India begins electricity export to Bangladesh

    PTI | Oct 5, 2013, 05.07PM IST
DHAKA: Indo-Bangla cooperation in the power sector on Saturday entered a new phase, with the two countries breaking ground for a 1,320-MW coal-fired power plant and inaugurating a joint transmission line that will export 500 MW from India.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh joined the inauguration of the cross-country transmission line and the laying of the foundation stone for the Maitri Thermal Power Project through video conferencing, while his Bangladeshi counterpart Sheikh Hasina was present at a sub-station in western Bheramara, about 240 km from here.

"Today's inauguration represents an important milestone in connecting our two countries and the broader region through a growing wave of cross-border energy links and trade," Singh said.

These initiatives will strengthen the bonds of friendship between India and Bangladesh and add a rich dimension to bilateral relations, he said.

Hasina, who was joined by India's New and Renewable Energy Minister Farooq Abdullah at the sub-station, said, "Such cooperation would pave the way to embark on more ambitious projects to the benefit of both the countries.

"The inter-grid connectivity is part of an immediate solution which would go a long way to alleviate the power deficit in Bangladesh."

The formal opening of the joint transmission line came a week after India launched a test transmission of electricity under an agreement to export 250 MW to its energy-starved neighbour.

The inauguration began with the supply of 175 MW from India to Bangladesh's National Grid and officials said the agreed quantum would start coming from next month.

Bangladesh will import 250 MW from the Indian government's "unallocated quota" and another 250 MW will be supplied by an Indian private firm.

The groundbreaking for Bangladesh's biggest-ever joint venture coal-run power project came against the backdrop of protests by environmentalists, who fear that the project near the Sundarbans, also shared by India, would endanger the world's largest mangrove forest.

      1. The Bangladesh-Indian border is the 5th longest border in the world and unarmed Bangladeshi civilians are regularly murdered by Indian border guards.

      2. India is a bully which seeks to:

      a - Destabilize Bangladesh.
b - Create problems for Bangladesh in terms of water resources (parts of Bangladesh have actually become partially desertified due to India).
c - Promotes lies about Bangladesh in the international media.
d - interferes in Bangladeshi politics as mentioned by the "Economist" magazine.
e- Regularly signs treaties with false promises, which the Bangladeshi side honours and the Indian side doesn't.

India is a bully and the only way to deal with the thugs and bullies of New Delhi is for Bangladesh to become stronger. We need to develop our military at a faster pace and in the long term consider developing nuclear weapons to counter the Indian regimes own nuclear arsenal.

If India does not behave itself and reign in its aggressive and deceitful nature it will face severe consequences.

you are exactly going pakistan's way if you think like that, India maybe a bully because of it's size and influence, but it is better to work for peace in the region then to look for war.

also not sure what is with this India vs Bangladesh rivalry, there is no reason for you to be rivals with them, at least with Pakistan they have old rivalry from the beginning, but with you it doesn't make sense. If I were you, I would work along with India to make the country better. They can help you in a lot of areas

            1. We are not Pakistanis and do not have some false belief that we "are a Ghazi nation" whose "historic destiny" is to conquer "Hindu India".

This type of belief is dentrimental to Pakistan.

            2. However neither can we be walkovers and India is causing a lot of problems for Bangladesh and making a lot of mischief, which even western papers such as the Economist have stated.

You are not that informed about Bangladesh-India affairs so like most of the posters here would presumably think that they are fine, far from it. India is disliked in Bangladesh for many of its policies.

The ideal solution is for mutual respect and co-operation and to optimize trade, however New Delhi does not seem to be interested in that.

We must arm ourselves, develop our ballistic arsenal and consider nuclear weapons.

India will only respect strength, otherwise it will continue bullying and causing trouble.

However this would be done in a wise manner and not with the extreme hatred of Hindus and all-things Indian that Pakistani nationalists have.

If India behaves then we will be friends, if not we won't. Simple as that.
