  • Iranian is first woman to win 'Nobel Prize of maths'

SEOUL: An Iranian-born mathematician has become the first woman to win a prestigious Fields Medal, widely viewed as the Nobel Prize of mathematics.
Maryam Mirzakhani, a Harvard-educated mathematician and professor at Stanford University in California, was one of four winners announced by the International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) at its conference in Seoul on Wednesday.

“This is a great honour. I will be happy if it encourages young female scientists and mathematicians,” Mirzakhani said in a press release from Stanford University where she is a professor.

“I am sure there will be many more women winning this kind of award in coming years,” she added.

The award recognised Mirzakhani’s sophisticated and highly original contributions to the fields of geometry and dynamical systems, particularly in understanding the symmetry of curved surfaces such as spheres.

Although her work is considered “pure mathematics” and is mostly theoretical, it has implications for physics and quantum field theory, as well as for the study of prime numbers and cryptography.

“Fluent in a remarkably diverse range of mathematical techniques and disparate mathematical cultures, she embodies a rare combination of superb technical ability, bold ambition, far-reaching vision, and deep curiosity,” the ICM said in a statement.

Mirzakhani was born in Tehran in 1977 and earned her PhD in 2004 from Harvard University.

She has previously won the 2009 Blumenthal Award for the Advancement of Research in Pure Mathematics and the 2013 Satter Prize of the American Mathematical Society.

The Fields Medal is given out every four years, often to multiple winners who should not be aged over 40.

The other three winners this year were Artur Avila of France, Manjul Bhargava of Princeton University in New Jersey, and Martin Hairer of the University of Warwick in Britain.

With no Nobel Prize awarded for mathematics, the Fields Medal is seen as the top global award for the discipline.

The medals were presented by South Korea’s first woman president, Park Geun-Hye.

“I congratulate all the winners, with special applause for Maryam Mirzakhani, whose drive and passion have made her the first woman to win a Fields Medal,” Park said.

Before Wednesday’s ceremony all 52 previous recipients had been men.
Born and raised in Tehran, Mirzakhani initially dreamed of becoming a writer, but by the time she started high school her affinity for solving mathematical problems and working on proofs had shifted her sights.

“It is fun,it’s like solving a puzzle or connecting the dots in a detective case,” she said. “I felt that this was something I could do, and I wanted to pursue this path.”

Although it usually involves abstract concepts of nature that might not have an immediately obvious application, Mirzakhani said she enjoyed pure mathematics because of the elegance and longevity of the questions she studies.

“It is like being lost in a jungle and trying to use all the knowledge that you can gather to come up with some new tricks, and with some luck you might find a way out,” she said.

Mirzakhani became known on the international mathematics scene as a teenager, winning gold medals at both the 1994 and 1995 International Math Olympiads — finishing with a perfect score in the latter competition.
In 2008 she became a professor of mathematics at Stanford, where she lives with her husband and three-year-old daughter.

“On behalf of the entire Stanford community, I congratulate Maryam on this incredible recognition, the highest honour in her discipline, the first ever granted to a woman,” said university president John Hennessy.

If this Maryam would have been stuck in Iran , she would be just cleansing plates or serving her husband but this is US who made her the way she got such a big prize.

Although Iran is still far better for women, I do not think a Pashtun woman will win such a prize in coming 200 years if Mullahs continue to control our society!

I found out about her a year ago: it turns out she was also the first Iranian ever to attain a perfect score on the International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO). I was hoping shed bag in an Abel prize or something but this was a pleasant surprise, here is an achievement worth taking pride in: we Persians produced the first woman Fields medalist in history.

Iranians and Indians have been a smart bunch of people for 5000 years. Good for her

How the heck did Persians, Indians or any other racially/ethnically groups contributed to her, in winning this prize...

To be more precise, I am referring to ''we persians''. As if you in anyway contributed to this achievement. She probably have no idea of your existence.

You remind me of an Afghan joke:
A worm went amongst snakes. They were going somewhere, so the worm followed. The worm wondered where they were going, so all of sudden the worm said ''where are we snakes going''.

Basically inferior people tend to associate themselves with people of greater achievement, so they tend to find something in common with them. 'the girl is persian and I am persian, so that makes me great'. Same goes for any other associations, whether they are racially, ethnically, linguistically or even nationally.
Basically it is typical behavior of an inferior/low life person. Who themselves have no achievement, so they try to brag with what other people have achieved.
Don't quote me or speak to me if you hate Afghanistan, you be ignored.

People with identity crisis will be ignored as well.

I always see clarity in your thoughts but then why we Pashtuns are proud of our Khushal Khan and Sher Shah Suri when we are not Khushal Khan and Sher Shah ourselves?

This is natural that you feel pride and association with great people of your ethnicity or country. I think Herat has total right to feel good for the achievement of some one who belongs to his language or race. If she were Pashtuns all of us would be beating our chests today.

Oh whats the matter, you Pashtuns take much more pride in the achievements of your historical individuals (e.g. Ahmad Shah Abdali who I do admit is an admirable historical figure) than we do but now we aren't allowed?

