Saudi Arabia Man Sentenced to 100 Lashes for Sending Racist text

A man in Saudi Arabia has been sentenced to receive 100 lashes after he was found guilty of sending a racist text message.

The court in the Makkak region handed down the sentence after the defendant reportedly insulted a man from another tribe via text message, reports Gulf news.

The verdict is the first racism-related decision to be handed down in a Saudi court. The man has 30 days to appeal the sentence.

The issue of racism in the Gulf country has been highlighted recently following the case involving a female pilot dubbed the "Rosa Parks of Saudi Arabia".

Nawal Al Hawsawi dropped the case against three women who are alleged to have called her an 'Abda' (female slave), a derogatory term used to describe black people in the region.

Following huge media interest in the case, Al Hawsawi, a human rights activist, eventually dropped the case after the women involved in the allegations apologised.

If someone calls you 'abd in 'Oman you can sue that person for a big settlement but the sad thing is that some people misuse this. For example if a Black person and a Arab have a fight the Black person may provoke the Arab to call him 'abd in front of people so then he can sue him after.

Zingi are from Zanzibar so yes they are originally East African (Swahili) and most are also mixed with Arabs.

1. Omanis are the nicest Arabs I have met from the gulf.

2. Someone (a non-Arab) who lived in the gulf told me Omanis consider themselves culturally and civilizationally superior to the nouveau riche Bedouin of the UAE, whom they have some border disputes with.

3. Omanis are totally different to the rest of the peninsula in many ways including their distinctive dress, and I think the fact that they are historically richer and a far older civilization than the other gulf Arabs is evident in their behaviour.

4. There are a lot of Baloch in Oman too and I heard in the past, Baloch could gain free entry to Oman due to deep historical ties between the two e.g. Gwadar was part of Oman until they gave it to Pakistan unfortunately.


I totally agree with you, Omanis seem to be far less racist and much nicer people than the other gulf Arabs!

Yes, many Omanis do not like Emaratis because of their attitude and fakeness but some people from Al Buraimi which is the border area between UAE and 'Oman have inferiority complex so they always try to copy Emaratis and they don't like to associate with 'Oman but they don't realize that Emaratis laugh at them. These people consider driving an Omani registered car an insult so they even register their cars with UAE number plates and dress like Emaratis.

Many people from Gwadar came here got citizenship and many still come, my grandfather on father's side was one of them. It was the same with Zanzibar, many of them came here and still continue to come.

We cannot say that all 'Omanis are not racist because there are racists in every country but we do not have discrimination at government level like in Sa'udi or UAE where non-Arabs cannot become citizens. We even have Indian Hindus who have got citizenship and same with Christian Filipinos. 'Omanis in general are not racist but they are proud of their own country.

1. You are close to the sea.

2. At a crossroads of different regions and cultures e.g. east Africa, India, Arabia, Persia etc.

3. Have had a history of empire.

I am no expert on Oman but I doubt you (Omanis) are "bedouin" or at least not the same type of "bedouin" as the Najdis, Emiratis and others.

I am no expert on Oman but I doubt you (Omanis) are "bedouin" or at least not the same type of "bedouin" as the Najdis, Emiratis and others.

I also agree that it is because of the sea, Oman has a long sailing tradition.

We also are more mixed than UAE and other countires which are almost completely Arab whereas we have three main cultures and many more local cultures which are distinct. For example, there are more than 12 native Omani langauges.

We do have Bedouins but they are not favored like in other countries, they mostly live near Sa'udi border.

In my opinion Omanis are not poor people in general but they still work hard for example if you visit any supermarket, there will be an Omani woman as cashier and all taxi drivers are Omani, unlike any other Gulf country where you can never find an Arab working in these positions.
