Anjem Choudary, one of the most high profile Islamists in Britain, has been arrested by police for allegedly encouraging terrorism.

Choudary, 47, was one of nine men arrested by officers from Scotland Yard’s counter-terrorism command on Thursday morning.

Police gave only sparse details, but the men were arrested on suspicion of being members of a proscribed organisation, supporting a proscribed organisation, as well as encouraging terrorism.

Choudary was a former spokesperson for the extremist or radical group al-Muhajiroun, which was banned and then reinvented itself under various names, which were also proscribed.

Choudary gained publicity for statements over the years which inflamed some people, but which stayed on the right side of the law.

He is a former lawyer, self styled preacher and says he is an expert in Islamic or Shariah law.

On Thursday morning his phone was uncharacteristically switched off and a chat group he uses to communicate his message through was silent and saying it was last viewed at 5.33am.

The men arrested were aged from 22 to 51 years old and were all detained in London.

Police said a total of 19 addresses were being searched, mostly in London. Police said community premises were being raided, as well as residential and business addresses. One address is in Stoke-on-Trent in the Midlands, eleven in east London, one in west London, one in north-west London and five in south London.

In a statement the Met said: “These arrests and searches are part of an ongoing investigation into Islamist related terrorism and are not in response to any immediate public safety risk.”

Choudary’s most recent group called itself “need4khilafah”. Choudary had previously acted as spokesperson for Omar Bakri Muhammad, the former leader of al-Muhajiroun, who left Britain to live in Lebanon.

Those arrested in Thursday’s raids are being held at police stations in the capital.

The Met said: “Officers from the Metropolitan police service’s counter-terrorism command have arrested nine men this morning, Thursday, 25 September, on suspicion of being a member of a proscribed organisation, supporting a proscribed organisation contrary to Section 11 and 12 of the Terrorism Act 2000 and encouraging terrorism contrary to Section 1 of the Terrorism Act 2006.”

There is a wide gap of grey area between white and black. It is no more a secret that the West creates extremists/enemies to fight them. Otherwise the wheel of capitalism shall grind to a halt. Neo-colonialism will disappear.

"Islamic" militants cause more damage to Muslims than anyone else.

ISIS are slaughtering Muslims in Iraq and Syria and leaving Israel alone, Jamaat e "Islami" are making Bangladesh weak and India stronger by getting Saudi Arabia and Turkey to carry out negative policies towards us thus benefitting India, the TTP are killing Pashtuns and leaving Punjab alone and so on.

No Muslim benefits from groups like ISIS, TTP or Boko Haram.

Russia and China are relatively safe because they have nuclear bombs so America can't attack them directly as well as having powerful intelligence agencies that can stop US-sponsored "Islamist" terrorism.

That is why these reports claiming ISIS/IS are CIA's creations appear true.

The west may help create these groups, but what about Saudi Wahabis? They have been creating these groups since decades. Saudi Arabia is single handly responsible for the current mess muslims are in. Last time I checked Saudi Arabia was a muslim country, not a western one. Stop blaming everything on them and look at your own horrible state first

Even Wahabi puritanism was guided into an extremist path by British Intel.

You are now implying that muslims and arabs are some brainless littel children who were brainwashed by the big bad west, West had its share in all of this, but they don't carry 100% blame in this, and muslims schould recognize this before our whole relligion is going to be hijacked by this monsters.

Yeah well even if that is true, it just shows how dumb muslims are and basically slaves. They are easily brainwashed by anyone

Lol, again why do muslims so easily become brainwashed and radical? care to address that. you can blame the west all you want, but until the day you realize your own weaknesses you will never fix yourself. You will always be a slave to others

Ask any Afghan, who they respect more Muhammad saw or Ahmed Shah Durrani.

They will go with the latter, rather than the former.

I am what you guys would call Wahabi and we are only purists. We stick to the simplicity in Islam. We don't worship graves or ancestors. We don't go to 'religious men' and and ask for favors. If we need something we will ask Allah swt directly. We don't follow Maulvis and Mullahs and consider them as the guiding beacon of our faith.

People in general have a very skewed viewpoint of Wahabis, and that is also due to the propaganda of western media outlets. We are just Muslim people that don't allow heretic thoughts in Islam. Many of you think Wahabis are people that go around beheading people. That is a very stupid assumption. Islam promotes peace.

                          Salaam.
