I can't read the Pashto discussion here, but
I LIKE what HinduPashtun said earlier in English.
It strikes a chord of truth.

There is SO MUCH PROPAGANDA which Western-educated Afghans fall for!
This man is telling the exact situation with backup of his own experience with his land.

He has no vested interests whatsoever.

The fact is that the Taliban are REASONABLE in many ways, where Western influence in a country inevitably leads to money-grubbing and epidemic corruption.
What's worse, being asked to go in a separate taxi, big deal, or having a more secure life for an entire family and entire regions of the country?
I could say a lot more, and will later. I think HinduPashtun sounds like a good guy for speaking out to give unpopular truth.

Re Shlombey's "Have you ever met Taliban commanders Catya Sher? They are humble Pashtuns that just want to see Afghanistan free from infidels" - I had signed out or I would have replied right away.

Yes, I agree ! I meant the PBS program's interviewer's frightening ambiance. Not the Taliban commander who was a very likeable type.
Of course, like the Omar in the film there will be crooks or twisted people infiltrating the Taliban-type groups. So exceptions obviously will always exist. However, as a general statement, I see them that way too, with a special quality of purity in the mix of their characteristics as well.

I haven't been back to Afghanistan to meet any in this era.
If you count Jelaluddin Haqqani as a Taliban -- which may not be 100% accurate -- yes, I spoke with him on a number of occasions. Even in the middle of battles with the Soviets, we were all hiding out in a cave right on the battlefield with bombs dropping even on the roof of the cave.
Jelaluddin had thoughtfully invited me there to interview a Russian officer he had captured. There were several other Maulavis in his council present. With my escort of Mujahideen, we all had lunch, ironically.

So yes, I have seen them with a front row seat in heavy military situations.
I also interviewed Jelaluddin before and after at other battles or markazes.

He never changed; he was always the same kindly and completely sincere person. That was remarkable considering his exponentially growing fame.

I feel reasonably sure he would be the same unassuming type today that he was then. Very, very humble, due to a powerful and complete trust in God.

About his son Siraj I can't say anything at all. One can see that his profile looks like his father from the video interview some months back.
