Moon walk or Death Star? China’s lunar plans a mystery

    By Jeremy A. KaplanPublished December 10, 2013FoxNews.com

A Chinese satellite has entered lunar orbit and should drop a robotic probe on the moon as early as Friday -- the first such moon landing in nearly four decades. But China's ultimate plans are unclear, whether simply scientific or the first steps toward a military base on the moon.

The Chang’e 3 satellite was launched from southwest China on Dec. 2 and entered orbit around the moon on Dec. 6. It will deposit a robotic rover on the moon as early as Dec. 14. China’s long range goals are murky, according to Thomas Reiter, director for human spaceflight and operations with the European Space Agency (ESA). Yet militarizing the moon would be a shame, he said.

“I could not imagine that human exploration is getting … pushed by military consideration,” Reiter told FoxNews.com. “It would really be a pity.”

'It could indicate interest in the next decade in bringing humans to the lunar surface.'
    - Thomas Reiter, director of human spaceflight and operations at the ESA

The ESA is helping China to the moon, a landing that will be the first controlled descent since Russia’s Luna-24 landed in 1976. The space agency’s worldwide network of satellites are tracking the science mission while expert teams on the ground are lending technical assistance. But not even the ESA knows exactly what China has planned.

“The strategic long-term goals of China in human exploration … are not very clear yet,” Reiter said. China’s goals could include landing men on the moon, a feat only the United States has managed to do, the last time 41 years ago, he said.

“I believe they are taking a clear path with some first steps, and I could imagine yes, this could be interest in the next decade in bringing humans to the lunar surface.”

Russia also has shown interest in the moon, Reiter said. Yet the ESA, like NASA, has no concrete plans to do more than help when it comes to lunar exploration.

“NASA is not going to the moon with a human as a primary project probably in my lifetime,” NASA administrator Charles Bolden said at an April panel in Washington.
NASA spokesman David Weaver echoed that sentiment, telling FoxNews.com that it is working with international partners to plan missions to the moon and elsewhere.

“We are deeply involved in lunar science, with two satellites currently orbiting the moon,” he said. “The global community is committed to working together on a unified deep-space exploration strategic plan, with robotic and human missions to destinations that include near-Earth asteroids, the moon and Mars.

Reiter also put the moon on a short list, including low-Earth orbit and Mars. But due to budgetary restrictions, the ESA has no plans of its own to visit the moon.

“For the moment, we do not have a dedicated lunar exploration program,” he told FoxNews.com. At a recent conference in Naples, the space agency proposed a program for a European lunar landing mission to the south pole.

“Due to the overall economic situation of the member states, this could not be approved,” Reiter said. “We are looking into a cooperative mission with the Russian partners.”

Yet Reiter said the agency remains focused on the moon, despite a decades-long dry spell in lunar landings.

“I believe the moon is still a very important destination,” he said. “If we really intend to take a human mission to Mars … in two decades or maybe a little more, this way leads by the moon.”

Moon walk or Death Star? China

    1. Aside from the Sino-phobia in the article implying any Chinese exploration of the moon is sinister, i.e. only western moon exploration is legitimate this article clearly shows China is surpassing the US in certain fields.

    2. China has proven itself to be a much more responsible member of the international community than the hyper-aggressive USA.

China lands Jade Rabbit robot rover on Moon

    By Paul Rincon
    Science editor, BBC News website

The lander has touched down on a flat plain known as Sinus Iridum (the Bay of Rainbows)

China says it has successfully landed a craft carrying a robotic rover on the surface of the Moon, the first soft landing there for 37 years.

On Saturday afternoon (GMT), a landing module used thrusters to touch down, marking the latest step in China's ambitious space exploration programme.

Several hours later, the lander will deploy a robotic rover called Yutu, which translates as "Jade Rabbit".

The touchdown took place on a flat plain called Sinus Iridum.

The Chang'e-3 mission launched atop a Chinese-developed Long March 3B rocket on 1 December from Xichang in the country's south.

China's space mission team celebrate after the landing

The official Xinhua news service reported that the craft began its descent just after 1300 GMT (2100 Beijing time), touching down in Sinus Iridum (the Bay of Rainbows) 11 minutes later.

State television showed pictures of the moon's surface as the lander touched down and an eye-level view of the landing site was released later on Saturday. Staff at mission control in Beijing clapped and celebrated after confirmation came through.

The probe's soft-landing was the most difficult task during the mission, Wu Weiren, the lunar programme's chief designer, told Xinhua.

