Headscarfed Muslim woman to run for Greece in EP polls

Anna Stamou, a former yoga teacher and now an activist politician, seeks to ensure equality for Muslims in her country.

    World Bulletin / News Desk

A Muslim, headscarfed Greek woman is running for a seat for her country at the European Parliament, with an eye on preventing any discrimination against Muslims and to ensure equality for Greek Muslims.
Anna Stamou is significant in that she is the first headscarfed nominee in the European Parliament (EP) elections on May 25 and will be the first such MP if elected.
Stamou, wife to an Egyptian husband, describes herself as an active woman, not only in dealing with regional issues but also making efforts for the "big picture."
"I have been nominated from the Eco Green Party Greece - the ecological political party that is a member of the European Green party - as it perfectly reflects my opinions," Stamou tells Anadolu Agency in an exclusive interview.
The basic principles of the Ecologists Greens, as determined by their constitutions are: sustainability, social justice, non-violence, direct and participatory democracy, respect for diversity, decentralization and subsidiarity, protect and restore natural ecosystems, the quality of life, personal and social responsibility and equity and anti-austerity.
Stamou says she was born an Orthodox Christian but "found the answers to her questions" in Islam after delving for years into all religions. A graduate of business management and once a yoga trainer, Stamou states that she is leading a Muslim life since she embraced Islam at aged 30.
She now opts for politics after her "activist" years along with being a teacher.
"What drew me to politics is my objective of guaranteeing a life for Muslims in Greece with equal rights to those of other Greek citizens through all means," she says.
She is responsible for the public relations at the Muslim Association of Greece and is wife of the head of the Muslim Association also.
Stamou also speaks on her ideal to ensure that Greek Muslims become citizens who are able to both fulfil their responsibilities towards their country and claim their rights in equal measure.
"My message to the Greek Muslims is to actively participate in the EP voting process and enjoy their rights to elect and be elected without the fear of their voice falling on deaf ears."
She pointed out the fact that she is the first headscarfed nominee for an EP seat, who argues against any discrimination of people by their appearance.
Stamou asserted that some may take the headscarf as a "threat" but every citizen should do something for their country.
"I will exert all my efforts for ensuring that Muslims do not consider themselves as a minority in Greece. If I get elected for the EP, I will fight for equal right for Muslims and the prevention of discrimination against Muslims," she said.
Another goal of Stamou is to work for the construction of a mosque in Athens - the sole European capital without a mosque. Efforts to this end have been delayed for years for an "unknown reason" she claims.
Greek candidates will stand for 21 seats in the European Parliament during the European Election on 25 May, coinciding with the local elections in the country. The number of seats allocated to Greece declined from 22 to 21, as a result of the 2013 reapportionment of seats in the EP.
In the 2009 elections, the Ecologist Greens of Greece won only one seat at the EP after receiving 3.49 percent of the votes.

Europeans/westerners have already done things far worse e.g. the decimation of Muslims in the Philippines, forced conversion and extermination of Muslims in Spain (where majority of Muslims were not Arabs but indigenous converts just like Bosnians or Kosovars), and many other areas.

In the past few years they have invaded Iraq and Afghanistan, and have de facto nuked Iraq. Rather than a single concentrated nuclear strike it has been a dispersed nuclear strike with depleted uranium all through out the country.

Europeans also went to south Africa where they ruled as a white minority.

They went to South America and exterminated the natives in areas like Argentina.

They went to north America and exterminated the natives.

They went to Australia and exterminated the natives.

They went to the middle east and displaced the Palestinians and created a European-dominated state called "Israel" (where white Europeans are the ruling elite).

They went to Malaysia and brought in massive amounts of Indians and Chinese to the point that the native Malays felt endangered in their own country.

There are nearly 1.50 mlln Greek Muslims in a national population of about 11 mlln. All Sunnis. There have been many Greek Muslims who rose to prominence under the Turkish Caliphs. Some of the famous Caliphs themselves had been sons of Greek queens.

          1. When the Turks went to Turkey and the Balkans, they conquered parts of Thrace, Bulgaria and Greece before they conquered most of Anatolia.

This area, Thrace, Bulgaria, Greece and towards the east of Istanbul was called "Rumelia" and was the heart of the Ottoman Empire.

          2. The Ottomans conquered Rumelia, Greece and Anatolia and many of the local indigenous white Europeans there converted to Islam. By becoming Muslim they by default became "Osmanli", and thus "Turk".

          3. It is said that the majority of the descendants of the ancient Greeks in both the Greek peninsula and Anatolia are now actually Muslim Turks (having converted).

          4. It is also said that one of the reasons that unlike other European countries there is no indigenous Greek nobility stretching back a millenia is that the Greek elite essentially converted to Islam en masse during the Ottoman conquest. Though Greek told me not all of the nobility converted.

          5. This lady above is:

a: Not calling for the restriction of anybody's rights but for the protection of a particular community i.e. Muslims.

b: She is part of a party led by non-Muslims with a non-Muslim ideology, Ecologists Green. So there is no need for alarm.

Kosovo elects first lawmaker to wear a headscarf

              World Bulletin/News Desk

Labinote Demi-Murtezi, who won enough votes in the elections, became Kosovo's first headscarved lawmaker to enter the parliament.
Murtezi collected the most votes among the female candidates. She needed 5,000 votes to take a seat as a lawmaker and by the end of the elections over 6,000 votes were given to her.

Before the elections, the Prime Minster of Kosovo Hashim Thaci had given his word to remove the headscarf ban in schools. Agani, who is the leader of the Justice Party, during the election campaigns also constantly talked about how no one can restrict students who wear the headscarf from studying.

To all members, please ignore secularist trolls who post off-topic personal attacks against members.

The most effective response for such trolls such as the one above who insult members personally is to place them on ignore as in the absence of any meaningful contribution to a thread they resort to personal insults in the hope that the member attacked will fall for the bait, insult them back and thus a flame war can ensue.

                    Thank you for your co-operation.

I have placed the troll above on ignore, however I am sick and tired of these personal attacks and insults from the likes of the secularist troll above.

                      1. This is the world news forum, so we can post articles not related to Pashtun affairs here, as there is no other place to put them.

                      2. Pashtuns are Muslim and many members here live in the west, so this news is of relevance as it highlights one aspect of the interaction between Islam and the west and of Muslims living in the west.

                      3. For those who are not interested they can simply chose to ignore rather than carry out personal attacks against active members who contribute to the site. Without articles and threads being started the site would be dead.

The more articles, threads posted here, the more active the site (unless it is of course nonsensical threads, but this is a very relevant thread as the relationship between Islam and the west is very much one which affects us all especially Muslims living in the west).

Those who are trying to discourage active members from posting are actually harming the site, note the troll above only has a few posts one of them which includes a personal attack on another PF member, Karachi.

Anyway some say the troll above is just one account of a multi-login troll.

However the point is I am sick and tired of people who do nothing for the forum attack active members, who can simply choose to walk away and the site would be far less active.

Let's just discuss things here without personal insults.
