Iran Leader Backs U.S. Contacts to Fight Islamic State, BBC Says
By Kambiz Foroohar 2014-09-05T12:16:29Z
Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has approved cooperating with the U.S. military against Islamic State militants, the BBC reported, citing people it didn’t identify.
Khamenei, who has the final say on all state matters in Iran, has authorized the country’s commanders to cooperate with the U.S. military against the Islamic State, according to the BBC.
U.S. airstrikes against the Sunni militants last month helped Iraqi government forces and Shiite militias break the siege of the Shiite-dominated town of Amirli. President Barack Obama said this month a video showing the beheading of a second American journalist by Islamic State underscores the need for a global alliance to confront the extremist group.
While Shiite-ruled Iran has traditionally opposed U.S. involvement in neighboring Iraq, Iranian officials have repeatedly said that they view Islamic State militants as a threat to regional security.
