India, Pakistan troops exchange fire on Kashmir LoC
SRINAGAR, Indian-controlled Kashmir, June 27 (Xinhua) -- The troops of India and Pakistan posted on line-of-control (LoC) in Kashmir Friday violated cease-fire and resorted to firing on each other's positions, officials said.
The cease-fire violation occurred early Friday in Bimber Gali ( BG) area of frontier Poonch district, around 185 km southwest of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.
"Pakistani army early today resorted to unprovoked firing on our positions in BG sector of Poonch using small arms and automatics," Lt. Col Manish Mehta, Indian army spokesman in Jammu said. "Our men posted there gave a befitting reply to Pakistani troops using similar calibre weapons."
The firing continued for more than one hour.
"The firing started at 12:35 a.m. and continued until 1:30 a.m., " Mehta said. "We have not suffered any damage due to Pakistani firing."
Indian Defense Minister Arun Jaitley during his visit to the region this month said Indian troops were capable of tackling cease-fire violations on LoC.
In December last year directors general of Military Operations (DGMO) of two countries met for talks held at Wagah-Attari border and pledged to uphold 2003 cease-fire agreement on the LoC, besides agreeing to work out a mechanism to ensure peace and ease tensions.
Last year deadly skirmishes took place between Indian and Pakistani troops posted on 720-km-long LoC and 198-km International Border (IB) in Kashmir. Both sides have suffered troop as well as civilian casualties during the standoff.
Indian army said around 200 cease-fire violations were recorded on LoC and IB in Kashmir last year.
Both New Delhi and Islamabad blamed each other for violating cease-fire.
New Delhi and Islamabad in 2003 agreed to observe cease-fire along IB and LoC in Kashmir. Though some violations have been reported on both sides, the cease-fire remains in effect.
LoC is de facto border that divides Kashmir into Indian and Pakistan controlled parts.
Kashmir, the Himalayan region divided between India and Pakistan is claimed by both in full. Since their Independence from British, the two countries have fought three wars, two exclusively over Kashmir.

Post-US withdrawal, it seems that India under Modi's rule is taking a military approach towards Pakistan.

Raheel Sharif's doctrine focuses entirely on 'internal security' and sees the threat presented only by the insurgency against Pakistan, and external threat from Afghanistan, instead of India. His intention was to relay that Pak military would continue to support the US/NATO war in Afghanistan.
    .
The doctrine banked on an assumption that the US would remain in Afghanistan for 10 more years, and hence, Pakistan would keep giving NATO supply line. This doctrine was published before Obama decided on a full US withdrawal from Afghanistan.

This will continue so till the problem of LOC is not solved. The Modi govt will be more than willing to give up Pakistani kashmir claim if Pakistan agree to consider it a international Border as done under the last BJP/NDA govt with Vajpaye PM.

Only considering LOC as interntional border will add up 84k Squarekm of area to Pakistan total area which is bigger than countries like UAE and more than half of Bangladesh.

Modi earlier was believed to be anti Pak,But it seems like this is the only govt out of india from decades to still continue with talks after the last week Pakistan score of killing a indian soldier on border

Modi to take stock of security in J&K on July 4

        Srinagar, June 28, 2014, DHNS:
On his maiden visit to Jammu and Kashmir after taking over as Prime Minister, Narendra Modi is scheduled to review the security situation in the state with top security officers upon his arrival on July 4.

Sources told Deccan Herald that senior officers, including Northern Army command chief Lt Gen D S Hooda, would brief the prime minister about the security situation in the state and along India’s borders with Pakistan and China.

“Jammu and Kashmir Governor N N Vohra and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah would also brief the prime minister, who would have a luncheon meeting with Vohra,” they said.

“Modi is also scheduled to discuss with senior Army and intelligence officers the recent purported threats from al-Qaeda to extend its base to the Valley, fresh spurt of militant attacks in Pakistan, militants’s ceasefire violations and infiltration attempts through the LoC and International Border,” they added. I dont know about Modi's stance against Pakistan, but he is defiantly anti muslim. his party believes in equaling the muslim/hindu population in Kashmir, even though 90% of Kashmir is muslim
