China conducts mine-sweeping training for Afghans

Press Trust of India | Beijing April 28, 2014 Last Updated at 20:50 IST

China today started training Afghanistan's civil and military personnel in mine-sweeping operations aimed at building trust between the two countries.

International humanitarian mine-sweeping communication and training for Afghanistan, started in Xuzhou, Jiangsu Province, state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

Nineteen Afghan trainees from military and civil mine-sweeping organisations will be trained as a part of trust building measures under the Istanbul Process on Afghanistan.

After training, participants will play an active role in sweeping mines and promoting post-war reconstruction in Afghanistan, one of the most mine-affected countries in the world.

China has held mine-sweeping technology training for Afghanistan and donated mine-sweeping devices in 2009 and 2010.

    1. Out of all of Afghanistan's neighbours, the biggest in size, population, military is China.

    2. Afghanistan has no border with any other superpower (major nuclear giant) be it Russia, the USA or India.

However if Pakistani-Occupied Kashmir were to be taken back under Indian control (highly unlikely, though if Pakistan breaks up we would have to see whether Kashmiris would want to stay with Punjab, be independent or be re-incorporated in to India) then Afghanistan would have a border with India. In fact official Indian maps would show Afghanistan and India as neighbouring each other.

    3. China wants to see a secure and stable Afghanistan and not one which will be host to radical "Islamists" and Uighur separatists.

China's 2 million strong army will not allow American-backed Uighur separatists to go too far.
