A car bomb has claimed the lives of five children in Afghanistan's Kandahar, as an alarm is raised over the sudden rise in civilian casualties in the war-torn country.
Afghan officials said that a car bomber, targeting a local Afghan official, blew himself up near a market area in Dand district early Monday, AFP reported.
The district chief escaped unharmed, the Afghan officials confirmed.
No group has claimed responsibility for the bombing. But, as additional US forces have poured into the southern Taliban strongholds of Kandahar and Helmand provinces, the Taliban have mounted attacks on those affiliated with the Afghan government.
The incident comes a day after another bomb exploded in Kandahar, claiming the lives of six civilians.
The news comes a few days after the United Nations Human Rights Office in Afghanistan reported over 1,013 civilian deaths in the first six months of 2009.
The figure shows a 24 percent rise compared to the same period in 2008, the UN News Center reported.
The report focused on improvised explosive devices and militant attacks as well as airstrikes conducted by government and US-led forces.
Civilians have been the main victims of violence in Afghanistan, particularly in the country's troubled southern and eastern provinces.
