    Angola Bans Islam, Destroys Mosques

    Sunday, 24 November 2013 00:00

Last October, Muslims from the urban municipality of Viana, Luanda, attended the destruction of the minaret of their mosque Zengo.

LUANDA – According to several Angolan newspapers, Angola has become the first country in the world to ban Islam and Muslims, taking first measures by destroying mosques in the country.

“The process of legalization of Islam has not been approved by the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights, their mosques would be closed until further notice,” Rosa Cruz e Silva, the Angolan Minister of Culture, was quoted by Agence Ecofin on Friday, November 22.

Silva comments were given during her visit last Tuesday to the 6th Commission of the National Assembly.

She asserted that the decision was the latest is a series of efforts to ban ‘illegal’ religious sects.

According to the minister, the action was necessary to fight relentlessly against the emergence of congregations whose worshipping is contradicting with the customs of the Angolan culture.

Same as Islam, other faiths which were not legalized will face closure of their houses of worship.

“All sects on the list published by the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights in the Angolan newspaper ‘Jornal de Angola’ are prohibited to conduct worship, so they should keep their doors closed," she was quoted by Cameroon Voice‏.

"In addition, we also have a long list of more than a thousand legalization applications,” she added.

The anti-Islam comments were not the first by Angolan officials.

“This is the final end of Islamic influence in our country,” President José Eduardo dos Santos was quoted by Osun Defender newspaper on Sunday, November 24.

Last October, Muslims from the urban municipality of Viana, Luanda, attended the destruction of the minaret of their mosque Zengo.

The provincial governor of Luanda, Bento Bento, has also said on the airwaves of a local radio that "radical Muslims are not welcome in Angola and the Angolan government is not ready for the legalization of mosques."

He added that Muslims were not welcome in Angola and that the government would not legalize the presence of mosques in the country.

According to CIA Factbook, 47% of Angolans practice indigenous beliefs, 38% Roman Catholic and 15% Protestant.

Islam’s opinion about freedom of religion is evident from the Qur’an, which says what means:

*{Say, ‘The truth is from your Lord’: Let him who will, believe, and let him who will, reject [it]}* (An-Nisaa' 4:29)

Again, God says: *{Let there be no compulsion in religion: Truth stands out clear from Error…}* (Al-Baqarah 2:256)

    President of Angola.

    If this is true...

Angola should be expelled from the Organization of African Unity or all Muslim countries in it i.e. Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, Morocco, Niger, Chad, Sudan, Senegal, Gambia, Burkina Faso etc should leave the OAU if Angola is not expelled.

radical Muslims are not welcome in Angola

The word Radical is significant here. Why Angola was not banning Islam earlier, why now? Some people confuse Islam and Islamism.

If Salafis wahabis continue their march, you will hear many such news.

Here is a Jewish writer on Islam in Angola:

"Furthermore, it is not clear whether the Angolan Muslims are really allied with al-Qaeda or not. It might be that al-Qaeda has been setting its sights on destabilizing Angola in order to disrupt its supply of oil to the West and to China and to control the Angolan diamond industry, but until now no activity of al-Qaeda in the country has been ascertained. Yet, al-Qaeda might take advantage of the suspicious attitude by which the Christians treat the Muslims in Angola in order to recruit Muslims into their ranks. If al-Qaeda can triumph in Angola, it can continue its plans to wage economic warfare against the West as well as seize a major income producing resource for its own ends."

"Public attitudes toward Islam have been generally negative. Cultural differences between Angolan and Muslim West African immigrants have been the basis for negative views toward Islam, as was the perceived link between Islam and illegal immigration."

Further, it is Hezbollah through the second largest group of Muslims, Lebanese Muslims that has a stronger presence and diamond trade involvement.

More information on corrupt Angolan ruler, Jose Eduardo dos Santos:

Many Angolans are against this thug.

José Eduardo dos Santos continues to manage public funds and the lives of Angolans with shocking arrogance and disregard for common sense. He commits acts of corruption in broad daylight, gives himself over to the abuse of power and drags the country into immorality.

Angolan citizens have a right and a duty to bring judicial, civic, moral and patriotic pressure to bear for the rapid dismissal of José Eduardo dos Santos from the office of the President of the Republic on the grounds of his incorrigible record of corruption.

