A band of 24 Afghan girls, for the sheer love of their cricket team, travelled from Chittagong to create an ‘Afghan Zone’ that cheered their team against Bangladesh in their Asia Cup match at the Khan Shaheb Osman Ali Stadium yesterday.
Asian University for Women in Chittagong currently has 47 Afghan women studying there and all of them were present in the stadium. While these women are empowering themselves with leadership skills in the educational sector in the port city it was their first experience of supporting the Afghan cricket team with the green, black and red flag.
“It’s the first time we are watching Afghanistan cricket team on the field and it’s a great moment for us,” said Shekofa, a student of political science at AUW. “We don’t have much sporting activities in Afghanistan and we feel proud to wave the national colour in the stadium,” she added.
They were waving their flags, cheering when Ashghar Stanikzai and Samiullah Shenwari hit a boundary and shouted “Afghanistan Zindabad.” Rabia, another student said the cricket team has provided them the opportunity to cheer and follow the sports circuit.
“Afghanistan cricket team had been performing superbly in the international circuit now, we follow the team’s performance and firmly believe that Afghanistan will reach higher level of the game in the near future,” said Rabia.
Rabia said they will follow the team in the upcoming T20 World Cup with more enthusiasm. “It would be big occasion when Afghanistan plays in the T20 World Cup, the cricket team is working hard for the success and definitely the image of the country to the world, we hope Afghanistan continue the success. We love our cricket team and hope they beat Bangladesh today,” said Rabia.
Cricket is making its mark in the war ridden country as Afghan coach Kabir Khan said they need a win or two in the top level and it will shape the next ten years of Afghan cricket. By putting 254/6 on the board Afghanistan definitely showed their prowess against hosts Bangladesh.
