  • Selfie with dead grandad shocks Saudi Arabia

Manama: Saudi Arabia authorities have launched an investigation into a selfie taken by a teenager next to his grandfather lying dead at a hospital.

The young teenager posted the selfie on social media, with the caption "Good Bye, Grandfather", triggering a wave of condemnation and criticism by angry users who called for a prompt probe into the "immoral issue."

Users said the hospital officials should find out how the hospital failed to respect the dead man's dignity and how a child could take a selfie with him.

"The health authorities in Madinah are looking into the case and assessing whether the selfie was taken at a hospital in the area," Abdul Razak Hafedh, the head of public relations and media in the Madinah area, said.

"Should that be the case, action will certainly be taken against all culprits for allowing or failing to prevent such an immoral act. The security authorities will also be alerted to take action against the teenager for his irresponsible behavior and for his violation of public morals," he added, Saudi daily Al Watan reported on Wednesday.

Saud Al Harbi, a lawyer, said the teenager's behavior was a crime punishable by law.

"It is a terrible provocation of common feelings and a flagrant violation of public morals," he said. "The society completely rejects such attitudes that are not condoned in any way by its values or traditions."

Mansoor Hamed Al Hazmi attributed the selfie to a desire to validate a behavior that is contrary to social norms.

"This segment of teenagers is keen on shocking society by adopting outrageous attitudes, such as quarrelling, group fights, speeding, or raising the volume of the car radio. Some of them simply want to draw attention to themselves," he said.

      This is a teenager only..

I feel so offended when I come across pictures of people in facebook who have died of either road accidents or terrorist attack a in Afghanistan.
You don't have the family's permission to load the picture of their loved ones in that state for everyone to watch. How would you feel if that was your son or child, laying by the side of the road like an animal and people walked around, snatching pictures as if it was some sort of a freak show. Even if its pictures of terrorists. What are you teaching people when you take a pose with your foot over the chest of a dead human body while wearing the uniform of someone who is supposed to be carrying himself with dignity and defining integrity??
Why are our people so cruel, heartless and mannerless??

Please, voice your disapproval whenever you come across such nonsense to get the point across. This sort of behaviour is very disappointing.

huh. I said that about his father two years ago and even though I feel guilty for doing that, it's funny that A) he should aim my recycled insults towards his own parent and B) he should think he is in the position to be judging his mother for her decision of marrying his father..

Anyways, if you must know, yeminies are an awful lot similar in their cultural ways to Pashtuns when compared.

You are so used to being abused that when no one else is doing it to you, you do it to yourself.

Damn it, I made the mistake of treating you like a human being again. This is what happens when society stops communicating with certain creatures. They get overwhelmed when someone communicates with them for a change and end up saying the stupidest things in return.

Yeah usually disingenuous remarks which are based on made up nonsense backfire. Thanks though. your absurd idea of "humanity" is duly noted
