Poultry and eggs:Industries that abuse chickens.

Chickens are inquisitive, intelligent animals who, according to animal behaviorist Dr. Chris Evans of Australia’s Macquarie University, “are good at solving problems.” He explains that chickens are able to undersdand that recently hidden objects still exist, a concept that small children are unable to master. Discussing chickens’ capabilities, he says, “As a trick at conferences, I sometimes list these attributes, without mentioning chickens, and people think I’m talking about monkeys.”

In nature, chickens form friendships and social hierarchies, recognize one another and develop a pecking order, love and care for their young, and enjoy dust-bathing, making nests, and roosting in trees. Chickens raised for meat and eggs are unable to engage in any of these activities.

    Chickens Raised for Meat

Approximately 9 billion chickens are raised and killed for meat each year in the U.S.(2) The industry refers to these chickens as “broilers” and raises them in huge, ammonia-filled, windowless sheds where artificial lighting is manipulated to make birds eat as often as possible.(3)

To keep up with demand and reduce production costs, genetic selection and a steady dose of growth-promoting drugs are used to ensure large, fast-growing birds. Today, most chicks take only six to seven weeks to reach “processing” weight, and chickens raised for meat weigh an average of one-fifth more than those raised in the 1950s.(4) The shift in consumer habits—from eating whole chickens to chicken parts—has encouraged the industry to raise birds with “thicker breast[s], fatter wings and chubbier drumsticks,” according to the Associated Press.(5) Skeletal problems, especially in the legs, are common among these birds, and many die from ascites, a disease thought to be caused by the inability of birds’ hearts and lungs to keep up with their rapid skeletal growth. According to one study, “[T]he bird’s demand for oxygen exceeds its cardiopulmonary capacity.”(6,7)

    Chickens Raised for Their Eggs

About 285 million hens are raised for eggs in the U.S., and most spend their lives in battery cages, stacked tier upon tier in huge warehouses.(8,9) Millions of day-old male chicks are killed (usually in a high-speed grinder called a “macerator”) every year because they are worthless to the egg industry.(10)* The wire mesh of the cages rubs off their feathers, chafes their skin, and causes their feet to become crippled.

Broken bones are also common among these birds, who “suffer significant osteoporosis,” according to the International Veterinary Information Service.(11) A study published in Poultry Science explained that “high production hens’ structural bone is mobilized throughout the laying period in order to contribute to the formation of eggshell.”(12)

Although chickens can live for more than a decade, hens raised for their eggs are exhausted, and their egg production begins to wane when they are about 2 years old.(13,14) When this happens, they are slaughtered. More than 100 million “spent” hens are killed in slaughterhouses every year.(15)

    Slaughter

The lives of chickens raised for meat and eggs end with a grueling trip to the slaughterhouse. Before the terrifying journey, chickens are caught by workers and placed into crates. One reporter at a Delmarva chicken farm described the “catching” process as “a half-dozen men … grabbing [chickens] by their feet, shoving them into the drawers of 6-foot-high crates. The men can catch more than 6,000 birds in an hour.”(16) One industry study of catching practices concluded that “[t]he number of freshly broken bones found in live birds prior to slaughter and the number of old healed breaks found at slaughter are unacceptably high.”(17)

Once at the slaughterhouse, the birds are dumped from their crates and hung upside down in shackles, further injuring their legs, which are already tender and often broken. Their throats are cut open by machines, and they are immersed in scalding-hot water for feather removal. They are often conscious throughout the entire process. Because hens’ bones are so brittle from egg production that the electric current would cause them to shatter, hens often are not even stunned before their throats are cut.(18)

Antibiotics Lead to Drug-Resistant Bacteria, Human Illnesses

Factory farms simply cannot raise billions of animals per year without using drugs that allow the animals to survive cramped, filthy, and stressful conditions that would otherwise kill them. Millions of pounds of antibiotics are fed to chickens, who metabolize only about 20 percent of the drugs fed to them: The remaining 80 percent ends up in their feces.(19) The 3 trillion pounds of waste produced by factory-farmed animals every year is usually used to fertilize crops and subsequently ends up leaching into waterways—along with the drugs and bacteria that it contains.(20)

