Fazlullah is son in law of Sufi Muhammad the radical Mulla from Dir district, now in jail in Peshawar and chief of TNSM. Fazlullah was a common air lifter working in a chair lift used by the people of Swat crossing river Swat from a place in Mingora called Fiza gat to Mam derai, the village of Fazlullah in Kabal tehsil of Swat district.

According to my information Fazlullah has got basic primary or secondary education in government schools but has never attended any madrassa formally. He is not a Mullah by profession or caste but a Yousafzai Pashtun. First time Taliban have a non Mehsud Yousafzai Pashtun as their chief.

I had met Sufi Muhammad and Fazluulah, both are extremely hard liners. Sufi Muhamamd is a practicing Salafi Ahle hadith(ghair muqalid=non-conformist), non Hanafi but I have seen Fazlullah offering prayers according to Hanafi Fiq. He is the one who ruled Swat for almost two years till banished by Pakistani army and now residing in Kunarr Afghanistan.

He himself is not a salafi, his father in law, sufi mohammad, is and there is a rumor that he married sufi's daughter by elopement. The only religious education he got was reading a couple of books while in prison.

He was in jahanzeb college for one buy then he left. And started religious education at sufi's madrassa in Dir upto five darja. He fought against america in afghanistan when he came back he was captured by the border forces and kept in peshawar for few months. His brother was killed in afghanistan by americans and he married his brother's wife the daughter of sufi.

1. I believe Pakistan is a cursed state and is cursed for a variety of different reasons including the Bangladesh genocide it carried out in 1971 and mass rapes, but however even before that there is what I believe is the "lanat" (curse) of the Faqir of Ipi on this state, an Islamic holy man from...guess...yes...Waziristan.

2. My head told me that the Pakistani authorities and TTP were going to reconcile and have peace talks, my heart told me that is not what is destined for Pakistan. The Faqir of Ipi was a pious man who fought the British and their successors the Pakistanis. He must have made du'a against them.

3. Since then - the announcement of possible peace talks - we have now seen unexpectedly the killing of the head of the TTP and the TTP now saying peace talks are over.

I have a feeling that this war will only end when the TTP - who apparently are the size of two divisions (a division is the biggest component of any army) at 30,000 - will launch a ground offensive to capture Islamabad and its adjacent sister city of Rawalpindi, the home of Pakistan's military.

I think that there will be a decisive climax. When? I don't know.

I could be wrong however and Pakistan might overcome this militancy as Algeria did (100,000 killed there in the 1990s) and become an Asian tiger economy.

Do you think this popularity of Fazlullah is all engineered by ISI. The local Pashtuns of Swat have nothing to do with making him popular and supporting him.

Maulana Fazalullah, a thirty three years old resident of Mamderai, Swat is the most talked about personality in the region. He has a large number of followers many of whom are ready to sacrifice their lives and every thing for his cause. He was born in the house of Biladar Khan; a Pukhtun of Babukarkhel clan of the Yusufzai tribe of Swat. Biladar Khan was highly inspired by the TNSM movement (Movement for the enforcement of Shariah laws) patroned by Maulana Sufi Muhammad became one of the right-hand men of the Maulana.


Finding himself even more devoted for the said cause, he sent his son, the then Fazal Hayat, now naming Fazalullah to his Madrassa (seminary) at Kumbar, Dir. This close and long association between the two ultimately got shaped into matrimonial relationship.


Biladar Khan is no more, Sufi Muhammad is in Prison but the son and son in law, Maulana Fazallulah, is leading the same movement, thus fulfilling the great wish of his father and father in law.


Fazalullah has made his native village Mamderai as headquarter of the TNSM, thus got it shifted from Kumbar, Dir to Mamderai, Swat.
Maulana has started his own F M radio channel for his preachings and having a big circle of listeners. Strange to say most of his listeners are the women folk.


Six months ago when he expressed about his own wish of establishing a Madrassa, Mosque and offices, the people responded even more beyond his expectations. They generously donated in cash and kinds. Hundreds and thousands of people voluntarily take part in the construction process turn by turn daily. They work full day on their own expenses including food and equipment. Thus this huge complex is expediting towering.


For Jumma (Friday) prayers a vast tract of land is levelled to accommodate a huge gathering of people from nearly all villages of Swat, praise worthy to see.


The Maulana makes a riding show (with himself on a black horse) after the Jumma Prayers in the same ground, so that the people can have a glimpse of him.
