Pakistani government says talks have started with Taliban
The Pakistani government has established contact with the Pakistani Taliban in an attempt to bring peace and an end to militancy, Interior Minister Chaudri Nisar Ali said Thursday.
Ali told main parties in the National Assembly that "procedure, agenda and venue for the proposed talks was being discussed" through contact with the Taliban group, an opposition leader in the assembly told reporters after being briefed by the minister.
GeoTV reported on Ali's communication to the parliamentary leaders.
Designated by the government as its point man to hold talks with the Pakistani Taliban, Ali told the parliamentary party leaders that between 37 and 57 militant groups were operating in Pakistan and not all of them were members of the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan, informally known as the Pakistani Taliban, with whom government is holding talks.
Ali reportedly said that talks were delayed because of the killing of a three-star general and an attack on a church in Peshawar in September after a decision by all parties to hold parleys with the Pakistani Taliban.
