Turkey lifts decades-old ban on headscarves - Europe - Al Jazeera English

Turkey has lifted a decades-old ban on headscarves in the civil service as part of a package of reforms by the government meant to improve democracy.

Tuesday's measure was hailed by Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, whose wife wears a headscarf, as a "step toward normalisation" and came into effect after it was published in the official gazette.

"We have now abolished an archaic provision which was against the spirit of the republic. It's a step toward normalisation," Erdogan said in a parliamentary speech to his ruling party lawmakers.

"A dark time eventually comes to an end," he said. "Headscarf-wearing women are full members of the republic, as well as those who do not wear it."

The ban, whose roots date back almost 90 years to the early days of the Turkish Republic, has kept many women from joining the public work force.

Critics accuse Erdogan of lifting the ban to force his Islamic values on the majority Muslim but staunchly secular nation.

When plans to remove the ban were first announced last week, the main opposition party labelled it "a serious blow to the secular republic" created by modern Turkey's founding father Mustafa Kemal Ataturk in 1923.

    Limited ban remains

Erdogan last week unveiled a package of democratic reforms mostly aimed at improving rights for minority Kurds, but he also used the opportunity to take on the highly controversial headscarf ban.

Female civil servants are now allowed to wear headscarves, while their male counterparts can sport beards. However, the ban remains in place for judges, prosecutors, police and military personnel.

Erdogan's ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) pledged to remove the ban on the wearing of headscarves in all domains when it came to power in 2002. It has already relaxed the ban at universities.

The highly charged debate lies at the heart of Turkey's divisions between religious conservatives, who form the bulk of Erdogan's AKP supporters, and more secular members of society.

In 1999, Turkish-American lawmaker Merve Kavakci arrived in parliament wearing a headscarf for her swearing-in ceremony. She was booed out of the house and had her Turkish citizenship revoked.

In stark contrast, a day after Erdogan's announcement of reforms, President Abdullah Gul's wife wore her headscarf to parliament.
There are people today who think that admitting God’s absolute greatness decreases the value and importance of humans in the creation, as if God and mankind are rivals competing in greatness and power. Meanwhile I feel that whenever our perception of God’s greatness increases, with it we become greater, because we are the creation of a great God.

    Alhamdulilah, good news.

Such a thing would have been unthinkable a few years ago and could have provoked a military coup.

Now it is passed with little outcry.

It means the future of Turkey is that of Somalia, Sudan, Iran and Afghanistan far away from Europe. Such reforms will plunge Turkey into abyss of radicalism, bigotry and mixing religion with culture and politics.

Why headscarves or a especial dress only for women? Dress is as per body and environment. Headscarves are chains in the necks of women.

Another example of using religion to get political margin. Why they do not focus only on further development and education instead of such absurd reforms and dividing the society and bringing social strife.

Turkey's economic boom happened during the Islamist regime. It means the future of Turkey is Islam and secularism will just become an embarrassing relic of the past. Turkey is not forcing women to wear headscarves, they're ALLOWING women the choice to do so. Turkey is doing fine when it comes to development; all they did was lift a ban. Good for them.

It's because Turkish leaders are doing the smart thingl; they're using the Secular Cloak to appease the secularists but slowly transforming Turkey back into an Islamic society.

I told Badlun this and he did not believe me, now he's starting to panic

economically they were closer to the countries you mentioned when secularists were in power.

lol @ you comparing the granting of women the freedom of choice to radicalism and calling it an absurd reform. under muslims, turkey is now an economic power and the war with the kurds is close to an end, i know this pains you.

Do you think this boom is only because of the so called Islamism? The secular Turkey has nothing to do with that?

Do you think in Turkey there is real Islamism as that of Taliban or Ikhwans?

If Islamism or Islam is the future of Turkey then where Islam/islamism is already the past and present of so many countries like Afghanistan , why Islam did not deliver there that it will now deliver in Turkey?

Dress has nothing to do with religion or government and it is an individual choice according to climate, situation, environment and with whom you are interacting. Dress in bedroom is not the same what you have at a beach and what you have in an office. How a woman can enjoy a beach with a headscarf? Or women cannot swim and bathe in rivers and seas?

Badlun they have not made obligatory the scarves but they given a choice. Are you mentally ok ? This was your secularists who had banned on scarf and imposed their decision on majority of the people. This president has not imposed anything. Still you are not happy. It means that you are not against just taliban but actually your against the values of islam.

Well secular Turkey was in economic depression so yes I believe there is some connection; Secular Turkey was spineless and just wanted to be slave of Europe. Islamst ruled Turkey has more dignity and self respect; it is more inclusive of Kurds and minorities. This is why Nationalism is stupid; it leads to ethnic prejudice. Turkey is using the gradual approach; making subtle changes. Which is good. The main Turkish Islamic Party are a branch of Ikhwan Al Muslimeen so yes they're Ikhwan. Taliban are not actually Islamist; they're mixture of Pashtunwali and Pakistani Deobandi ideas. They take the Woman Hatred from Pashtunwali and the narrow interpretations from Pakistani Deobandis. Real Islamists are Modernists; they see the fusion of Science and Technology with the Islamic Methods of Social Governing; like Jamaluddin Al Afghani; the Ikhwan Al Muslimeen is Islamist.

The problem in Afghanistan is Pashtun thinking and culture; it is backwards and corrupt. So that is what failed in Afghanistan. Islam is fine and works properly But when Pashtuns mix their culture with everything that is what ruins things because Pashtun culture is very hateful towards women and sees women as property of men rather than people who can contribute in society. They think women can be traded off like cattle. This is against Islam. In the original days of Islam women used to define the prices at the market and even were teachers. If you believe dress has nothing to do with government then you should be happy that Turkey stopped the ban on women who wear headscarves because that should not be their concern. As for Islam, Clothing is not the most important part of Islam; but dress and how is the proper way to dress is apart of Islamic teaching, even if it is something which has low degree of priority.

How women can enjoy a beach with headscarf? Easy just walk on the sand look at the ocean during the sunset. I see women in headscarves do this all the time with their families. What do you think enjoying a beach is? walking around naked? lol

This is why your secularism will fail ; you don't use logical thinking.

Even the Karzai Government is not secular since they legislate based on Shari'ah. The problem with them is they're a puppet regime.

Yes it seems there is some problem with him. He never condemned when the secularists banned scarves against the choice of Turkish women but now when the president giving choice to the women now Bdlun has got some problem. Is it a symptom of some nervious breakdown. I dont know.