It is the third robotic rover mission to land on the lunar surface, but the Chinese vehicle carries a more sophisticated payload than previous missions, including ground-penetrating radar which will gather measurements of the lunar soil and crust.

"It's still a significant technological challenge to land on another world," said Peter Bond, consultant editor for Jane's Space Systems and Industry told the AP news agency.

"You have to use rocket motors for the descent and you have to make sure you go down at the right angle and the right rate of descent and you don't end up in a crater or on top of a large rock."

The landing module actively reduced its speed at about 15km from the Moon's surface.

When it reached a distance of 100m from the surface, the craft fired thrusters to slow its descent.

At a distance of 4m, the lander switched off the thrusters and fell to the lunar surface.

The Jade Rabbit was expected to be deployed several hours after touchdown, driving down a ramp lowered by the landing module.

Reports suggest the lander and rover will photograph each other at some point on Sunday.

According to Chinese space scientists, the mission is designed to test new technologies, gather scientific data and build intellectual expertise, as well as scouting for mineral resources that could eventually be mined.

"China's lunar program is an important component of mankind's activities to explore [the] peaceful use of space," said Sun Huixian, a space engineer with the Chinese lunar programme.

The 120kg (260lb) Jade Rabbit rover can reportedly climb slopes of up to 30 degrees and travel at 200m (660ft) per hour.

    ......

The rover and lander are powered by solar panels but some sources suggest they also carry radioisotope heating units (RHUs), containing plutonium-238 to keep them warm during the cold lunar night.

Dean Cheng, a senior research fellow at the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think-tank in Washington DC, said China's space programme was a good fit with China's concept of "comprehensive national power". This might be described as a measure of a state's all-round capabilities.

Space exploration was, he told BBC News, "a reflection of your economic power, because you need spare resources to have a space programme. It clearly has military implications because so much space technology is dual use".

He added: "It reflects your scientific and technological capabilities, it supports your diplomacy by making you appear strong.

"China is saying: 'We are doing something that only two other countries have done before - the US and the Soviet Union."

The Chang'e-3 mission launches from Xichang, south China
Mr Cheng explained that the mission would also advertise the country as a destination for commercial space launches, as well as providing an opportunity to test China's deep-space tracking and communications.

"The rover will reportedly be under Earth control at various points of its manoeuvres on the lunar surface," Mr Cheng wrote in a blog post.

"Such a space observation and tracking system has implications not only for space exploration but for national security, as it can be used to maintain space surveillance, keeping watch over Chinese and other nations' space assets."

China has been methodically and patiently building up the key elements needed for an advanced space programme - from launchers to manned missions in Earth orbit to unmanned planetary craft - and it is investing heavily.

"China wants to go to the Moon for geostrategic reasons and domestic legitimacy," Prof Joan Johnson-Freese, of the US Naval War College in Rhode Island, told the AFP news agency.

"With the US exploration moribund at best, that opens a window for China to be perceived as the global technology leader - though the US still has more, and more advanced, assets in space."

The landing site is a flat volcanic plain, part of a larger feature known as Mare Imbrium that forms the right eye of the "Man in the Moon".

The lander will operate there for a year, while the rover is expected to work for some three months.

After this, a mission to bring samples of lunar soil back to Earth is planned for 2017. And this may set the stage for further robotic missions, and - perhaps - a crewed lunar mission in the 2020s.

          1. The rise of China and south Asia i.e. Bangladesh/India is inevitable as these two civilizations were always more advanced than western Europe for millenia, and their return to economic and thus political dominance is something that will recur.

          2. America is the biggest enemy to Asians be they Chinese, Bangladesh, Indian etc because they wish to play divide and rule and frustrate the growth of non-white people and perpetuate white dominance.

Why for example do the Americans support Jamaat e Islami in Bangladesh, when their own state department blacklists one of the key Jamaati speakers (Sayeedi) and Jamaat are a communal anti-Hindu party known for violence and terrorism?

It is to have the political Islam card to be able to use against Bangladesh but more importantly against India as part of their divide and rule policy.

          3. Though we have issues with India, I believe that the fundamental problem with New Delhi policy makers is an arrogance and false belief in the supposed disparity in power between Bangladesh and India i.e. in their eyes India is a "mighty giant", Bangladesh is a "land of poverty and failure".

The truth is Bangladesh is in many ways superior to both India and Pakistan e.g. HDI (Human Development Indexes) and can never be invaded and occupied by India, due to its huge 160 million population.

Kashmir is a thorn in India's flesh but is only 4 million people or so but there may be 0.6 million Indian troops, which is a ratio of 1:7 roughly.