Environmental and human health problems are developing as a result of this unchecked use of antibiotics. A U.S. geological study found 14 antibiotics used in animal agriculture and human medicine in almost 50 percent of the waterways tested.(21)

Arsenic-laced additives are mixed into the feed of about 70 percent of the chickens raised for food, but chickens do not eliminate all of it in their waste.(22) Legal battles continue on behalf of more than 100 plaintiffs in an Arkansas town with the second-largest chicken population in the U.S. Residents there have been diagnosed with arsenic poisoning that has led to blood diseases and extremely rare types of cancer.(23) The defendants are poultry producers who have been using an antibiotic (specifically, inorganic arsenic) in chicken feed that becomes toxic in litter, which was spread on nearby crops as fertilizer.(24)

One scientist examined poultry workers’ health and found that more than 40 percent of the test subjects were infected with campylobacter and that the bacteria was “supersized” and resistant to antibiotics. She remarked, “There have been a lot of stupid things we’ve done as a species … but this (giving animals antibiotics) has to be one of the most stupid.”(25)

Food-related illnesses affect more than 76 million people annually and kill more than 5,000.(26)*Consumer Reports*found that two-thirds of chickens studied were infected with either salmonella or campylobacter or both.(27) Eggs pose a salmonella threat to approximately one out of every 50 people each year in some parts of the U.S.(28)

In addition to their toxic effects on the human body, meat, eggs, and dairy foods contain large amounts of harmful substances such as cholesterol and saturated fats. For example, one large egg contains more than 200 milligrams of cholesterol, and chicken contains the same amount of cholesterol as beef.(29,30,31)

    What You Can Do

The best thing that you can do for chickens is to stop eating them and spread the word to your friends about the health, environmental, and animal welfare problems caused by raising chickens for food. Eat tofu scrambler instead of scrambled eggs, try egg replacer in your baked goods, and marinate tofu at your next barbecue.

Support legislation that ends the use of cruel confinement systems: Californians voted to ban battery cages as of 2015.(32) The European Union will have phased them out by 2012.(33) You can also support legislation that encourages the poultry industry to use controlled atmosphere killing (birds are gently “put to sleep” in a chamber where oxygen is slowly replaced by inert gases) instead of the current cruel slaughter methods.

      Is Islamic slaughter cruel?

The question of how an animal should be slaughtered to avoid cruelty is a different one. It is true that when the blood flows from the throat of an animal it looks violent, but just because meat is now bought neatly and hygienically packaged on supermarket shelves does not mean the animal didn’t have to die? Non-Islamic slaughter methods dictate that the animal should be rendered unconscious before slaughter. This is usually achieved by stunning or electrocution. Is it less painful to shoot a bolt into a sheep’s brain or to ring a chicken’s neck than to slit its throat? To watch the procedure does not objectively tell us what the animal feels.

      The scientific facts

A team at the university of Hannover in Germany examined these claims through the use of EEG and ECG records during slaughter. Several electrodes were surgically implanted at various points of the skull of all the animals used in the experiment and they were then allowed to recover for several weeks. Some of the animals were subsequently slaughtered the halal way by making a swift, deep incision with a sharp knife on the neck, cutting the jugular veins and carotid arteries of both sides together with the trachea and esophagus but leaving the spinal cord intact. The remainder were stunned before slaughter using a captive bolt pistol method as is customary in Western slaughterhouses. The EEG and ECG recordings allowed to monitor the condition of the brain and heart throughout.

