Monitoring Turkish strongman Recep Tayyip Erdogan

Turkey’s democracy on the path to a police state

Erdogan’s power grab is diminishing the global reputation of the country
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is showing little restraint as he transforms Turkey into an authoritarian state built around himself. Over recent years, he has eroded democratic freedom and pluralism in his country, curbing the media, cracking down on protesters and undermining the independent judiciary. Since his election as head of state six months ago, he has taken this draconian streak to a new level as he sets about concentrating his personal power. If he is allowed to go much further, Turkey will no longer possess the basic standards required in a democracy.

Since 2011, Mr Erdogan’s Justice and Development Party (AKP) has taken so many actions to constrict personal freedom that it is hard to distinguish one crackdown from the next. But a bill to be introduced in parliament in the next few days gives the police extensive new powers and is reason for concern. The law would expand police rights to use firearms, allowing them to search people or vehicles without a court order and detain them for up to 48 hours without prior authorisation by a prosecutor. Demonstrators who cover their faces with masks or scarves during violent demonstrations could face four years in prison. Opposition parties say that the bill, if approved, would mark a decisive step towards Turkey becoming a police state.

It is not just the detail of the law that is worrying but also its timing, a few months ahead of this summer’s parliamentary elections. Mr Erdogan has left little secret that he wants the June poll to deliver an AKP majority that is big enough to implement constitutional changes that turn the country into a presidential system. As the election approaches, he therefore wants to keep a lid on public order, deterring the demonstrations that rocked his leadership in the past.

Mr Erdogan’s authoritarianism is damaging Turkey in several ways. It is undermining its reputation as a democracy that other states in the region could reasonably emulate. Five years ago, President Barack Obama declared that the US and Turkey were a “model partnership” with shared values. Mr Erdogan has made a mockery of this statement. The way he is personalising power and constricting domestic freedom makes him increasingly analogous to Russia’s Vladimir Putin.

His authoritarianism is also undermining Turkey’s international standing. As a nation of 77m situated at the crossroads between Europe and the Middle East, Turkey ought to be a strategic player at a time of profound upheaval in the Arab world. Instead, its foreign policy appears to be driven by the president’s personal whim. This has frayed Turkey’s ties with its neighbours. In particular, Mr Erdogan has seemed unpersuaded by the urgency of taking on the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant — or Isis.

His authoritarian streak risks, above all, undermining Turkey’s long-term economic prospects. The growth rate is 3 per cent, well below the 9 per cent seen at the start of this decade. One reason for this decline is that private investment has been flat for the past three years. If the trend is to be reversed, foreign and domestic investors need a boost of confidence in Turkey’s prospects. But Mr Erdogan’s repeated attacks on the central bank — haranguing it for not cutting interest rates even though inflation is well above target — only add to perceptions of political risk.
Turkey is too big strategically ever to lapse into irrelevance. But under Mr Erdogan, its international role is diminishing, its economic prospects are becoming clouded and its vibrant population is falling under his shadow.

Ex-Miss Turkey faces prison for ‘insulting’ Erdogan

Merve Buyuksarac might be facing jail time for a satirical post on her Instagram account.

By Associated Press | Ankara, Turkey

    Thursday, 26 February 2015

The lawyer for a model and former Miss Turkey says she could face up to two years in prison for social media posts that prosecutors have deemed to be critical of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Emre Telci said Wednesday an Istanbul prosecutor is demanding that Merve Buyuksarac be prosecuted on charges of insulting a public official. A court will decide whether to start proceedings.

Buyuksarac was detained last month for sharing a satirical poem on her Instagram account. She denies insulting Erdogan.

She becomes the latest figure to face trial for insulting Erdogan, amid fear the country is lurching toward authoritarian rule.

In recent years, Turkey has curbed media freedoms, cracked down on critical social media postings and prosecuted hundreds of people who took part in mass anti-government protests.

High school student on trial for tweet insulting Erdoğan

After an exhaustive year-long search, police were able to identify the fifteen year old offender who now faces trial for insulting Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on Twitter.

