  • Pakistan’s troubling rape problem

There are 1.5 million street kids in Pakistan -- an estimated 90% of them have been sexually abused at some point in their lives.

Rape in Pakistan is so common, it’s barely taboo. Last week the Daily Mail interviewed a bus driver from Peshawar who says, after his shift is over, he likes to go into the slums and rape street kids. Sometimes he pays them a dollar. But often he doesn’t – he just joins in a big gang rape.

“Once, there was a boy on the bus and everyone had sex with him,” he told the Daily Mail. “I did it too but what else could I do? They invited me. And he was that kind of boy anyway.” He says he’s raped 12 different children.

This wasn’t a solitary rapist, hiding in the shadows, afraid of being seen or being caught. This was men joining together, unworried about social norms, unworried about someone stopping them.

A poll of 1,800 Pakistani men found that a third don’t think raping street kids is a crime – and they don’t even think it’s a bad thing to do.

And then there’s so-called honour killings – where families kill their own daughters for social improprieties, real or perceived.

Every year close to 1,000 Pakistani girls are murdered by their own fathers, brothers or even mothers, for “moral indiscretions” ranging from going out on a date to dressing in western clothing to marrying the wrong man.

What a horrific duality -- a country that has normalized the rape of children, but would rather murder its own daughters than have embarrassing gossip about them.

No wonder so many Pakistanis are happy to emigrate. Put aside the ongoing terrorist civil war, put aside official discrimination against minority religions, such as Christianity or even other Muslim denominations like the Ahmadiyyas -- Pakistan drives out its best, those who want a better life, a life of freedom and peace and safety.

Canada is the lucky recipient of many such immigrants. The Sun’s columnist Tarek Fatah is a perfect example of that – someone so Canadian he probably has maple syrup in his veins. But not all Pakistani immigrants prefer our liberal values to those of the Peshawar bus driver.

Aqsa Parvez was a young woman who was murdered by her father and her brother for the honour crime of dressing and acting like a Canadian teenager. They imported the worst of Pakistan to Mississauga

Rotherham, UK, has received another import: mass rape gangs. Between 1997 and 2013, that city of just 250,000 had 1,400 girls – as young as 11 – systematically “groomed," raped and prostituted by Pakistani gangs. Fourteen-hundred out of a city of 250,000. The girls were white Christians; in the eyes of the Pakistani Muslim gangs, they were sub-human, like Pakistan’s own street orphans.

Rotherham police knew all about it. But they were paralyzed with fear – fear of being called racist if they dared to act. They found the mass rape of a generation of the city’s girls less intolerable than the risk of being called politically incorrect or “Islamophobic."

Back to Canada. Pakistan is the fourth largest source of immigrants to our country – nearly 100,000 in the past decade. Most of them are wonderful, peaceful Canadians, like Tarek. But how many are like the Peshawar bus driver, or the Rotherham rape gangs, or Muhammad Parvez?

Pakistan, like some other Muslim countries, has a rape problem. Perhaps before opening up the floodgates, we might want to do something as simple as asking a prospective immigrant for their views on women, rape and honour.

There are 1.5 million street kids in Pakistan -- an estimated 90% of them have been sexually abused at some point in their lives.

Typical xenophobic Western newspaper worried about the "wrong sort of immigrants".

There may be a rape problem in Pakistan, like in any other country, but there is no way in hell that "A poll of 1,800 Pakistani men found that a third don’t think raping street kids is a crime – and they don’t even think it’s a bad thing to do."

    This is simply not true.

Although i admit, i did find a parts of this article a bit dubious and doubtful, but Pakistan does indeed suffer from rape problems. There was a girl in punjab who got raped in school by one of her teachers. But i do agree, most of this article is just over exaggeration, especially the "rape is common problem in all muslim countries" line.

Pakistan has many serious social problems apart from the constant terrorism or sectarian infighting we hear about.

        There is:

        - Slavery: With 2 million slaves in the country it has the 3rd highest slave population in the world.

        Slaves of Pakistan.

