Regarding two agreements with the US, Cabinet Secretary Mohammad Mosharraf Hossain Bhuiyan said in a briefing after the cabinet meeting that Bangladesh and the US have been trying to sign the two treaties for a long time. It took long time to finalise the agreements because of thorough examinations.
The Bangladesh US Counter Terrorism Cooperation Initiative will be an official document, but it would not be considered legally binding.
“If the agreement is signed, the cooperation between the two countries on resisting terrorism, exchanging technologies and information and cooperation will be strengthened. It will play an effective role in getting legal aid for catching money laundering in the country,” he added.
The cabinet secretary said if the Memorandum of Cooperation between Ministry of Home Affairs of Bangladesh and United States Drug Enforcement Administration for Mutual Cooperation in the Sphere of Drug Control is signed, it would help the government to get assistance from the US on preventing the misuse of drugs and strengthening cooperation on investigations.
“The cabinet also approved the proposal of ratify the extradition treaty between Bangladesh and India, which was signed in last January in Dhaka. After ratifying the treaty in the Bangladesh cabinet, it will be effective soon, as the Indian cabinet already ratified the treaty,” said Bhuiyan.
He said the home ministers of Bangladesh and India had signed the extradition treaty last January. But according to protocol, it had to be ratified by the cabinets of both countries before becoming effective.
“According to the treaty, the two countries would be able to exchange criminals or prisoners who are convicted for more than one year, when requested. But it would not be applicable for prisoners who have political involvement. The countries would retain the authority to deny requests in such cases,” the cabinet secretary said.