High school student on trial for tweet insulting Erdoğan

A fifteen-year-old student from the western city of Manisa has joined the swelling ranks of citizens on trial for insulting Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. After an exhaustive year-long search police were able to identify the IP number of the student responsible for the tweet he posted on Feb. 11, 2014. Identified only by his initials F.G., the culprit will stand trial on April 16th.

The student’s lawyer Ercan Kanar denounced the effort expended on acquiring the IP number of a boy who was just 14 at the time of the incident.

“They dedicated ten times more energy to getting his IP number than they do for murder cases,” he said. Kanar noted that the police had neither bothered getting a statement from the plaintiff, nor asking President Erdoğan if he wanted to press charges. He accused those responsible of being 'toadies' and said that their actions would only get the public to hate the president.

F.G. is just one person among a growing number of criminal prosecutions over insulting the Turkish president. Four people have been arrested on that charge in the past three days alone, three of whom were under 18 years of age, and a total of 110 criminal indictments have been filed in the past decade over the crime.

Punishments for such charges vary, with one high school student in Antalya receiving almost 8 months in prison, while another young adult in Istanbul received a TL 7000 ($2,850) fine this past Tuesday for an insulting tweet. Judge Mehmet Hamzaçebi defended his ruling over the TL 7000 fine, saying “giving people the freedom to destroy other people’s freedom would destroy democracy.”

Biography of Erdoğan gets slapped with court case

A court case has been opened against the author of a biography of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan -- and the court is threatening to collect all copies of the book, according to the author's Twitter feed on Tuesday.

The biography, Big Boss, was written by journalist Mustafa Hoş, and "portrays Erdoğan and his relations and network at a level of detail 'never known before',” according to the book's promo. It is now one of country's bestsellers.

Mustafa Hoş announced the legal persecution he was facing on numerous postings on Twitter. The complaint was filed by Hasan Yeşildağ, believed to be an acquaintance of President Erdoğan. Yeşildağ demands “TL 20,000 in damages for libel and insult” according to one of Hoş’s posts, which also features some close up of photos of the documents.

Author faces prison sentence over insulting Turkish president’s son

A criminal indictment has been filed against an author over insulting President Erdoğan’s son Bilal. If found guilty, the author could face up to two years and eight months in prison.

Author faces prison sentence over insulting Turkish president’s son

An investigation launched upon complaint by Bilal Erdoğan, son of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, against “Hırsız Vaar” (Thief!) author Ali Emre Özsoy has been completed. Conducted by prosecutor Umut Tepe of the İstanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office Press Department, the investigation concluded that Özsoy’s book insulted Bilal Erdoğan as per precedents set by the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) and Turkey’s High Court of Appeals.

The grievance was over plaintiff Necmeddin Bilal Erdoğan being portrayed as a member of a criminal organization who facilitated illegal activities upon orders of his father, and his depiction on the cover wearing a robber’s mask. The indictment stated that portraying the plaintiff with the mask under the word ‘thief’ “demeaned and insulted [the plaintiff] and overstepped the limits of criticism.”

The indictment filed against Ali Emre Özsoy calls for between four months and two years and eight months incarceration over ‘insulting one’s honor, pride and respectability.’

Journalist tried for 2 yrs in prison for insulting Erdoğan on Facebook

Adana-based journalist Mine Bekiroğlu is being charged with insulting then-Prime Minister and current President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, on Facebook, in the 2014 Gezi Park protests.

Journalist tried for 2 yrs in prison for insulting Erdoğan on Facebook

Bekiroğlu had been detained by Adana National Police Cyber Crimes Unit on 5 February 2014.

The indictment prepared by the prosecutor has been accepted by the 6th Adana Criminal Court of First Instance. The allegation involves “insulting a public offical through a communication on the internet.”

Testifying to the judge Bekiroğlu expressed that her remarks on Facebook “contained no insults, but only criticism.”

The journalist expressed that the incident that prompted her to write on Facebook occurred during the nationwide anti-government Gezi Park protests, when her vehicles windows were broken by pro-government supporters, after Bekiroğlu had been playing the Turkish national anthem from her car’s radio.