      The Halal method

With the halal method of slaughter, there was not change in the EEG graph for the first three seconds after the incision was made, indicating that the animal did not feel any pain from the cut itself. This is not surprising. Often, if we cut ourselves with a sharp implement, we do not notice until some time later. The following three seconds were characterised by a condition of deep sleep-like unconciousness brought about by the draining of large quantities of blood from the body. Thereafter the EEG recorded a zero reading, indicating no pain at all, yet at that time the heart was still beating and the body convulsing vigorously as a reflex reaction of the spinal cord. It is this phase which is most unpleasant to onlookers who are falsely convinced that the animal suffers whilst its brain does actually no longer record any sensual messages.

      The Western method

Using the Western method, the animals were apparently unconscious after stunning, and this method of dispatch would appear to be much more peaceful for the onlooker. However, the EEG readings indicated severe pain immediately after stunning. Whereas in the first example, the animal ceases to feel pain due to the brain starvation of blood and oxygen – a brain death, to put it in laymen’s terms – the second example first causes a stoppage of the heart whilst the animal still feels pain. However, there are no unsightly convulsions, which not only means that there is more blood retention in the meat, but also that this method lends itself much more conveniently to the efficiency demands of modern mass slaughter procedures. It is so much easier to dispatch an animal on the conveyor belt, if it does not move.

      Appearances can deceive

Not all is what it seems, then. Those who want to outlaw Islamic slaughter, arguing for a humane method of killing animals for food, are actually more concerned about the feelings of people than those of the animals on whose behalf they appear to speak. The stunning method makes mass butchery easier and looks more palatable for the consumer who can deceive himself that the animal did not feel any pain when he goes to buy his cleanly wrapped parcel of meat from the supermarket. Islamic slaughter, on the other hand, does not try to deny that meat consumption means that animals have to die, but is designed to ensure that their loss of life is achieved with a minimum amount of pain.

      The holistic view

Islam is a balanced way of life. For Muslims, the privilege of supplementing their diet with animal protein implies a duty to animal welfare, both during the rearing of the animal and during the slaughter. Modern Western farming and slaughter, on the other hand, aims at the mass consumer market and treats the animal as a commodity. Just as battery hens are easier for large-scale egg production, Western slaughter methods are easier for the meat industry, but they do neither the animal nor the end consumer any favours. The Islamic way guarantees a healthier life for the animal and a healthier meat for the consumer.

Why Is The Food Industry Poisoning Us With Trillions of Nanoparticles?

The U.S. food industry is notorious for poisoning the very consumers who drive their multi-billion dollar enterprise, even spending millions against their right to informed consent (truthful GMO labeling). So, is it any wonder that this deregulated and increasingly deranged juggernaut is experimenting on its own customer base by exposing them to trillions of toxic nanoparticles?

A new study published in*Biomedicine and Pharmacotherapy*titled, "Effects of titanium dioxide nanoparticles in human gastric epithelial cells in vitro," reveals for the first time that the nanoparticle form of the common "whitening" agent known as titanium dioxide is capable of inducing "tumor-like" changes in exposed human cells.[1]

Whereas previous cell research has established that titanium dioxide (TiO2) is cytotoxic (cell damaging),[2]*this is the first study of its kind to find exposed cells undergo a 'phenotypal' transition from normal to cancerous cell traits, including an increased rate of cell proliferation and a decrease in programmed cell death – hallmark features of precancerous and/or cancerous cells associated with 'immortalization.'

Owing to the fact that the researchers tested human gastric epithelial cells, a type of stomach cell in direct contact with material we eat, and considering the broad range of drug, personal care and food products nanoparticle TiO2*is commonly used within, the toxicological implications of these findings are deeply concerning.

Once throat is cut...gushing of blood itself causes less blood supply to brain that leads to unconsciousness of animal. With unconsciousness they feel less pain...

"The animal is not to be harshly restrained, nor hoisted up by chains, nor is the animal to see the knife. Skillful slaughter brings about a quick and relatively painless death. According to studies of the correctly preformed Halal method of slaughter,*the animal registers little pain and died quickly, the but heart continues to pump blood out of the body, which purifies the meat from potential disease."(Vincent J. Cornell - Voices of Islam: Voices of Life: Family, Home, and Society - Volume 3 - Greenwood Publishing Group, 2007 - Page 16).

