    Ansar Burney’s house attacked

KARACHI : Unidentified armed men on late Friday night opened fire outside the residence of renowned social worker Ansar Burney, in North Nazimabad area.
The incident took place at the Burney’s house situated at Block-F in North Nazimabad in the night between Friday and Saturday. Burney said he was not at home when the incident occurred. Police and rangers reached the site and also found four empty shells of 32 bore revolver. Further investigation was underway.

    Ansar Burney

He recently tweeted against human rights violations in Karachi.

Ansar Burney Trust International is very much concern about 11,000 people missing after arrest during last 3 months operation in Karachi
I don't know what percentage of those 11,000 have been killed.

If it is half, that means more than 5,000 Pakistanis have been killed by mainly Punjabi security forces in the past 12 weeks.

Ansar Burney is a well-known and respected campaigner for oppressed people in many different causes. This attack on his house (most likely by Punjabi security forces) is unacceptable and outrageous.

Ansar Burney was a prominent student leader with the People’s Student Federation in his youth during the 1970s and was known to raise his voice for justice, human dignity and civil rights. His efforts and movement landed him in trouble with the military government of the time and in 1977, Ansar Burney, then aged 20, was arrested on charges of delivering speeches against martial law and in favour of democracy; and was sentenced to eight months rigorous imprisonment by the Martial Law Court.Upon release in 1978, the Martial Law Authorities once again arrested Ansar Burney and sentenced him to prison for 2 further months of detention and in 1979, Burney was again arrested for a third time and detained for a month.

During the periods of his detention in different prisons in Pakistan, Ansar Burney witnessed firsthand the miserable conditions of prisons and met countless prisoners whom were imprisoned without crime or charge; some in detention for over 40 years without ever appearing in court.
It was then upon his release and completion of his law degree that Ansar Burney set up the ‘Prisoners Aid Society’ and the ‘Bureau of Missing and Kidnapped Children’ in Karachi (Pakistan in 1980; and eventually formed the Ansar Burney Trust International with offices in Karachi, Islamabad, Peshawar, Mirpur, Quetta, Washington D.C. and London.

The Ansar Burney Trust is a non-governmental, non-political and non-profitable organisation which initially worked for the welfare of prisoners, reforms in prisons and mental asylums and to trace missing and kidnapped children; however then widened its scope to cover all areas of human rights and worked against human trafficking.

Burney offers shelter to Hindu rape victim's family in Pak

Yudhvir Rana, TNN Jan 21, 2014, 02.46AM IST

human right activist Ansar Burney|Hindu rape victim|Hindu girl in Pakistan

AMRITSAR: After the rape and murder of a minor Hindu girl in Pakistan, human right activist Ansar Burney's trust has offered shelter to hapless parents and relatives of the victim.

"Trust volunteers visited the girl's village on Monday and met her parents. They are inconsolable and scared and have not got any cooperation from the police," Burney told TOI over phone from Karachi. Giving details of the incident, Burney informed that an 8-year-old daughter of Kora Ram Menghwal, of Basti Kata Mauza, Ghani Chak 8-P, Khanpur, about 62km from Rahim Yar Khan, went missing on January 16. "The girl's parents tried to find her at every possible place, but were shocked to find her body near a sugarcane field on January 17," he informed.

He informed the entire Hindu community of the area was perturbed over the incident. "We have offered shelter not only to Hindus but also to Sikhs and Muslims, who are scared of similar attacks by extremist elements, and have advised them to contact our trust so that we can take up their issues at international level and generate pressure on the government to provide them sufficient security," said Burney, who runs Ansar Burney Trust International.

Expressing surprise over the lackadaisical attitude of authorities, Burney said after police took the body of the young girl to a hospital in Khanpur, a female doctor refused to perform autopsy. "It was only after our intervention that her autopsy could be conducted," said Burney.

Referring to the autopsy reports, Burney said according to doctors it appeared that the girl died while being raped, adding that the police had registered a case against some unidentified persons. "It is not enough. We have to expose the culprits and punish them accordingly. If government fails to do so, we will begin an international campaign to bring justice to the victim and her aggrieved family," he said.

KARACHI: Ansar Burney Trust’s Human Rights Award 2013 is being conferred upon Dr Aamir Liaquat Hussain recognizing his efforts and to encourage others to do the same, says a press release.