Turkey boasts one of the worst records of press freedom. The country sits at 154th in the World Press Freedom Index. In recent months there have been a notable number of detainments of journalists over their comments on Twitter and Facebook.

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has frequently lashed out at Twitter, vowing to 'eradicate it.' A recent law proposal debated by Parliament seeks to grant ministers permission to order temporary blocks of websites in instances related to civil disorder.

Reporters Without Borders, Human Rights Watch and the European Union are amongst numerous international bodies which have condemned the persecution of free press by the ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party).

Erdoğan has remained defiant, claiming “more raids will follow” after the December 14 raid, while telling the European Union to "mind its own business" plus claiming that Turkey had the best record.

Calling Turkish President Erdoğan ‘average’ now a criminal offense

A doctor is on trial and could receive up to two years in prison for insulting President Erdoğan with a Facebook post suggesting he is just as religious as the average Turk.
Calling Turkish President Erdoğan ‘average’ now a criminal offense

Psychiatrist Ahmet Koyuncu is facing up to two years in prison for insulting President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on popular social media platform Facebook. The offending post suggested that Erdoğan represented the average Turk in both demeanor and religiosity.

Turkish daily Cumhuriyet reported the case of Koyuncu and his article titled “Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is Turkey's average. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is Turkey.” Posted under a pseudonym on June 19th 2014, the article contained lines such as “Milking religion until the very end but not in any way lacking when it comes to cursing and discrimination, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s religiosity is the religiosity of the average Turk. Mr. Erdoğan’s vindictiveness is the vindictiveness of the average Turk.”

Renowned for his work on social anxiety, Koyuncu has penned several articles in international academic journals, six books and a novel. He defended his Facebook post, saying it contained no insult, that it was an academic piece and that this indictment was simply “his academic article and science itself being put on trial.”

The article criticized both then-Prime Minister Erdoğan as well as private hospitals, and it was the president of the Private Hospitals Association Dr. Reşat Bahat who filed a criminal complaint against Koyuncu on the grounds that he had insulted both the prime minister and himself. An investigation by the prosecutor’s office dropped Bahat’s charge, but proceeded with the one against insulting Erdoğan. The first hearing is scheduled for March 18th.

Koyuncu said that his article contained a bio-psychosocial analysis based on scientific grounds and that the prosecutor had simply taken some lines out of context and included them in the indictment. He went on to recount that he wrote the piece during an emotional time following the mine disaster in Soma last Spring where 301 miners died. There was an incident which had gone viral at the time, explained Koyuncu, with Erdoğan visiting the site when a local citizen said something in protest which prompted the prime minister to start slapping him while shouting ‘where are you off to you Israeli sperm?’ Those comments didn’t just exhibit verbal and physical aggression said Koyuncu, but also featured insult, discrimination and a hate crime: “I wasn’t criticizing Erdoğan with my article, but rather the behavioral characteristics of the public.”

He went on to add, “there wasn’t this much repression even in the period of military rule following the 1980 coup.”

Meanwhile another doctor in the western city of Aydın is facing disciplinary action for insulting Erdoğan by implying that he’s too extraordinary. Dr. Bilgin Çiftçi risks being barred from public service by the Public Health Institution of Turkey (THSK) for sharing on Facebook a meme that compares President Erdoğan to well-known Lord of the Rings character Gollum/Sméagol.

                Erdogan was compared to Gollum.

Turkish daily Evrensel reported that the THSK began an investigation against Çiftçi on the grounds that he had insulted Erdoğan by posting an image that juxtaposes the images of Erdoğan and Gollum, and compares their manner of eating and startled expressions. Reported by a follower of Çiftçi’s Facebook page, the THSK began an investigation on the grounds that it was an attempt to “reduce, belittle and hurt the regard felt towards certain values.”

The indictment also features the complete biography of Gollum himself, including that he was an old Hobbit originally named Sméagol born in the Gladden Fields who received the one ring by killing his cousin Déagol and that the ring prolonged his life but turned him into an unrecognizable monstrosity who survived by murder and eating tainted meat. The indictment went on to add, “to say such a comparison was not meant to insult our president is an understatement.”

