for MQM...Most of the Pukhtuns living in Karachi are peacful people who do various little jobs to earn money and fed their families but a few are involved in criminal activities whome MQM considers a threat to their Ghunda gardi and so they are targeting them ..but mostly innocent pashtuns like sabzi wala, dukandar, hotel wala etc are killed by Muhajirs....so the real cause behind these killings is the one that MQM does not want any other group to counter and check their criminal activities using the same tactics of Ghunda gardi....but it may also be noted that a third group is also involved there to worsen the situation there and that is probably the "lashkar jhangvee" and other banned taliban organisations......

Members such as Shombly and other Afghans pointed out only three tribes as being the owners of the drug trade. The Wazirs,Maseed and Afridis.

He ignores the fact that opiem or whatever its not produced in Waziristan so openly and they must get all from Afghanistan since Afghanistan is known as the country which gets most of its GDP from the Drug trade.

This is what angers mean is when people resort to tribes as being owners of this and owners of that. Some times I get the suspious that these Afghans on here have some kind of envious hatred towards people of Pakhtunkhwa especially those from Tribal areas.

I just cant beleive there are Pashtuns from Pakhtunkhwa who give thanks to such people who openly insult them.

This Anti Qabalee propaghanda mission needs to stop just because the tribal people never forget how much Afghanistan betray them especially during the british wars doesnt mean they go to name calling and making up their own stories as if they worked as some kind of under cover job role.

What makes me even more angry is that I know people there who are maseed and wazir and they were killed by these MQM and we had an Afghan on here who insulted those innocents who were killed by saying MQM targets drug dealers and those involved in drugs trade.

                    Kind Regards

I would also like to add:-

Bengal Tiger I know you work for Directorate-General of National Security Intelligence. The wordings you use makes it very obvious.

You use things such as he is enemy of pashtuns etc when infact you have absolutely no experience in Politics of Pashtuns.

You only want to "USE PASHTUNS" to get one back on Pakistan.
