'Made in Bangladesh': American Apparel releases controversial new ad starring topless former-Muslim model

American Apparel has sparked controversy once again with a new ad starring a topless former-Muslim model from Bangladesh.
The bold image, which appears in Vice magazine's U.S. and Canada editions, stars 22-year-old Maks, a merchandiser for American Apparel, who was born in Dhaka but has lived in California since the age of four.
The words 'Made in Bangladesh' are printed across her chest - referring to the woman, of course, not her jeans, a means of raising awareness about American Apparel's fair labor practices - all its clothing is made in downtown LA.
Courting controversy: American Apparel's latest ad, pictured, stars 'Maks', a Bangladesh-born, former Muslim. She lives in LA and works for the brand as a merchandiser

The powerful image is accompanied by a description of Maks, revealing how she was raised a strict Muslim but 'distanced herself' from her Islamic faith as she grew up, in search of her 'own identity.'
The words explain that the bare-chested beauty 'doesn't feel the need to identify herself as an American or a Bengali and is not content to fit her life into anyone else's conventional narrative.

The striking ad is likely to cause some upset among traditional Muslims for linking a half naked model to a country where Islam is the dominant religion and nudity is frowned upon.

American Apparel, which was established in Canada in 1989, has a long history of sparking both celebration and outrage for its daring campaigns.
Recent activity includes a campaign featuring a 62-year-old model in lingerie and a New York based Valentine's stunt in which their window-front mannequins were given fake pubic hair.
It has been repeatedly blasted for pushing the boundaries, degrading women and even sexualising young girls in its famously provocative campaigns.
Too much: Last year, an American Apparel campaign became the latest in a series of its ads to be banned in the UK for using 'overly sexualised' images +3

Last year, a series of 'gratuitous' ads were banned by the UK's Advertising Standards Authority for using 'overtly sexual images' of women who appear to be wearing no underwear.
The ASA said: 'Although we considered it was reasonable for ads for hosiery to feature women in limited clothing, we considered the images and the model's poses gratuitous.'
It's too early to tell what sort of reactions the latest ad will draw, but chances are this won't be the last we hear of it.

I won't show the photo but it is filthy.

I wonder why people like Aswad71 and Bengali_Tigress won't correct their own people but feel compelled to intrude on everyone else woes.

The reading age of a UK tabloid is about 7 and whilst the Daily Mail is not the worst of its crop, it is still pretty lousy. That piece of junk is exactly what it thrives on.

The woman herself can go rot just like Osama Bin Laden's niece etc. If you've already got no shame, then what difference does a camera make, right? I'm inclined to differentiate between desperate women who need to eat and desperate women who need attention. That's all I need to say about that.

As for the article, RTR. Do you go looking for things like that or are you really concerned about what Bangladeshis might be feeling right now?

The news story showed up in my feed. If you think people need to look for such stories ...then you're either being deliberately obtuse or you live an extremely ...and I stress the word extremely sheltered life. And I don't mean that as an insult. I wish I could be THAT naive too.

Thanks for the sheltered life comment. No, the truth is these attention grabbing people bore me. If I was pressed I know that I could name about half a dozen like her. The thing is all this is superfluous to my life and I think that I have better things to think about than a Bangladeshi girl who undresses infront of a camera.Bangladesh doesn't appear on the spectrum of concern for most Pashtuns. Rant over. I do see from your post that what you wanted to do was to get a reaction out of some other members.Go ahead.

well you were trying to insinuate that one must actually put an earnest effort to look for this stuff to find it. I wanted to stress that isn't the case.

The real point of this thread was to juxtapose the persistent propgandizing of our Bengali members who seem driven to influence others with their agenda. That perhaps if they see this will spend more time trying to remedy their own cultural decline rather than trying to meddle with the issues of others.

RTR you're a pathetic person. Right now you have shamed yourself far more than that girl.

If you've been here awhile you'll see how annoying this Bengali Tiger guy and his cohort Asad71 is. They persistently try to chaploos and "woo" Afghans/Pashtuns on this forum in some hopes that Afghans will look to Bangladesh and Bengalis as some cultural/social refuge.

This article is more a demonstration of the real state of people from their country and why I wish they'd fix their own problems than being invested in ours.

"Muslim" Brotherhood was banned by Saudi a day or two ago. I posted the news so RevolutionThroughStupidity (an Ikhwani/Brotherhood supporter) is probably angry and wants revenge.

I wouldn't dignify this B.S. troll thread with a response because RevolutionThroughStupidity thrives on spreading conflict, flame wars, insults etc but you seem to be a nice person so just mentioning this, otherwise I wouldn't even post on this thread.

RevolutionThroughStupidity is on my ignore anyway.

Ikhwan Al Muslimeen were banned from Saudi Arabia years ago. Not sure why I'd be mad about a post regarding something people have known for years. The point of this thread was to highlight why These Afghan obsessed Bengali allow their own culture to degrade but seem so fixated on trying to push their anti-islamic attitude on us.

That's not saying much coming from you, in your belief system, selling your daughter into sexual slavery against her will through forced marriages and molesting little boys for entertainment is deemed "honorable". So I'm sure what you consider shameful/pathetic holds no water.