As the post is deemed ideological and banned, the THSK is demanding that Çiftçi be removed from civil service and lose points on his medical license for “not abiding by the professional and ethical rules of the Medical Deontological [Code of Ethics] Regulation.”

The THSK had cancelled Dr. Şerafettin Kılınçel’s contract last month over a post on social media as well.

My personal opinion on Erdogan, though some here like him.

                  Good

                  - Gave greater freedom to Turks. No matter how "bad" Erdogan is he is no way as bad as the Kemalists who use to rule Turkey and carried out the destruction of 3,000 Kurdish villages and making 3 million Kurds refugees or who suppressed religion.

The Kemalists and their army used to run torture chambers and use to murder people and carry out horrific brutality e.g. force torture victims to eat human excrement.

So Erdogan will be a legend in the history of Turkey as the man who ultimately destroyed Kemalists (fascists), a heroic achievement.

                  - Gave greater rights to Turkey's Kurds. Before Ataturk and his successors sought to carry out cultural genocide of the Kurds and they were even dubbed "mountain Turks".

                  - Gave greater rights to Muslim Turks. Before Ataturk and the Kemalists did things such as banning Hajj, suppressing and killing Muslims. Erdogan gave greater rights to Muslims.

                  - Ethnic and cultural pluralism. Kemalists forbade or discouraged any other form of cultural expression besides a Turkish one, whereas now in Turkey people are rediscovering their Kurdish, Laz, Hemsin and other identities and expressing it.

                  - Championing the rights of Muslim minorities and speaking out against Islamophobia. The Erdogan government has won the respect of many Muslims including Bangladeshis for their championing of the Rohingya cause and seeking to help protect Muslim minorities in the west by speaking out against Islamophobia. The Erdogan government's championing of the Rohingya cause is truly admirable and heroic.

                  - Clamped down on the fascist Kemalist military. Erdogan put the fascist Turkish generals in their place and now they know they are servants of the people not their masters.

If it comes down to a choice between Kemalists (fascists and murderers) and Erdogan, I will chose Erdogan any day.

                  BAD

                  - Supports extremists in other Muslim countries. Erdogan is destabilizing Egypt by supporting the radical "Muslim" Brotherhood as well as supporting the Jamaat e "Islami" terrorist organization in Bangladesh.

                  - Ruined Turkey's relations with Arab and Muslim countries.

                  - Iraq hates him as he disrespects their sovereignty and territorial integrity by siding with the Iraqi Kurds e.g. Erdogan officials have visited Iraqi Kurdistan without the permission of the Iraqi government.

                  - Syria hates him as he is supporting terrorists there, though he has been largely defeated e.g. the Turkmen militia he supported have basically been destroyed.

                  - Bangladesh hates him because of his support for war criminals.

                  - Egypt hates him because of his support for anti-government extremists.

                  - Iran dislikes him because of his support for anti-Syrian extremists.

                  - Libya hates him because of his support for extremists in their country with the Libyan government carrying out sanctions against his regime recently.

                  - Algeria dislikes him (though not hate) as they dislike the radicals he supports.

                  - GCC states, dislike his pro-Brotherhood policies.

                  - Neo-Ottoman meglamonia

Erdogan and his regime have been accused of arrogant neo-Ottoman meglamonia. The Ottoman state was a failed state which cared mainly for the largely European/white Muslims of Rumelia (Istanbul, Thrace and the region east of Istanbul) and neglected ethnic Turks, Arabs and others.

It is well known that the US seeks to promote "neo-Ottomanism" for its own agenda with an American surrogate, Turkey, causing trouble for US rivals such as Russia and China with pan-Turkism and pan-Islamism.

We Muslims will never accept neo-Ottomanism and this is another failed American project.

Neo-Ottomanism is only legitimate in the Balkans where Turkey can protect the endangered Muslim minorities there and in fact many of the Turkish elite were white Muslims from the Balkans anyway with Albanians and Bosnians dominating the Ottoman premiership (Vezir i Azam).