Moreover, an academic named Professor Schultz and his colleague: Dr. Hazim scientifically & objectively proved the Zabiha method to be superior over all other methods:

"Professor Schultz of Hanover University, Germany, performed a comparative experiment between methods of slaughter. He compared modern "captive bolt gun" (CBG) stunning method to the Islamic method, using electrodes to record the electrical brain activity of the animals. With the Islamic method,*the graph showed that the animal felt no pain at the point of the incision or for the following moments. A reflex of the spinal cord caused the body to convulse vigorously, which*completely drained it of all blood. The graph showed*zero level of pain during the entire process, and*the end result was clean and hygienic meat*for the consumer.

On the other hand, the*stunning method rendered the animal unconscious for a second, which was immediately followed by severe pain. The stunning caused the animal's heart to stop sooner than that of the halal method. The result was that*a lot of blood was retained inside the body - unhygienic meat for the consumer and a lot of pain for the animal."*(Duaa Anwar - The Everything Koran Book - Everything Books, 2004 - Page 101).

                          CRUELTY IN THE CHICKEN INDUSTRY:

The following article in the 2014 issue of*POULTRY PRESS (U.S.A.),*throws considerable light on the haraam filth and disease which* the haraam ‘halaal’ certificate outfits of Iblees halaalize. There is no wonder for the sharp increase of grave diseases such as cancer, heart problems and a host of other incurable maladies caused by the gluttonous consumption of diseased carrion chickens, diseased poisoned broiler chicken eggs and* the deluge of* processed foods laced with poisons* camouflaged with chemical epithets and e-numbers.

“CONTAMINATION AND CRUELTY IN THE CHICKEN INDUSTRY

                          By K. Davis PhD

The National Chicken Council, which represents the U.S. chicken industry, has released its 2014 update of the NCC Animal Welfare Guidelines for the humane treatment of the nine billion chickens raised for meat each year in the United States. Rather than advancing animal welfare, these guidelines, first formulated in 1999, outline industry practices that are neither healthy nor humane.

For example, the guidelines allow a concentration of atmospheric ammonia in the chicken sheds as high as*25 parts per million, even though 20 ppm of this toxic gas burns the eyes, skin, and respiratory tracts of the chickens and weakens their immune systems by being absorbed into their bloodstream. Afflicted birds rub their heads and eyelids against their wings trying to ease the pain. The skin on their stomachs and legs ulcerates in the ammoniated manure they sit in, and respiratory illnesses are chronic and ubiquitous.

The ammonia arising from the decomposing uric acid in the manure harms not only chickens but poultry workers, who experience eye, lung, and nasal irritation, headaches, nausea, wheezing, coughing, phlegm and other respiratory symptoms, as ammonia absorbs easily into the mucous membranes of both birds and mammals.

Adding to the ammonia, the NCC Guidelines recommend lighting in the chicken houses amounting to virtual darkness. The purpose of the dim lighting is to limit the birds’ movements to getting up only to eat, drink and sit down again in order to accelerate weight gain. Once again, chickens and workers suffer the effects. Former North Carolina poultry farmer, Mary Clouse, told me, “The dim light bothers farmers who are accustomed to working out of doors in bright sunlight, and it also seems unnatural to raise any living animal in the dark all the time. It is difficult to see the birds, and sudden light or a flashlight frightens them into piling up, causing injuries and suffocation.”

By the time the chickens are five weeks old, their weight has multiplied many times over and they sit on their crippled legs, 20,000 or more birds crammed on the manure-soaked floor of a 500—foot-long shed, alongside five or more identical sheds, breathing air that is thick with pollutants and pathogens. To a person standing in the doorway of one of these sheds — as I have often done on the Eastern Shore of Virginia, Maryland and Delaware, where at any given time a half a billion chickens are confined — they look like lumps of dough laid out in the gloom. Their only value to the chicken industry is as raw material for processing into final products.