And hardly my friend, you know, I am certain that I am the first "Afghan", I don't consider myself an Afghan (Pashtun) but I am an individual who was born in that country, to become a member of Mensa, and compete in the first round of the British Mathematical Olympiads (tough I failed to pass to the second round lol). Sadly, I won't be the first "Afghan" to read medicine at the university of Cambridge, a Hazara already beat me to it.
Britain plans to deport 100 Afghani child asylum seekers every year. But behind the bald figures are real people such as Mohammad Razai, whose astounding journey from Kabul to Cambridge is a tale of triumph over overwhelming odds, writes Kate Kellaway

For purposes of humility, I won't brag anymore about the achievements I take pride in. The first "Afghan" to accomplish a few humble things is a Tajik who doesn't give a rats fart about "Afghanistan", heheheheeee, what a shame huh?

There is difference on being happy on other peoples behave/feel proud of someone who fought a cause that benefit oneself, and taking credit for other peoples achievement.

In this case, Herat is trying to take credit for what she have achieved.

I have no problems with people who are proud of someone, I myself is even happy on her behave, but I certainly do find people who take credits for what others have achieved, extremely disgusting to say the least.

The problem isn't being proud of someone, but low life people tend to take credits for other peoples achievement. Something you seems to enjoy. And by the way, Tajiks are no more related to 'Persians' than Pashtuns.

Be my guest and brag. But be sure to show prove. Anyone can throw random sentence in a forum and expect people to believe.

I am the first Afghan to do that, I even passed to second round.

                  You see my point...

How exactly did I "take credit" for her achievement huh? I said we Persians, and yes we are an ethnic group just as the English in England, America, Canada, New Zealand and Australia, the Germans in Germany and Austria, or the Kurds (including the non-Muslim ethnic Kurdish Yezidi people) in the various parts of the Middle East, are a single ethnic group -the rest of the world doesn't work the way the Pashtun tribal system does does my friend, the Persian/Tajik distinction is about as meaningful as the Pathan/Pashtun/Afghan distinction is-, have managed to produce this individual. I associated her accomplishment to my ethnic group, not to myself personally, and even that in all honesty is not genuine. In reality, as far as Im concerned, most of my fellow ethnic Persians are Muslim religious morons (tough I still deem them my people). And no worries, I don't care whether you believe me or not.

We are Persians/Tajiks and have never been, are not and never will be Afghans. That fact will remain no matter how much you try to divide us. Funny thing is, whenever I see this issue broached in this forum, you Pashtuns insist that we are not "ethnic Afghans" but merely "Afghan nationals" and yet when we call for our right to self-determination and therefore the partition of your failed colonial-legacy state of Afghanistan, we are "Iranian agents" and against "Pan-Afghan unity".

I don't even see how your post relates to my comment or even is relevant to 'Pasthun tribal system', even more importantly how it is different lol.

You associated her with yourself and literally took credit for her achievement, regardless what system you use German, English etc or whatever you preached. ''We persians produced''. The Afghan joke that I posted earlier, is literally made for people like you.

Just to clarify your nonsense. You do not represent Tajiks or any other ethnic group. They have already 'self-determined' as you put it, to be Afghans. I have many Tajiks in my family and even more friends. I have literally never seen anyone disclaiming of being Afghans.
Persians literally pisses on your graves and calls you wannabe persians. As far what real persians are concerned, people in Afghanistan are all Afghans(monocultural-society).

You're literally suffering from inferiority complex. People who don't believe me, can look it up and see the description of inferiority complex. I repeat, it literally describes you.

If you're really that determined for your partition cause, then have some ghairat and go to Afghanistan and fight for it. You don't even need to fight for it, just live in Afghanistan and I will agree with everything you say. People like you disgust me. Living in the west, yet preach nonsense regarding Afghanistan.

Hehehe desperate motivated reasoning is desperate. You said Tajiks are not related to Persians, did you not? Well answer this question then: what is the relationship between the Kurds of Turkey with the Kurds of Iraq; are the Yezidi people not ethnic Kurds? The Ashkenazi Jews take much pride in their astounding capacity for producing Science Nobel laureates (over 20% of all winners have been Ashkenazi Jews) and Fields medalists (over 20% of all medalists have also been Ashkenazi Jews). Those Jews who bring up this fact as a source of ethnic pride, tell me are they "taking credit" for others works?

Don't worry, I am not a hypocrite. Hopefully the ethnic civil war will not start until at least 5 years from now on so I can finish medical school here and I too, like many of the western Kurds (check out some of their comments regarding joining the battle-field in Iraq for Kurdistan at rudaw), will join the war alongside my ethnic brethren, as a physician. Also, I have said it before here and I will say it once more: if I make it to middle-age along with your failed colonial-legacy state of Afghanistan, I will be joining the political arena there as a separatist.

Are you always so stupid or is today a special occasion? I already explained the difference on being proud of something and taking credits. Whether your brain can comprehend it or not, is not my business.
Kurds are separated by an artificial border. Tajiks and Persians are separated by genes and culture. The only thing that you guys have in common with Persians is the language(even that is very different).

One can even say that Tajiks isn't even a real ethnicity. Many of them have different background.
I will repeat again, Tajiks are no more Persian than Pashtuns or even Hazara.

Also, I have said it before here and I will say it once more: if I make it to middle-age along with your failed colonial-legacy state of Afghanistan, I will be joining the political arena there as a separatist.
Do you have anything that we can identify you with. If you true to your word, then a politician or active separatist wouldn't have a problem with people knowing their identity. Unless, you of course is lying and is all words and no action.
Don't quote me or speak to me if you hate Afghanistan, you be ignored.

People with identity crisis will be ignored as well.
