It is now becoming clear why the US never was serious about bombing ISIS to oblivion since they were always worried that Russia might enter the mix. They were keeping ISIS as a backup for balancing Iranian influence.

In trying to accommodate Iran, US sidelined the entire Middle East(including Israel) . Aside from avoiding an immediate conflict with Iran, there have been no other positive outcomes for US policy with Iran and in Syria.

US wanted Iran as a strategic ally, and was unable to get there because of Russian-Iranian ties.

The whole toppling of the Taliban and Saddam had no strategic benefit to the US since those two were containing Iran and the former a threat to Russian influence in central asia.