There are calls in Angola for this corrupt thug to be removed due to killings of the opposition:

The revelations about the killings have sparked unusual political turmoil in Angola. The country’s main opposition party, the Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA), has called for a public demonstration on November 23 to demand that President Dos Santos step down because of his alleged responsibility for the killings. The ruling People’s Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) condemned the killings in a statement but warned that UNITA is trying to “create chaos” and is “preparing a new civil war.”

Here is one of the pictures of one of the broken mosques.

Muslim countries should unite and ask international organizations to expel Angola.

              - Bangladesh, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Malaysia, Afghanistan, Indonesia, Egypt, Morocco, Jordan, Iraq etc should unite and ask the UN to expel Angola for violating human rights and the fundamental human right to practise religion.

              - Muslim countries should ask FIFA to expel Angola from FIFA.

              - Muslim countries in the OAU should ask the OAU to expel Angola from the OAU.

Muslim celebrities around the world should start a social media campaign asking for the end of this ban. Muslim footballers should even wear logos on their T-shirts calling for the end to oppression of Muslims in Angola.

Hopefully someone will start a twitter, facebook campaign.

By the way there may be more to this than meets the eye, Angola has virtually zero relations with any Muslim country but does have relations with Serbia and Israel.

As Muslims we should have no problem with Angolans as a race, who are just ordinary human beings like the rest of us.

The issue is the actions of their government which must be condemned internationally and action must be taken.

If Angola wants to play in international sport and the Egyptian/Algerian/Moroccan/Senegalese/Gambian football team go to Angola and want to perform prayer (salah) are the Angolans going to ban them?

The Muslim countries of Africa should refuse to allow Angola to play in their country, there are 27 African members of the OIC (Organization of Islamic Co-operation) if all 27 refused to allow Angola to play on their territory then FIFA could do nothing and cannot expel all 27 particularly if the other 30 Muslim countries all support them.

All 57 members should ban Angola from playing in their countries or any diplomatic relations with them until they stop this anti-Muslim oppression.

FIFA cannot take action against all 57 Muslim countries and if they do then so be it.

                  OIC member states in Green.

Muslims should organize protests outside Angolan embassies in all western countries and around the world.

Not ascertained but there are doubts. They may be doing it to prevent what happened to Kenya or may be confusing Islam and Islmism.

Also this is not correct that Angola has no relations with Muslim countries. According to this list even Palestine besides other Muslim countries has an embassy in Luanda.

Angola Denies It Banned Islam, Destroyed Mosques

                        on November 25 2013 2:08 PM

Angola's President Jose Eduardo dos Santos talks to journalists after a signature agreement ceremony held at Sao Bento Palace in Lisbon, Portugal

Angola became a hot topic in the international media over the weekend, as news outlets around the world wrote about reports that the Southwest African nation had banned Islam and had begun to dismantle mosques.

But an official at the Angolan Embassy in Washington, D.C., who did not want to be identified while discussing the sensitive matter, said that there is no such ban, and that the reports are erroneous.

“The Republic of Angola … it’s a country that does not interfere in religion,” the official said via telephone Monday afternoon. “We have a lot of religions there. It is freedom of religion. We have Catholic, Protestants, Baptists, Muslims and evangelical people.”

News of Angola’s supposed ban on Islam originated in the African press, which went so far as to quote the nation’s president and minister of culture offering statements that suggested the premise of the reports was accurate.

A second official at the Angolan Embassy in the U.S. reiterated that the diplomatic seat has not been made aware of any ban on Islam in the country.

“At the moment we don’t have any information about that,” the official told IBTimes via phone on Monday. “We’re reading about it just like you on the Internet. We don’t have any notice that what you’re reading on the Internet is true.”

A close examination of some of the initial reports about the supposed ban and dismantling of mosques reveals some suspect findings. One such discrepancy is that a Google Images search shows that a photograph published by numerous news outlets this month that purportedly depicts the minaret of an Angolan mosque being dismantled in October 2012 had been used at least as early Jan. 23, 2008, when the Housing & Land Rights Network posted it to illustrate an article about the destruction of Bedouin homes in Israel.

The officials at the Angolan Embassy in Washington could not attest to the veracity of the comments attributed to officials in Angola seemingly affirming the Islam ban, which outlets including IBTimes had referenced in initial stories on the reports published over the weekend.

