  • Iran hangs Reyhaneh Jabbari

Iran has executed a 26-year-old woman convicted for killing a man who she said tried to sexually abuse her.

Reyhaneh Jabbari was arrested in 2007 for the murder of Morteza Abdolali Sarbandi, a former employee of Iran’s Ministry of Intelligence.

She was hanged at dawn on Saturday, the official IRNA news agency quoted the Tehran prosecutor's office as saying.

A message posted on the homepage of a Facebook campaign that was set up to try to save her, but which now states "Rest in Peace," appeared to confirm the report.

Efforts for clemency had intensified in recent weeks. Jabbari's mother was allowed to visit her for one hour on Friday, Amnesty International said, a custom that tends to precede executions in Iran.

The shocking news that Reyhaneh Jabbari has been executed is deeply disappointing in the extreme. This is another bloody stain on Iran’s human rights record.

    Hassiba Hadj Sahraoui,
    Amnesty International,

Jabbari was sentenced to death by a criminal court in Tehran in 2009 in what Amnesty International said was a "deeply flawed investigation and trial".

Her execution was due to be carried out on September 30 but was postponed for 10 days.

"The shocking news that Reyhaneh Jabbari has been executed is deeply disappointing in the extreme. This is another bloody stain on Iran’s human rights record,” said Hassiba Hadj Sahraoui, Amnesty International’s Deputy Director for the Middle East and North Africa Programme.

"Tragically, this case is far from uncommon. Once again Iran has insisted on applying the death penalty despite serious concerns over the fairness of the trial."

A UN human rights monitor had said the killing of Sarbandi was an act of self-defence after he tried to sexually assault Jabbari, and that her trial in 2009 had been deeply flawed.

Iranian actors and other prominent figures had appealed for a stay of execution, echoing similar calls in the West.

Jabbari apparently admitted to stabbing Sarbandi in the back. She said he had tried to sexually assault her.

However, she said that another man who was also in the house at the time killed him. Her claims do not appear to have ever been properly investigated, Amnesty said.

    Calls for retrial

The UN and international rights groups had said Jabbari's confession was obtained under intense pressure and threats from Iranian prosecutors, and she should have had a retrial.

Ahmed Shaheed, the UN's human rights rapporteur on Iran, said in April that Sarbandi had offered to hire Jabbari to redesign his office and took her to an apartment where he sexually abused her.

However, Sarbandi's family insists that the murder was premeditated and that Jabbari had confessed to buying a knife two days before the killing.

Iran's judicial authorities were reported to have pressured Jabbari to replace her lawyer, Mohammad Ali Jedari Foroughi, for a more inexperienced one, in an apparent attempt to prevent an investigation of her claims, Amnesty reported.

Why we have to intervene in others' judicial matters and how much we know about the judicial proceedings sitting in canada and america.
secondly they are against the capital punishment and hanging.

in life, it's not necessarily required of one to understand or be in agreement of the judicial matters of other places in the world. it is, however, required of one to master the basic arts of common sense.
this article has mentioned the undesirability for the need of iran's capital punishment only once. the point that has been repeated is the unfairness of her trial and the possibility of her punishment being due to the fact that the murdered man who is accused of sexually assaulting a 26 year old woman in a country like iran was in fact, a government employee.

since you are unable to tell the difference between a 26 year old female who is a potential sexual assault victim from a 21th century dictator, i will kindly dismiss your ignorance as will as further comments you may have on the matter.

i don't for the life of me understand why a woman would want to be okay with going to an empty apartment with a stranger in a country like iran. specially when you are scared enough to be carrying a knife in your purse.
what do you do in that situation?? wait for someone to announce they are about to assault you and then excuse yourself to dig out your knife from your purse?? is he just going to stand there and watch??
i don't know if she killed him or not but she is guilty of something.

in other news, there are women in iran who have started wearing motorcycle masks on top of their burqas (or whatever those long dark cloaks are called) while cruising down the streets due to a fashionable trend of men walking around with acid in their hands to toss at the faces of random unveiled women.

                Many other examples are there.

both the west and iran did and continue to do some really terrible things. what i find interesting is the tendency of some individuals who not only tend to side up with one side but diverge attention from the fault of one by highlighting the faults of the other.
wrong is wrong whether in east or the west. why don't you that??

Capital punishment must be abolished everywhere in the world including in US.

Another issue is gender discrimination. If man would have killed a woman, this kind of justice would not have met out.

Per your saying Capital punishment must be abolished.
What if a six years old girl is raped by 30 years old men, which is not a rare case. What is the best remedy for her pain and honor ?
Secondly what about the terrorists who kill people just randomly ?

Please read this objectively and you will understand why death sentence should be abolished.

Majority of countries have abolished and others are going to abolish death sentences. Do you think they are stupids. I have heard that Pakistan has also abolished death sentence in practice.

In spite of capital punishments in Muslim or undeveloped countries, it never deterred murders. There are better alternatives. Here is a good discussion on this subject.

A breakdown of the arguments given in favour of abolishing (or against reintroducing) the death penalty.