Dr Aamir Liaquat Hussain is a renowned scholar, TV personality and a record-breaking TV host. Ansar Burney Trust has always acknowledge human rights activists who stand up for positive causes that bring social benefits to masses. Adoption is a stigmatized the issue due to wrong interpretation of religion and other taboos.

Every year thousands of babies born out of wedlock are discarded, killed, given up to trash or left outside doors in the cold and heat unprotected.

Dr Aamir’s efforts to highlight the issue during the most popular TV series in Pakistan’s electronic media history, Geo’s Iman Ramazan transmission, has helped bring a positive change in the way people look at adoption. It is reported by various third-arty NGOs and government officials that some trends indicate that formal adoptions are on the rise and lesser babies are being found in the trash since last year. However, a lot more needs to be done to highlight the severity of the issue.

Right activists seek death probe of an Indian fishermen in Karachi jail

              right activists|Kishore Bhagwan|Karachi jail|Indian fishermen|Ansar Burney

AMRITSAR : Death of an Indian prisoner in Karachi jail on Tuesday has triggered a debate among right activists on the safety of Indian prisoners lodged in various Pakistani jails and a demand to generate international pressure on Pakistan government to provide adequate security to them.

According to reports Indian fishermen identified as Kishore Bhagwan was found dead in Karachi's Landhi Jail.

"This is yet another unexplained death of an Indian national in Pakistan. The cause and circumstances of Bhagwan's death must be investigated immediately" said UK based right activist Jas Uppal while talking to TOI over phone from London.

She said that Pakistani authorities must be forced to account and confirm as to what safeguards and procedures they had in place to ensure the protection of Indian prisoners. She also suggested creating a pressure group to force Pakistan government to ensure safety of foreigner prisoners.

According to reports the cause of Bhagwan's death was yet to be ascertained. Another Indian fisherman Bhikha another Lakha Shiyali had also died in the jail in December 2013 whose body was yet with Pakistan.

Jas questioned "Why has the Red Cross denied access to these prisoners and what has the Indian government done to ensure consular access and legal advice to these prisoners"?

In May 2013, Indian prisoner Sarabjt Singh was murder in Pakistani custody by fellow jail inmates following which the Pakistani authorities ordered a judicial inquiry by Justice Syed Mazahar Ali Akbar Naqvi of the High Court of Lahore.
"I made submissions which were acknowledged by the Registrar to the Tribunal and I was invited to attend the inquiry. Despite repeated requests and almost year on, the Inquiry into Sarabjit Singh's murder has yet to be scheduled." She said.

While seeking probe into the death of Bhagwan in jail, right activist Ansar Burney said "It is unfortunate that an Indian prisoner who was in protection of Pakistan jail authorities had died under mysterious circumstances". He said the government should conduct a time bound probe to ascertain cause of death and if some foul play was found, the guilty must be booked said Burney.

              * Pakistanis are violent people and will kill even fellow Pakistanis for being Shia, Qadiania or the wrong type of Sunni e.g. Barelvi. People are killed in mosques in Pakistan.

So for an Indian Hindu to be left in a jail full of Pakistanis who are brought upon a diet of anti-India/anti-Hindu hatred (the same type of hatred Pakistan seeks to export to Bangladesh via its proxy, "Jamaat e Islami" - just read defence.pk's "Bangladesh" section to see how much hatred the "Bangladeshi" Jamaatis have for Indians, Hindus and Bangladeshis in general e.g. even today a "Bangladeshi" Jamaati was cursing Bangladeshi soldiers who died recently) is like leaving a Jew in a prison full of Nazis.

Ansar Burney is one of the few good public figures in Pakistan alongside the likes of Maulana Edhi and others.

Five sailors return home after being released by India

                Thursday, February 13, 2014
                From Print Edition

                Karachi

Five Pakistani crew members of the MV Meem, which had been stranded in the Bhavnagar port of Indian Gujarat since last year, reached their homeland on Wednesday, as intensive campaigning by the Ansar Burney Trust International finally bore fruit.

Burney, the former federal minister for human rights, had been actively pursuing the case since the ship’s seizure in early 2013 and it was over his petition that the Gujrat High Court had initially directed the Bhavnagar district collector to provide food, water and medical supplies to the ship’s crew.