Angolan President José Eduardo dos Santos reportedly weighed in on the controversy, as he was quoted in Nigeria's Osun Defender newspaper on Sunday as saying, "This is the final end of Islamic influence in our country," according to a report by the website OnIslam.net, which was accompanied by the suspect photo supposedly depicting the Angolan mosque’s minaret being dismantled in October of last year.

“The president has been out of the country for a week,” the first Angolan Embassy official mentioned above said, contending that as such he could not have made the remarks as they were reported.

Weekly French-language Moroccan newspaper La Nouvelle Tribune published an article on Friday sourcing "several" Angolan officials, including the minister of Culture, Rosa Cruz, who reportedly offered the following remarks, which have been translated from French: "The process of legalization of Islam has not been approved by the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights. Their mosques would be closed until further notice."

OnIslam.net reports that the African economic news agency Agence Ecofin wrote that Cruz made the statement at an appearance last week before the 6th Commission of the National Assembly. The website goes on to note that, "According to several Angolan newspapers, Angola has become the first country in the world to ban Islam and Muslims, taking first measures by destroying mosques in the country."

The first Angolan Embassy official denied knowledge that Cruz had made such comments.

“I cannot confirm if the Minister of Culture said that. I cannot find that in our press,” the official said.

La Nouvelle Tribune also reported that a minaret of an Angolan mosque was dismantled last October, and that the city of Zango "has gone further by destroying the only mosque in the city." The Embassy officials could not authenticate either of these claims.

Angola is a majority-Christian nation of about 16 million people, of whom an estimated 55 percent are Catholic, 25 percent belong to African Christian denominations, 10 percent follow major Protestant traditions and 5 percent belong to Brazilian Evangelical churches. Only 80,000 to 90,000 Angolans are Muslim, according to the U.S. State Department.
                        1. Someone somewhere is lying or telling half of the story.

Either the Nigerian and Moroccan publications i.e. both of them lied when they quoted Angolan officials.

Or the Angolans are backtracking from their original decision.

                        2. Whatever the case maybe as long as Angola allows freedom of religion in the country then we have no ill feelings towards the country.

*Personally I think someone in the Angolan government did say something about applying restrictions on Islam or Muslims at the very least and this formed the basis of the Nigerian and Moroccan publications, the Angolan government may then have got scared by the negative publicity and is now backtracking.

                        However someone is definitely lying.

Destruição da Mesquitas Muçulmanas em Angola - YouTube

This video from September shows a mosque being destroyed by the Angolan authorities.

At 0.15 the man says "eeh mesquita" (which is the Spanish/Portuguese for mosque).

The destruction of at least 11 mosques in the last two months in Angola is provoking reactions of outrage online.

According to Voz da América [pt], Angolan authorities state that the reason for the destruction is illegal construction. Other reports add that the process of legalization of Islam and other religions in the country has not been approved by the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights, and therefore, according to the news agency of the state AngolaPress, ”their temples will be closed until the new pronunciation in the case”. The Minister of Culture, Rosa Cruz e Silva, said that a law related to liberty of religious assembly should be revised “as a way of fighting ‘vigorously’ the coming up of new religious congregation whose religious assembly are contrary to our habits and customs to Angolan culture.”

The Muslim Community of Angola (CISA) considers that the government is undertaking religious persecution and preventing the realization of religious cults. So is referred in the caption of a video posted on Youtube last September by Coque Manuel which shows a mosque in the city of Moxico being destroyed:

A destruição (…) deve ser imediatamente interrompida e exigimos ao Presidente Angola que peça desculpas aos muçulmanos em todo o mundo. Se não, então gostaríamos de convidar a comunidade Islâmica para realizar manifestações pacíficas em frente dos edifícios das embaixadas angolanas em todo o mundo.

The destruction (…) must be immediately stopped and we demand an apology from the President of Angola to muslims around the world. If not, then we would like to invite the Islam community to protest peacefully in front of the buildings of Angolan embassies around the world.

So yes the Angolan regime were targeting Islam.

They have got scared now and are lying and claiming they are a land of freedom and religious tolerance, which they clearly are not.

Now it is getting clear but one cannot expect from OIC to take any action in such matters. If OIC has nothing so far on hot issues like Palestine, Afghanistan, Somalia, Sudan, Bosnia, Syria, Kashmir, Iraq, Egypt, Mali etc then what it will do on such issues of lesser significance.

UN can do something as freedom of religion is a fundamental human right. If Islam is presented as a religion and some one bans it , its against UN charter but Islamism is banned will be good news for humanity.