Aside from that form of slavery mentioned above i.e. forced labour. There is also the semi-slavery of large parts of feudal rural Pakistan (in fact some say one of the reasons that the West Pakistani elite deliberately decided to get rid of the "troublesome" eastern wing {east Pakistan now Bangladesh} is that the Bengalis had abolished feudalism as early as 1951), dominated by powerful landlords or "zamindars", "waderas" etc.

Lack of hygiene: Pakistan has a huge toilet problem.

More than 40 million people in Pakistan do not have access to a toilet, forcing them to defecate outside, which is a major contributor to stunting in the country, a top UNICEF official said.

        Why?

Pakistan a few decades ago was seen as a leading light of the "third world" (a term which is for some a code word for non-white world) and was ahead of both Malaysia and South Korea.

So why is it that a country which was ahead of prosperous countries and strong economies now a complete cesspit of misery, suffering and poverty?

People attribute Pakistan's terrorism problems to the Zia period when he promoted "Islamization" (in speech marks since what we know as traditional "Islam" actually conflicts with the Quran, as a student of Islam who has studied in an Islamic theological school in an Arab country I can say this with some authority).

What about the poverty and suffering in the country?

        Pakistan: Security state/feudal state

Pakistan is not a normal country. It is essentially a military with a country, rather than like most other countries a country with a military.

The military rule the control and divert much needed cash to buying weapons mainly to feed their egos of being a big and powerful state and also due to their deep psychopathic hatred of "evil Hindu" India.

After the army the second biggest component of the Pakistani establishment are the feudal elite who do not want to see a more urban Pakistan (as that means feudal villagers from the countryside desert their feudal estates) or a more prosperous one as their power will be undermined.

Most powerful man in Pakistan and real ruler of the country, Raheel Sharif. Sharif is ultimately responsible for the massive raping occuring in the country and the 41 million Pakistanis without toilets.

        What is the solution?

        - Civilian control of the army.
        - Abolition of feudalism.

These things are not the only things needed but they play a key role in a better Pakistan and it is these two groups above amongst others that lead to the 1971 humiliation.

However it is very unlikely that America will ever allow Pakistanis to restrict the role of their army in their country's affairs. Also many of the Pakistani middle class would prefer to be seen as a powerful country with a big army (with the huge poverty hidden to the world) rather than as a country with decent basic living standards and a normal army.

Yes, that's how they spread fear and hatred against us. Not a single Western newspaper ever has anything positive to say about Muslims, Islam, Brown people or Pakistan. Only Al Jazeera can be trusted.

Pakistan does have its share of problems but its not the rape capital of the world. I'd say more rapes happen in the USA or India than in Pakistan.

            @Toramana
            1) The slavery and feudalism you mention is in Sindh not all over Pakistan.

            2) The toilet issue is not nearly as big in Pakistan as it is in India. You can see evidence of this here: I brought this up previously on Defence.pk

            http://defence.pk/threads/india%E2%8.../#post-6861723

The rest of your post I agree with.

Pakistan needs a new leader like me instead of the same old musical chairs game between the Shareefs and Zardaris and others. Imran Khan is an idiot and Canadian citizen Tahir ul Qadri should go back to Canada.

Killzai, a lot of these problems stem from socio-economic factors.

However socio-economic problems can be resolved by good politicians hence I brought in the Pakistani military in this.

              1. The feudal problem is not just in Sindh but also in Balochistan (where most of the Sindhi waderas {landlords} come from as most of them are ancestrally Balochi e.g. Zardari) and also in southern Punjab.

              2. The toilet issue might not be as bad as India, but has anyone here ever given India as a fine example of success?

41 million Pakistanis without toilets means 1 in 5 of Pakistanis (some say unofficially Pakistan's population is 200 million) do not have a toilet.

This is after 70 years of "independence", primarily being ruled by the corrupt Punjabi-dominated military.

Karachiwalas (such as yourself) are different to Punjabis and other Pakistanis in that you are not mainly rural people from a feudal background and value education more, hence these things are less common amongst Karachiwalas/Mohajirs as opposed to the more tribal Punjabi/Balochi and other races in Pakistan.

In other words socio-economic factors are very important in all this.
