Top global mathematicians to participate in SQU meet

    BYTIMES NEWS SERVICE | DECEMBER 25, 2013 , 8 : 03 AM GST

Barka: Professors of the Department of Mathematics and Science of the German University of Technology in Oman (GUtech) will participate in the upcoming 'Third International Conference on Numerical Analysis and Optimisation' to be held from January 5 to 9, 2014 at the Sultan Qaboos University (SQU).

The conference is being organised by the Department of Mathematics and Statistics of the College of Science at the SQU and will bring together internationally recognised scholars.

The conference is open to anyone interested in the field of applied mathematics, in particular students and teachers of mathematics.

"We are looking forward to this third conference and are expecting a large number of participants from the academia and from various private sector platforms that are in need of effective and efficient mathematical algorithms," said the head of the organising committee, Prof Dr Mehiddin
    Al Baali.

"We will have speakers from the UK, Japan, Italy, Canada, Germany, China, New Zealand, the USA and Belgium, all highly ranked scientists in the field of numerical analysis," specified Prof Bernhard Heim, Dean of the Faculty of Science at GUtech and member of the conference's organising committee. After the success of the previous International Mathematics Conferences in Muscat, we are organising this conference in cooperation with a number of colleges and universities in Oman, the UAE and Italy," explained Prof Bernhard Heim.

Numerical mathematics and optimisation are the cornerstones of all industrial endeavours — for example while planning vaccination strategies, exploiting oil fields or deciding about exact strategies to land a human being on the moon.

From the GUtech, a majority of the faculty of mathematics will participate and give presentations ranging from approximation theory to stochastic dynamical systems. Prof. Dr Elena Berdysheva will give a presentation on 'Bernstein Basis Polynomials and their Applications'.

Introduced in 1913 by the Russian mathematician Sergey Bernstein in the frame of theoretical approximation theory, Bernstein basis polynomials are today of particular importance in applied areas as well, like statistics, machine learning, and computer graphics.

Prof. Florian Rupp's presentation will be about 'Numerical Analysis and Simulation of Random Partial Differential Equations with Boundary Excitations.'

"The research in the field of a mathematical treatment of random effects, as they occur in nature, is still in its beginning, we have good approximations, but real noise is still hard to analyse.

"Thus, it is quite satisfying to these types of random perturbations under control for the most prominent physical applications, like wind or earthquake induced shaking of buildings and bridges or deformations due to random stress and shear forces," mentioned Prof. Rupp.

He will present his recent results on improving student learning in science, including the key drivers for student's success in mathematics as taught in the schools in the Sultanate of Oman.

    *Sallim 'alaal Omaniyeen.

Out of all the GCC states the one I have the most respect for is Oman. Excluding the history related to the holy prophet Muhammad (solAllahu 'alaihi wa sallam), in the GCC Oman has:

    - The most history

    - The most culture

    - Had the most empires including 3 regions, 2 continents (Oman, southern Balochistan and east Africa).

Omanis, though poorer, consider themselves culturally and historically superior and of a higher pedigree than nouveau riche Bedouin like the Emiratis in the UAE (who are mostly ethnically Balochi and Persian anyway according to some).

Omani imperial power extended to east Africa including Zanzibar.

    Sultan's palace in Oman.

Oman is totally different to the other GCC states.

    - It has history - the other GCC states do not and are recent creations.

    - It has an imperial history, the other GCC states do not.

    - It is peaceful and does not sponsor radicals or extremists as Saudi, Kuwait, UAE, Qatar do (Bahrain doesn't count as it is now Saudi Arabia's de facto 14th province).

Maybe because of its history, imperial past, more developed culture it does not have the inferiority complex of the Saudis, Kuwaitis, Emiratis and Qataris.

By the way Omanis (though poorer) look down on Emiratis as culturally inferior and as once being controlled by them.

I haven't meant many Omanis but the ones I have, have been exceptionally nice people and much better than the other peninsula Arabs including the Yemenis.

Proud to be one of Oman's closest friends: Bangladesh ambassador to Oman

    BYTIMES NEWS SERVICE | MARCH 29, 2014 , 8 : 50 AM GST

Muscat: The Bangladesh Embassy in Muscat celebrated the 43rd Anniversary of Independence and National Day of the People's Republic of Bangladesh at a reception in Crown Plaza on Wednesday night, where a large number of dignitaries and senior government officials were present.

On the occasion, Bangladesh's Ambassador to Oman, Sheikh Sekander Ali, extended greetings on behalf of his country to His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said and the people of Oman.

"Ever since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two brotherly Muslim countries, Oman and Bangladesh have been enjoying excellent bilateral relations. Bangladesh is proud to be one of the closest friends of the Sultanate, where a substantial number of skilled and semi-skilled Bangladeshi workers are contributing to the ongoing fast-track development activities in Oman. We are grateful to His Majesty for generously laying his trust in the abilities of the Bangladeshi workforce," he said.

Sheikh Sekander Ali added that the past few years have been most significant in boosting bilateral relations between Oman and Bangladesh.

"The Bangladesh foreign minister visited Oman in April 2012 and set a new course for bilateral relations. The Bangladesh foreign minister's visit was reciprocated by Omani authorities as they announced they would establish a full-fledged Embassy of the Sultanate in Bangladesh through a Royal Decree issued in September 2012. The Embassy of the Sultanate has been relocated to new premises since late 2013. The Bangladesh Minister for Expatriate Welfare and Overseas Employment had visited Oman in May 2013 and held meetings with his Omani counterparts, as they discussed improving the existing relations and recruitment of skilled and semi-skilled manpower from Bangladesh," he said.

      Bangladesh explores jute trade avenues

Muscat: An eight-member team from Bangladesh Jute Mill Corporation (BJMC), the world's largest jute exporter, on Wednesday met the Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry (OCCI) officials to explore business opportunities for jute products in oman.

"The meeting was fruitful. The OCCI officials are very much keen on our products and business plans. They have agreed to organise awareness programmes, seminars, workshops, and exhibitions of jute products in Oman in the coming months," Major General Humayun Khaled (rtd), the chairman of BJMC, told in an exclusive interview with the Times of Oman.

"The demand for jute products is always high as it is manufactured from natural fibre, which is absolutely eco-friendly and free from health hazards. Jute products will be apt for Oman's climatic conditions," Humayun said.

The BJMC, which has 82,000 employees, exports at least 200,000 tonnes of jute products to more than 100 countries. The delegation visited Oman after having similar meetings in Morocco and Nigeria.

"We have also invited the Omani trade officials and business people to Bangladesh to further study jute farming and jute products," Humayun said, adding that the possibilities of jute farming in Oman will also be considered in future.

As the largest manufacturer in the jute sector, BJMC produces from jute, the longest natural fibre in the world, mainly Hessian cloth, different types of Hessian bags, sack cloth, different types of jute bags, yarn, geo-jute, blankets, jute canvas, carpet backing cloth, and so on.
