Chinese navy dares US warship into dangerous game of chicken

In yet another example of China’s recently increased “maritime harassment,” a Chinese naval vessel forced an American guided missile cruiser to make a “dangerous maneuver” while the American warship was operating legally in international waters, according to a new report from the Washington Free Beacon.
On December 5, the USS Cowpens refused an order to stop “while lawfully operating in international waters in the South China Sea,” and what happened then could have had disastrous consequences.
    According to the Free Beacon:
“On December 5th, while lawfully operating in international waters in the South China Sea, USS Cowpens and a PLA Navy vessel had an encounter that required maneuvering to avoid a collision,” a Navy official said.
“This incident underscores the need to ensure the highest standards of professional seamanship, including communications between vessels, to mitigate the risk of an unintended incident or mishap.”
According to the officials, the run-in began after a Chinese navy vessel sent a hailing warning and ordered the Cowpens to stop. The cruiser continued on its course and refused the order because it was operating in international waters.
Then a Chinese tank landing ship sailed in front of the Cowpens and stopped, forcing the Cowpens to abruptly change course in what the officials said was a dangerous maneuver.
The encounter was the type of incident that senior Pentagon officials recently warned could take place as a result of heightened tensions in the region over China’s declaration of an air defense identification zone (ADIZ) in the East China Sea.

Chinese Military Ship Confronts U.S. Cruiser Amid Tensions

Dec. 13 (Bloomberg) -- A U.S. Navy guided-missile cruiser had a confrontation with a Chinese military ship on Dec. 5 in the South China Sea, underscoring rising tensions in the region over China’s newly declared air-defense zone.
The USS Cowpens, operating in international waters, and a Chinese naval vessel “had an encounter that required maneuvering to avoid a collision,” the U.S. Pacific Fleet said today in a statement.
“This incident underscores the need to ensure the highest standards of professional seamanship, including communications between vessels, to mitigate the risk of an unintended incident or mishap,” according to the Navy statement.
China was probably angry that the Cowpens may have been trying to spy on China’s only aircraft carrier, which was operating in the area, said Dean Cheng, an analyst at the Heritage Foundation’s Asian Studies Center in Washington.
“This was not an accident,” Cheng said in an interview. “It was deliberate. The Chinese are raising the ante.”
The U.S. government lodged protests over the incident with Chinese officials in Beijing and Washington, according to a State Department official who asked not to be named discussing the content of diplomatic communications.
The Chinese embassy in Washington didn’t immediately respond to an e-mailed request for comment.

    Both Maneuvered

Ultimately, officers on the Chinese and U.S. vessels communicated and both warships maneuvered to ensure safe passage, according to a U.S. defense official who asked not to be identified discussing the incident. The official said the outcome underscored the need for continuing military-to-military communications with China to reduce the risk of mishaps.
While the near-collision was resolved peacefully, Cheng said it hints at the growing risk of confrontation as China seeks ways to assert its sovereignty in the region.
China last month unnerved its neighbors by declaring an air defense identification zone in the East China Sea that overlaps with Japan’s zone and includes uninhabited islands claimed by both nations.
“I think we’re going to see much more tension in the air and on the surface,” Cheng said. “In the South China Sea, we’ve been seeing a steady ratcheting up of pressure.”
The Chinese vessel tried to force the Cowpens to stop, causing a military standoff, according to the Washington Free Beacon, a news website, which earlier reported the incident. The Cowpens continued on its course because it was operating in international waters.

    ‘Getting Dangerous’

After a second Chinese ship sailed in front of the Cowpens and stopped, the U.S. vessel was forced to change course to avoid a collision, the Free Beacon said.
“It’s getting dangerous out there,” said Patrick Cronin, a senior adviser for the Asia-Pacific Security Program at the Center for a New American Security in Washington. “Accidents happen. People can get killed out there through these maneuvers. We need more efforts at ways to tamp down or avert crises as they arise.”
Cronin said the incident appeared to be a “tit-for-tat” response to the U.S. refusing to recognize China’s new air defense zone.

“We’re making them look impotent with respect to the ADIZ,” Cronin said, referring to the acronym for air defense identification zone.
By trying to block a U.S. ship, China is engaging in “coercive diplomacy -- it’s neither war nor peace,” he said.

        1. China along with Russia defeated the hyper-aggressive American regime in Syria.

The American regime was thinking of carrying out illegal non-UN approved air strikes against a member of the United Nations, Syria. Russia and China sent ships off the Syrian coast, the US then backed down.

        2. This is another Chinese victory, though a small one.

American ships are thousands and thousands of miles away from their country and harassing China and breathing down her neck just off her (China's) coast.

The Chinese used an inferior vessel to make the Americans:

        a: Stop

b: Move out of the way and change course.

Imagine if Chinese naval craft were just a few miles away from Florida e.g Miami.

The western-media would be complaining of Chinese harassment and aggressive naval activity right next to the American coast.

America is a threat to world peace and security and needs to reduce its aggressive military activity and support for terrorism.

I fully support our Asia neighbours and brothers, the Chinese against US naval aggression.

        3. This American naval craft was engaged in spying against China.

In particular China's new aircraft carrier, the Liaoning.

The USS Cowpens was conducting surveillance of China’s new aircraft carrier, the Liaoning, at the time.
Why China forced a confrontation at sea with the US Navy - CSMonitor.com

The Chinese dragon is showing the American snake or "eagle" that China is not going to put up with nonsense from the American regime anymore.

By standing up to the American regime, China is in fact helping the rest of the 7 billion people on earth as the US will think twice about aggression, bullying and terrorism.

The Americans pick on weak countries they can bully e.g. Afghanistan, Iraq (after decades of sanction and weakening), Libya but like true bullies and cowards will never pick on a strong power like China or Russia.

        Good going PLAN. Well done!