The bench, which comprised of Chief Justice Bhaskar Bhattacharya and Justice JB Pardiwala, had also called for a report on the crew’s condition. In the petition, Burney had condemned the seizure of the boat on the Gujrat High Court’s orders and appealed for the provision of essentials on humanitarian grounds.

During proceedings, the state prosecutor Prakash Jani had claimed that the vessel was detained at sea over payment issues and only after the high court issued an order in that regard.

In a statement issued by the trust, Burney thanked President Mamnoon Hussain, the foreign ministry, Gujrat High Court and the Indian High Commission in Islamabad for their support in making possible the Pakistani crewmembers’ release and return home.

*Before Pakistani extremists and racists on this forum and others swear at Ansar Burney and curse him Burney is responsible for rescuing and free Pakistani citizens from Indian jails.

Yet again another great figure from Karachi is the victim of a major crime, this time perhaps the greatest Pakistani of all time (Jinnah is overrated and the Pakistani national narrative needs a father figure to occupy a central role in the narrative which is thus allocated to the British-trained lawyer, Ali Jinnah), Maulana Edhi.

Pakistan charity boss Abdul Sattar Edhi 'heartbroken' after robbery

One of Pakistan's top charity leaders has told the BBC he is heartbroken after being robbed at gunpoint.

Abdul Sattar Edhi, 86, was asleep when a gang of armed men raided the Karachi slum building that serves as his residence and charity headquarters.

They made off with gold, silver and cash worth hundreds of thousands of dollars in the raid early on Sunday.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and opposition leader Bilawal Bhutto Zardari both condemned the robbery.

Mr Edhi is one of Pakistan's most revered figures and has spent a lifetime building up its largest health charity. The Edhi Foundation provides a broad range of free social services, including ambulances, orphanages and support for the elderly and disabled.

"I am heartbroken. After everything I have done, I never thought I'd be violated like this inside my own home," Mr Edhi told the BBC.

The BBC's Aleem Maqbool travels to Karachi to meet Dr Edhi and look back on his life and achievements
His son Faisal Edhi said: "My father is fine, but deeply saddened by this incident. He was tearful yesterday. It's not about the money or the valuables they took away. But his pride has been violated."

Many people took to social media to voice their anger at the robbery, which correspondents say is shocking despite the notoriously high crime rates in Karachi.

Mubashar Lucman, a leading presenter on the ARY News channel, said: "If a person of his stature is not safe in this country then what system are we talking about."

"It is heart breaking then what happened with our asset, our saviour, our angel.... Abdul Sattar Edhi saab," tweeted journalist Fereeha Idrees.

"Imagine what would have happened if Edhi got the Nobel Peace Prize and lost it in the robbery in his center," said another message.

Many messages urged people to donate to Edhi because of the robbery, but some others questioned why so much money and valuables had been kept in his residence.

Mr Edhi said as well as some cash kept for emergencies, the money and valuables included deposits entrusted to the foundation for safekeeping.

He said the robbers had walked straight to the locker where the money and gold was kept and demanded the key.

"I thought they came to ask me about the Edhi centre but they started asking me about money. I don't understand how they knew that everything was kept in the cupboard," Mr Edhi told the Express Tribune newspaper.

"Please protect my Pakistan where VIPs are guarded & Philanthropist are looted & abused on gun point," he said in a tweet.

Police are hunting for the robbers but have yet to make any arrests.

One of Pakistan's top charity leaders tells the BBC he is heartbroken after being robbed at gunpoint.

*Maulana Edhi is a great man.

Maulana Edhi is an example of a true Muslim, an amazing Muslim.

I am severely distressed by what has happened to him as he has done so much for decades for the poor and suffering while he himself lives a simple and modest life.

Ya Rabbee, Ya Malik ul Muluk, Ya Al-'Azeez, Ya Ar-Rahman Ya Ar-Raheem,

Oh Allah king of kings, our lord, our master, the Almighty, the beneficient, the merciful,

Please protect Maulana Edhi and his family and his noble struggle to help those in need.

                    Wa sallee 'alaa sayyidina Muhammad.

May Allah send peace and prayers upon our noble leader, Muhammad (alaihi salam).

                    Ameen, thumma ameen.
