Sulaiman Abu GhaithThe highest-ranking al Qaeda figure who was facing trial on US soil since the September 11, 2001, terror attacks, was sentenced to life in prison on Tuesday.
Osama bin Laden’s son-in-law, Sulaiman Abu Ghaith was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Lewis A. Kaplan for acting as al Qaeda’s spokesman after the terror attacks.
Abu Ghaith became the voice of al Qaeda recruitment videos after the 2001 attacks. He was convicted in March of three counts, including conspiracy to kill Americans, providing material support to terrorists and conspiring to do so.
However, Abu Ghaith testified at trial that his role was strictly religious, claiming that his role was a religious one aimed at encouraging all Muslims to rise up against their oppressors.
But the videos showing Abu Ghaith threatening America with no end to the “storm of airplanes” were shown to jurors.
The Kuwaiti-born cleric is married to Bin Laden’s eldest daughter Fatima. He was flown to the United States a year ago from Jordan, where he was captured as he headed to Kuwait, which had revoked his citizenship after 9/11.
