Parents murder daughter, lover for ‘honour’ in Haryana

Youth was beheaded and his body dumped in front of his house in Rohtak

Despite the Supreme Court’s strictures, Haryana’s shame through “honour killings” continued as a couple were brutally killed in full public view on Wednesday at Gharnavathi in Rohtak, home district of Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda.
Nidhi Barak, 20, was lynched by her own family and they broke the limbs of Dharmendra Barak, 23, before beheading him and dumping the body in front of his house. The police have arrested Nidhi’s parents, brother and uncle and are on the lookout for others involved in the killing.
Some witnesses have also been detained.
Nidhi and Dharmendra were studying in Rohtak, 10 km from their village, and were in a relationship for almost three years. When both went missing on Tuesday, Nidhi’s family got in touch with her and persuaded them to return home, with the promise that they would not be harmed. As they returned on Wednesday, Nidhi’s family took them to their house and killed them.
Her family rushed to cremate Nidhi’s body, but Kalanaur SHO Ramesh Kumar reached the spot with a police party and recovered the half-burnt body, which along with Dharmendra’s, was sent for autopsy. Nidhi’s family, which runs a thriving dog-breeding business, is said to wield major influence in the region. Dharmendra’s family is into farming.
The families, of the same “gotra,” told the police that the couple eloped on Tuesday to get married in Delhi, 90 km away.
The brutal killing is yet another reminder of the power “khap panchayats” wield, issuing diktats against marriages within the same ‘gotra’ (clan) and in the same village or even ‘bhaichara’ (brotherhood). In Haryana, there have been numerous cases of couples having defied the Khap diktat and paid the price with their lives.
Last year, the Supreme Court asked its amicus curiae as well as the State governments to devise a legal regime that could prevent “Taliban-like groups” from inciting executions of couples of the same “gotras.” NGO Shakti Vahini had petitioned the court for intervention against extra-judicial killings in the name of community honour, and for holding “khap” members accountable for such crimes. In 2011, the court ruled that “honour killings” came under the category of the “rarest of rare” cases and those indulging in such crimes should be awarded death penalty
As in the past, mindful of the influence of the “khaps” in politics, most of the parties, especially the ruling Congress and the Indian National Lok Dal, have avoided comments on the Rohtak killing. However, Haryana Janhit Congress chief Kuldip Bishnoi has condemned the incident.
Savita, secretary of the All-India Democratic Women’s Association in Haryana, said the State, which had recorded dozens of such killings, had done nothing to curb the crime. Reiterating the AIDWA’s demand for separate legislation against honour killings, she pointed out that a memorandum containing over one lakh signatures was submitted to the Union Law Minister a few months ago, along with draft legislation. However, the draft was not tabled in Parliament owing to opposition from the Haryana government and pressure from the “khaps.”

North India, (Haryana/UttarPardesh) areas have one of the highest honour killings rates in the world and most are done by hindu and sikh families, not muslims

Someone (a non-Indian) once told me if South India declared independence in a few years they would become as developed as some of the rich east Asian countries e.g. Singapore, Taiwan etc.

          The north is backwards.

Bengal was the richest part of India.

This is why the British sought to take it over first.

Bengal was the capital of India i.e. Calcutta.

Bengal is a fertile delta between the Ganges valley (Hindustan) and China and was always rich, which is why there is such a large population.

The British deliberately impoverished Bengal through land reforms and played divide and rule between Muslims and Hindus there. This is why Bengal is in the state that is in now.

However Bengal will, insha'Allah, revert to its usual status as a wealthy region and this process is taking place in east Bengal (Bangladesh) though not west Bengal (India) which is run by leftists/Maoists.

              Though Bengalis dominate Indian football.

lol funny how you all call them backward and uneducated, but when the same honor killing would happen in Afghanistan you would all claim that they deserve it and that it is just our Pashtun culture -_-

I didn't want to go in to much detail because the topic is different and not about the Bangladeshi economy but some points.

                        1. Sri Lanka has the ability to become the first, 1st world state in South Asia and is ahead of Bangladesh or India in many things.

                        2. The Bangladeshi economy is the 5th fastest growing economy in the world from 2008 (i.e. if you count from 2008-2013) alongside China, Turkey, Brazil and Singapore.