Bangladesh has 40 times more people than Kashmir and is marshy and parts of it are jungle.

To have a 1:7, soldier to civilian ratio in Bangladesh would require 22 million Indian soldiers. If America could not defeat the Vietnamese and Russia could not defeat the Afghans, there is no way India can defeat Bangladeshis.

I wish to resolve all bi-lateral problems with India and then have a healthy trading relationship enabling Bangladesh to enjoy the benefits of being next to a massive market of 1 billion consumers.

This is what most Bangladeshis want. We do not want war and conflict with India but peace and trade.

Forums such as defence.pk are propaganda forums where you even have Al-Qaeda supporters showing videos and pictures of beheadings, yesterday on that forum an Al-Qaeda supporter justified the murder of babies. The "Bangladeshis" on that forum do not represent Bangladesh but Jamaat e Islami which has 1% support in Bangladesh as per The Economist magazine. The moderators there take action against normal Bangladeshi posters if they speak against Jamaat thus ensuring Jamaati dominance and the Pakistani agenda of presenting Bangladeshis as people hateful of India and India as an evil oppressor.

By the way in addition to the Al-Qaeda supporters on that forum, the Jamaatis on that forum are now speaking about obtaining arms and launching a war against the Bangladeshi police in other words a terrorist campaign.

Defence.pk a Pakistani nationalist hate-site with Al-Qaeda supporters and others. Jamaatis on that forum have called for terrorism against the Bangladeshi army and police.

          4. I do not comment about Afghan affairs on this forum because I am not an Afghan but this is what an Indian said a day or two ago on a Bangladeshi military site, that Indian by the way is a Modi-supporter.

          Indian poster:

USA doesn't want to quit Afghanistan, it wants to convert Afghanistan into another Pakistan. We already know that US is involved in secret negotiations with Taleban and Al-Qaeda and the US can use them to destabilize Afghanistan in future. India, Iran and Russia must join hands to counter this looming threat. Any increased US presence is a huge threat to all these three countries.

Iran, India and Russia are cooperating in Afghanistan and US doesn't want that to happen. We will soon see US assisting the anti-government forces in Afghanistan, take my words US will once again support the Taliban and the Al-Qaeda in future, it has been doing exactly that in Syria. It is not Pakistan which we fear. The question is can we allay Pakistan's fears. If that happens then it will be good for all countries. We must keep this region for ourselves, foreign powers must have absolutely no say. India to sign draft pact to develop Iran’s Chabahar port: Afghan envoy - Livemint

So the US is the number one enemy of Asian states but also of Russia and a threat to international peace and stability in general. It is also the biggest sponsor of radical Islam, which it promotes through its proxies such as the Saudis, Pakistanis and AKP Turkey.

China, Russia and it now seems India realize this.

Together they are too strong for the US to continue its illegal invasions, global terrorism and murder.

The American humiliation and backing down in Syria when Chinese and Russian ships went to the Syrian coast showed that.

So none of us "brown/yellow" people should fall for the "rule and divide" tricks of the western states.

Quote from an Al-Qaeda supporter on defence.pk, supporter of Jubhat an Nusra and ISIS in Syria:

In islam little babies n kids who died are not guarenteed paradise or Hell, Allah knows best what they would have done if they lived thus their faith is decided .all u can do is pray the alawi kid wouldn't've grown up to become an alawi wich is 99% the case for other alawi kids who live n grow old
            Post 11555

Civil Conflict in Syria | News & Discussions: Thread 2. | Page 578

I have taken a print screen of the post just in case the Pakistani nationalist moderators there claim that such a post by an Al-Qaeda supporter on their site did not exist.

That post was said in the context of another poster lamenting the death of an Alawi baby allegedly killed in an operation involving Al-Nusra fighters.

Notice no expression of sorrow or regret at the death of the baby but taunting ending with a smiley emoticon.

Also previously an Al-Qaeda supporter there said that if innocent civilians are killed in a suicide bombing they will go to paradise which is one reason why Al-Qaeda bombers feel no inhibitions about carrying out suicide bombings in civilian areas.

            - The USA supports radical extremists and militants to destabilize different countries and promote US interests as they did in Libya with Al-Qaeda affiliated fighters.

China, Russia and now it looks like India are fully aware of the US role in supporting militants and terrorists and will work together to combat this.

            - As Bangladeshis we will sooner or later ban Jamaat e Islami permanently and America and its puppets such as Saudi Arabia, and Erdogan won't be able to stop us.