These products are pathogenic. Periodically, Consumer Reports publishes the results of tests they run on raw chicken. In 1998, CR found harmful bacteria, chiefly Salmonella and Campylobacter, on 71 percent of store-bought chicken, including “free—range” and “premium” brands. They Warned that the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s seal of approval “is no guarantee of cleanliness.”

In 2007, Consumer Reports announced tests on 525 chickens purchased from U.S. supermarkets and specialty stores in 23 states. Eighty-four percent were contaminated with*Campylobacter*and*Salmonella*bacteria. What was more, 84 percent of the*Salmonella*and 67 percent of the*Campylobacter*bacteria showed resistance to antibiotics including “multiple classes of drugs.”

And now? In The High Cost of Cheap Chicken in Consumer Reports, February 2014, we learn that 97 percent of 300 chicken breasts purchased by CR investigators in stores across the country, including organic brands, contained dangerous bacteria. More than half were contaminated with feces and about half tested positive for antibiotic—resistant bacteria. The article recaps the 2013 Foster Farms outbreak of Salmonella Heidelberg noting that this outbreak put about twice as many people in the hospital as usual. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s most recent data show more deaths attributable to poultry than to any other food product.

As far back as 1987, U.S. Department of Agriculture official William H. Dubbert told a poultry symposium at Colorado State University: “We know more about controlling salmonella than we are willing to implement because of the cost factor.” In 2007, an article in the trade publication WATT Poultry USA observed, “We all know that pathogens of all forms, such as bacteria, fungi, and viruses, are everywhere in the animal production environment and will remain, regardless of techniques adopted.”

Industry’s “stopgap” response to the squalid poultry production environment and microbial density that squalor generates is to bathe the birds, after slaughter, in a wash of chlorine and other toxic chemicals, including the extremely dangerous chemical, peracetic acid. A Report in The Wasl1ington Post in April 2013 explained how fewer federal inspectors, other government cost-cutting measures and faster line speeds have all conspired to boost the use of toxic chemical sprays and soaks to kill the bacteria in chicken — with no guarantee of success.

Things are set to worsen as the global scale and speed of production increases. But here is a constant:

Pack living creatures into filthy sunless places, feed them the lowest of “feed-grade” ingredients — a primary source of Salmonella, avian influenza and other diseases in poultry — subject them to multiple simultaneous stressors that Nature never intended for them to have to cope with even singly, and sickness of body and spirit will follow. There are laws of Nature, and we are violating these laws in our mistreatment of chickens with predictable results. The poultry industry is not likely to clean up its act, but we can wash our hands of the mess, and eat nourishing meals that are chicken-free.” *********** *********** ************(End of article)

                          COMMENT BY THE MAJLIS

The position is no different in South Africa and all over the world where chickens are artificially (unnaturally) churned out, unnaturally and cruelly reared and brutally killed and halaalized by the agents of Iblees whose lust for money has spawned the industry of* carrion-halaalization.

It is noteworthy that even the non-Muslim writer states in the last paragraph of this article:*“Nature never intended for them to have to cope with even singly, and sickness of body and spirit will follow There are laws of Nature, and we are* violating these laws in our mistreatment of chickens with predictable results.”

According to the Shariah (the Ahaadith of Rasulullah – sallallahu alayhi wasallam), those who barter away their Deen for the dunya (for money and cheap name and fame) are in reality*PIGS. Let these vile, shaitaani halaalization outfits* study the Ahaadith and they will then not fail to discern that in reality they are*KHANAAZEER

And when it is said to them (hypocrites): "Believe as the people (followers of Muhammad Peace be upon him , Al-Ansar and Al-Muhajirun) have believed," they say: "Shall we believe as the fools have believed?" Verily, they are the fools, but they know not."(2.13)