                        3. Our growth rate has increased by 1% each decade since independence i.e. 3% in the 80s, 4% in the 90s, 5% in the 2000s and now 6-7% in the 2010s.

We are aiming to get 8% and then ultimately 10%.

The way economics works is this.

An economy is for example $20 billion it has 10% growth then that means the economy has grown to $22 billion.

That is an increase of $2 billion.

The next year it grows by 10% again but that doesn't mean another additional $2 billion, addded but $2.2 billion i.e. $24.2 billion.

                        4. Our foreign reserves are three times greater than that of Pakistan's showing our financial discipline and stability unlike Pakistan which has to go to the IMF for support.

                        5. Building consumer items such as bikes, fridges are important in that they show manufacturing ability, increased industrialization and Bangladeshi manufacturing is increasing with the production of ships, some ship deals with European countries have been for $100 million.

Meghnaghat-based Ananda Shipyards said it signed agreements worth around $180 million while Chittagong-based Western Marine put its total orders to more than $70 million...

"If we can grab one per cent of the global order for small ships, the amount will be worth $4.0 billion. The global market for small ships is now about $400 billion," said Shakhawat Hossain, managing director of Western Marine. ..

The focus on Bangladesh came in April last year when Ananda signed deals worth around $100 million with two German shipping companies to build eight vessels with capacity for 325 containers by June 2010.

Bangladesh Sept exports soar 36 pct on garment sales

                        DHAKA | Wed Oct 9, 2013 6:28am EDT

Oct 9 (Reuters) - Bangladesh's exports rose 36.26 percent in September from a year earlier to $2.59 billion, boosted by stronger clothing sales, an export body said on Thursday, despite a spate of deadly accidents which have hit the country's multi-billion textile industry.

In the first quarter of the current financial year exports rose 21 percent to $7.63 billion from a year earlier, the Export Promotion Bureau said. Garments exports surged 24 percent to $6.2 billion in July-September.

Garment exports totalled $21.5 billion for the financial year that ended in June 2013, up 13 percent from a year earlier when total exports rose 11 percent to more than $27 billion.
Bangladesh Sept exports soar 36 pct on garment sales | Reuters

We are the world's no.2 garment exporters after China which a while ago had around 8 times more garments exports than us, we were at $15 bn they were at $120 bn

However their labour costs are rising and they may shift manufacturing to us which means we could get some of their current $150 bn.

We were on $15 bn, them on $120 bn, 8 times difference.

Now we are on $21.5 bn, they are on 150 bn, 6.9 times difference.

The difference will only narrow and we will get a bigger share of the Chinese garments export.

                        7. The CPC (Communist Party of China) is said to take 1 million Chinese out of poverty per month and they have industrialized huge parts of south-eastern China which are more developed than much of the EU (e.g. Greece, southern Italy, Spain, Portugal, Ireland).

The Bangladeshi land mass is far smaller and compact and it is far easier to replicate the Chinese success in Bangladesh which territory-wise would be half the size of a small province in China.

                        Shanghai.

Train station in China. China's rail network can be replicated in far smaller Bangladesh.

                        8. We are also geographically between 3 big markets.

                        a: China, 1 billion +
                        b: India, 1 billion +
                        c: Asean, 0.6 billion

so let's 3 billion (as China and India are both a few hundred million above 1 billion), that is around 42% of the world's population.

That is not including Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Nepal, Bhutan etc.

The problem with the above scenario is that India practises de facto protectionism. It signs treaties on free trade with us and basically nullifies them by citing technical difficulties.

China is far more honest and freer in terms of trade.

China and India have set a trade target of $100 billion by 2015 (around 15+ months time).

The other thing about the Bangladeshi economy is that investment is primarily local from Bangladeshi businessmen and not foreigners.

Gulf Arabs for example do not invest in Bangladesh and do not seem to like us to be honest. That is good as our growth will be independent of that region.

I could go on and give many other facts, but the biggest problem that Bangladesh faces is the dysfunctional political scene, in fact the current parliament expires in 12 days time and some fear mini-civil war as this government is refusing to hand power to an interim caretaker government to run the country during elections. It's complicated but hopefully the Bangladeshi military will have a quite word with Hasina.

There are many things I have missed out in this short summary.