Bernard Lewis, suspected by some as being one of the true masterminds behind the American-backed Erdogan regime and the "neo-Ottoman" project.

Erdogan and neo-Ottomanism. Erdogan in his super-expensive presidential palace with Turks in costumes representing ancient Turkic empires.

                  A parody of this event.

                  Another piece of satire.

13-year-old questioned over allegedly insulting president on Facebook

A 7th grader was taken out of class by police and made to give testimony to the public prosecutor over a Facebook comment last year insulting the Turkish president.

13-year-old questioned over allegedly insulting president on Facebook

A thirteen year old boy has joined the swelling ranks of citizens in trouble over comments insulting Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, with over 80 citizens having been questioned, detained or arrested over the crime in the past three months.

The incident occurred on Friday in the northwestern town of Ayvalık, part of Balıkesir province. The father of the student, identified only as İ.E., received a call by the Juvenile Crimes Bureau of the Ayvalık Police Department that his son, U.R.E., was to be questioned by the public prosecutor over having insulted President Erdoğan.

The father met with police at the school, and accompanied his son to the Ayvalık State Hospital to get a psychiatric assessment for the student before proceeding to the courthouse with a police escort. The student was questioned at the prosecutor’s office before releasing the boy on condition he get a psychiatric report from the Balıkesir State Hospital Child Psychiatry Service.

Whether or not the boy will be brought to trial is conditional on the outcome of the report.

The father later explained the incident on Facebook, stating that he did not know what comment his son had made that was considered offensive to President Erdoğan but that it was posted on May 5th, 2014 and picked up by the Gaziantep Police Department, in the southern city of Gaziantep, and reported to the Ayvalık Public Prosecutor’s Office.

“Instead of wasting their time on such insignificant incidents like this,” wrote the father, “our police and prosecutors should be pursuing those who have brought the country to the brink of civil war, those who are robbing the country blind.”

Two administrations, one in the capital and Thinni's in the east, have been vying for power since an armed group called Libya Dawn seized Tripoli in July and reinstated lawmakers from a previous assembly, four years after Muammar Gaddafi's ousting.

"Turkey is a state that is not dealing honestly with us. It's exporting weapons to us so the Libyan people kill each other," he told Egyptian TV channel CBC late on Thursday.

A spokesman for Turkey's foreign ministry strongly denied Thinni's allegations.

"Instead of repeating the same baseless and untrue allegations we advise them to support U.N. efforts for political dialogue," spokesman Tanju Bilgiç told Reuters.

"Our policy vis-a-vis Libya is very clear. We are against any external intervention in Libya and we fully support the ongoing political dialogue process under U.N. mediation."

Thinni's government said this week it would exclude companies from future deals, accusing Ankara of backing the Tripoli government and its allied armed groups.

He repeated that Turkish firms would be excluded from contracts in territory controlled by his government in the CBC interview, noting that any outstanding bills would be paid.

"We don't say we are hostile to Turkey but we say we don't deal with it," he said.

Turkey is one of a handful of countries which has publicly received officials from the Tripoli government and parliament.

Critics of Ankara say its Libya policy is an extension of a pro-Islamist agenda which has already seen relations sour with other former regional allies, notably Egypt.

Thinni also accused Qatar of giving "material" support to the rival side in the Libyan conflict. He did not elaborate.

Army general Khalifa Haftar, who merged his forces with the army in the east to fight Islamist militants, is seen as a potential rival to Thinni. While the alliance between the groups has enabled them to win back territory, Haftar has been criticised for air strikes on civilian airports and seaports.

On Wednesday, a spokesman for Thinni's parliament said the assembly's president would appoint Haftar as top army commander.

                              - Turkey has lost billions in Libya due to the policies of "neo-Ottoman" meglamaniac, Erdogan.

                              - Turkey has also incurred the anger of these Muslim countries who have applied sanctions or other measures.

                              - Turkey's exports have declined, the lira is at its lowest in history and if (I said "if" not "when") the Turkish economy goes in to crisis then the Turks may learn that no one in the Muslim world is interested in "Neo-Ottomanism" or Turkish dominance.
