Sheikha Mayassa Tops Art Power List for $1 Billion Spend

Sheikha Mayassa bint Hamad Al Thani, sister of Qatar’s Emir and chairwoman of the Qatar Museums Authority, tops ArtReview’s 2013 ranking of the art world’s 100 most influential figures, the Power 100, published today.
Sheikha Mayassa’s notoriety soared last year when Vanity Fair magazine reported that Qatar had paid $250 million for one of Cezanne’s “The Card Players.” Having joined the list at no. 90 in 2011, she climbed to 11th position in 2012.

The Qatari royal was chosen “on account of her organization’s vast purchasing power and willingness to spend -- at a rate estimated to be $1 billion a year,” Art Review said in a news release.
Up three notches to No. 2 is New York-based gallery owner David Zwirner, followed by dealers Iwan Wirth and Larry Gagosian. Hans Ulrich Obrist and Julia Peyton-Jones, co-directors of London’s Serpentine Gallery, rank fifth, up five positions.
Several artists have landed on the list for the first time: Japan’s Yayoi Kusama (67th), Mark Leckey (82nd), Zeng Fanzhi (83rd), and El Anatsui (98th).
Steve McQueen, the visual artist who directed the movie “12 Years a Slave,” rose 23 notches to No. 36 on the list.
Also new to the list: Jennifer Flay, director of FIAC, the Paris contemporary-art fair, which takes place this week.
Last year, the list was led by Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev, artistic director of the 2012 Documenta exhibition in Kassel, Germany and the first woman to top the Power 100. In 2011, Chinese dissident artist Ai Weiwei was number one.

The money of Qatar is for Qatar not for Yemen. Yemen should take care of its own problems. Why should Qatar spends its resources on other countries?
We should discourage the culture of charities and aid. Every one should be responsible for its own development and prosperity.

Yemen has a lot of natural and human resources but they lack leadership and have to dismantle Al Qaeda and Salafism there.

Qatar and Saudi being rich can tolerate salafism for some times but poor countries like Yemen no. They need democracy, capitalism, development and material progress more than others. Al Qaeda will only introduce Sharia courts but no development.

I am happy a Salafi state Qqatar is spending on art. I do not how the Salafi Mullahs allow art in Qatar?

^ well that is going directly against the Islamic priniples, especially when the disparity between rich and poor is so huge. Like the guy in the other thread (video) said, the current system in the world is not working and sooner or later the whole world will go in to a revolution. The rich have so much money, that they dont even know what to do with it, while the poor just keep suffering and suffering. Your world view is clearly coming from a very secular/atheist point of view, humanity is not found in that view

            what a bit*h

The Prophet (Allah bless him and grant him peace) said: “The feet of a servant will not move on the Day of Judgment until he has been questioned his wealth - where he earned it and how he spent it.” (Tirmidhi, Kitab sifat al Qiyamah wal Raqa’iq)

^ Good quote. Islam is all about taking care of people in whatever way possible. These days people have no humanity left in them. It's all about greed and selfishness.

LOL saing that in a tread where a woman form a strict Islamic society doesn't give a dam about poor peopel. Not everything what Badlun says comes from secular or atheist point of vieuw, most of it is just his own personality and if that was true, than western countries would not have a social system that they do have now.

calling Qatar or any gulf state is mocking Islam, what Islamic values do these countries have? These people are so far away from Islamic values, that western non muslim values actually feel much closer to Islam

Muslims societies in general do not follow any thing Islamic, this is the sad affair of muslims today.

But that's what Badlun was advocating against not too long ago.

International funding under UN or EU or ASEAN umbrella in an effective way has nothing bad. Similarly many NGOs working in Pashtun areas with community participation is also something very good. But the best way of international cooperation is trade not aid.

I am also in favor of skill development, investment , FDI and public private partnerships. Not charities on the basis of religion or Islamic brotherhood. This makes you dependable and you always have a beggar mentality. Do not ask just share. We should learn from each other fishing, how to catch fish not to donate and receive fish for one time food. Cooperation in disasters is indeed understandable.
