  • Marshal Fahim dies

KABUL (Pajhwok): First-Vice president Field Marshal Mohammad Qasim Fahim died Sunday of natural causes, a presidential spokesman said.
Aimal Faizi wrote on tweet "with deep sadness, the first vice president, Marshal Mohammad Qasim Fahim has passed away. May his soul rest in peace.”
He said the government of Afghanistan has called for a three-day national mourning, during which the national flag will be half-hoisted for his demise.
President Karzai has expressed his deep grief and condolences to the nation and his family.
Karzai called Fahim a true patriot and said his death was "a huge loss for Afghanistan."
Fahim, an ally of Ahmad Shah Massoud, the charismatic Northern Alliance commander, had also served as defense minister in Karzai's first administration.
Fahim fought against the Soviets and went on to battle against the Taliban before they were ousted in 2001.
The son of Maulvi Abdul Matin, Fahim was born in the Amraz area of central Panjsher province in 1958.
After completing his primary education in hometown, he was admitted to an Arabic Darul-ul-Uloom for Islamic studies in Kabul.
After the 1979 coup against former President Sardar Mohammad Daud Khan, he migrated to Pakistan and returned in 1980 to launch an armed struggle in the Shigal district of eastern Kunar province.
The following year in summer, he entered Panjsher valley and joined Ahmad Shah Massoud forces as the commander of the Mujahideen in the northern sector. He mobilised Mujahedeen in Panjsher and other parts of the country.
Fahim was Mujahedeen commander in the Andarab district of northern Baghlan province.
He had a significant role in mobilising Mujahedeen and used to travel to northeastern Baghlan, Takhar and Kunduz provinces in this regard.
In 1988, as a mujahideen commander in north of Kabul, he gained more ground against the Soviet army, advancing to Faryab, Jawzjan and Balkh provinces in 1990 and expanding and creating further solidarity among Shura-i-Nezar forces.
After Dr. Najibullah regime collapsed in 1993, Fahim entered Kabul leading Mujahedeen forces and was appointed head of the KHAD under interim president Sibghatullah Muhaddedi.
He continued to serve as the head of intelligence under president Burhanuddin Rabbani, even when the Taliban took the power over most provinces in the second half of the 90s.
After the assassination of Ahmad Shah Massoud in 2001, two days ahead of the 9/11 attacks, Fahim was confirmed the leader of Mujahideen resistance forces until Kabul was reclaimed with support from international troops in 2001.
Fahim was appointed as defence minister well as one of the five vice-chairmen after the new government was inaugurated in December, 2002.
In 2003, President Karzai confirmed Fahim would hold for life the rank of Marshal, Afghanistan's highest with all rights and privileges for his proactive role in the country’s independence.
After the emergency Loya Jirga, he was elected as first-vice president and minister of defence and was also honoured with the Ahmad Shah Baba Medal.
Marshal Fahim, who had survived many assassination attempts, was fluent in Dari, Pashtu and Arabic, but did not speak English. He left behind twelve children.

Even Adobe Photoshop can't change me.

A line[Durrand line] of hatred that raised a wall between the two brothers -Hamid Karzai

For generations, the Hindus of India prayed for deliverance from "the venom of the cobra, the teeth of the tiger and the vengeance of the Afghan."

The men of Kábul and Khilj also went home; and whenever they were questioned about the Musulmáns of the Kohistán (the mountains), and how matters stood there, they said, "Don't call it Kohistán, but Afghánistán; for there is nothing there but Afgháns and disturbances." Thus it is clear that for this reason the people of the country call their home in their own language Afghánistán, and themselves Afgháns. The people of India call them Patán; but the reason for this is not known. But it occurs to me, that when, under the rule of Muhammadan sovereigns, Musulmáns first came to the city of Patná, and dwelt there, the people of India (for that reason) called them Patáns—but God knows!

        I read it was diabetes.

All the corrupted wealth he amassed was all for not.
There are people today who think that admitting God’s absolute greatness decreases the value and importance of humans in the creation, as if God and mankind are rivals competing in greatness and power. Meanwhile I feel that whenever our perception of God’s greatness increases, with it we become greater, because we are the creation of a great God.

KABUL: Afghanistan’s powerful Vice Pesident, Marshal Mohammad Qasim Fahim, died of natural causes on Sunday, only weeks before the country is due to elect a new leader. He was 57.
Formerly one of the country’s most feared warlords, Fahim had been a top commander in the Northern Alliance, a group of anti-Taleban militia leaders, after the 1992-96 civil war.
President Hamid Karzai called Fahim a true patriot and said his death was “a huge loss for Afghanistan.” He also expressed his condolences to the Afghan nation and Fahim’s family.
The United Nations mission in Afghanistan called Fahim “a good and trusted partner of the UN.” Back in 2009, UN officials and diplomats had criticized Fahim’s appointment because he was accused of serious human rights abuses. It was unclear what, if any, role Fahim had planned for next month’s presidential election.
Fahim served as a influential but brutal intelligence officer under iconic rebel commander Ahmad Shah Massoud, fighting against the Soviet occupation in 1980s and against the Taleban’s 1996-2001 regime.
Fahim died from complications caused by diabetes and heart problems, according to officials who declined to be named.
His death is likely to have limited impact on the April 5 election to choose a successor to Karzai, who is constitutionally barred from standing for a third term in office.
Fahim, a leader of the Tajik ethnic minority, was senior vice-president under President Hamid Karzai, who will step down at elections next month as US-led combat forces pull out of Afghanistan after 13 years of fighting the Taleban.
Aged 56, Fahim was accused of being a ruthless strongman who maintained his own militia forces, but he also received American support as Afghanistan struggled for stability following the fall of the Taleban regime in 2001.
Three days of national mourning will begin on Monday, with the national flag flown at half-mast across the country.
Fahim served as an influential but brutal intelligence officer under iconic rebel commander Ahmad Shah Massoud, fighting against the Soviet occupation in 1980s and against the Taleban’s 1996-2001 regime.
Massoud was killed by an Al-Qaeda bomb two days before the 9/11 attacks in the United States in 2001.
The Taleban were then ousted in a US-led operation for sheltering Al-Qaeda, and Fahim emerged as a leading figure in Afghan politics during the international military and civilian intervention that is now winding now.
With strong backing from Washington, Fahim was appointed to the key position of defence minister in 2002, where he was criticised for appointing mainly Tajik senior officers and failing to build a representative national army.
He also served as a vice-president from 2002-2004, but was removed by Karzai from both jobs in 2004 in one of the many power struggles that have undermined efforts to develop the war-torn and impoverished country.
Fahim returned as senior vice-president in the 2009 election as Karzai sought to broaden his support base in a policy that was widely seen as appeasing some of most violent men in Afghanistan.
At the time, the Human Watch Rights group described Fahim as “one of the most notorious warlords in the country, with the blood of many Afghans on his hands.”
The Essential Field Guide to Afghanistan released this year said he was accused of being “a semi-literate, self-appointed field marshal, and one of the principal obstacles to Afghan unity because of his alleged ruthless threats, beatings and general thuggery.”
Among the front-runners is Abdullah Abdullah, another former close aide of the late rebel commander Massoud.
“With extreme sorrow, Marshal Mohammad Qasim Fahim, the first vice-president of Afghanistan, passed away due to an illness,” the palace said in a statement.
It said that President Karzai expressed his deep condolences over the “uncompensable loss” of “a patriot and a great mujahid.”
