PALEMBANG, INDONESIA (AFP) – The Islamic Solidarity Games got under way in Indonesia on Sunday despite a chaotic run-up to the event and debates over appropriate outfits for Muslim athletes.

More than 1,800 athletes from 46 Muslim-populated countries are taking part in the games in the world's most populous Muslim country, organisers said.

"Let's put aside our political burden," Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said in the opening ceremony, as he paid particular tribute to the Egyptian, Syrian and Palestinian delegations attending the event.

"Through this event, let's prove to the world that Islamic countries can live in unity and harmony," he said.

The opening ceremony in Palembang, a city on Sumatra island, was modest, reflecting the lack of funding for the event.

Local organisers said they had yet to receive any cash from the central government.

"It's scary. The funding has not been disbursed until now, we are asking left and right for support so the event can go ahead as planned," Djoko Pramono, a senior organising committee member, told AFP.

The event, which will continue until October 1, has faced a string of other problems including two changes of venue.

It was moved from Riau in Sumatra to the capital Jakarta, only to be shifted to Palembang after Sumatran officials complained.

Organisers had less than two months to move everything to the new venue.

The games were first held last year in Saudi Arabia, where bikinis were banned, men and women had to compete on separate days and men were barred from watching women swim.

However, the Indonesian organisers have ruled out such restrictions. They also rejected requests by some countries to stage male and female events on separate days.

"We have said since last year that we are going to follow international rules, not Muslim rules," Pramono said.

"We are giving the athletes the full freedom to wear whatever they want. If they want to wear the burqa or headscarf for beach volley, please go ahead, we will not ban them," Pramono added.

Rita Subowo, the head of Indonesia's Olympics Committee, told AFP that the Indonesian beach volleyball team would wear two-piece costumes for ease of movement and because such outfits were approved by the International Olympic Committee.

The games started with basketball and soccer, and 11 other sports will begin in the coming days.

Eyebrows have been raised over the Palembang complex itself, where parts of the ill-fated 2011 Southeast Asian Games took place.

Some facilities were not fully constructed when the 2011 event opened and scores of athletes suffered food poisoning there.

During the 2011 games two football fans were crushed to death in a stampede at a venue.

But Pramono remained optimistic about the Islamic games, which bring together member nations from the Organisation of the Islamic Conference.

Games are not Islamic or unislamic. What a ridiculous word..Islamic Games...
Games has nothing to do with religion or Islam. Games need practice, preparation, physique, sportsman spirit, teams, grounds, balls, rackets, nutrition, tournaments, competitions, ambition, struggle, hard work not religion.

There are many Non Muslims in Indonesia and other Muslim countries so they will be not allowed to play. whether documents or beard size will be checked that who is Muslim who is not to play?

As you can see some here who are always insulting Muslims and promoting a narrative of "Pashtun = extremist/backward, Punjabi = good/civilized" are unhappy with even something as peaceful and non-threatening as this event.

I am not against games. I am not against Muslims to play but I am against calling games Islamic or unIslamic. Games have nothing to do with religion. Sports stadiums are not mosques or Makkah where non Muslims cannot enter.

Please read the post again and you will find many issues like

a chaotic run-up to the event and debates over appropriate outfits for Muslim athletes.

Do you see when you mix religion in non religious stuff like games. How can a salafi woman will play with full covered face?

People have all sorts of society's and groups where they engage in some sort of activity or event i.e Euro Football Cup for instance which has rules, one of the rules is you have to be European to enter, if you can restrict memberships based on nationality then why mot restrict according to religion. Dont be so butthurt Badlun, you dont need to stress yourself by digging deep into the hardships of the event, it's happening whether you like it or not, just think of it as Muslims having our own little get together and family event, just how we all have our own private family events I hope this opens new gateways into Muslims working with each other on other grounds not just sports.

Indonesia is one of them most rapidly advancing Muslim countries. In terms of sport they now have a new female grandmaster.

              Medina is Indonesia’s
              latest grandmaster

The Indonesian chess community’s dream of having a second women’s grandmaster (WGM) has materialized after WIM (women’s international master) Medina Warda Aulia defeated FM (FIDE master) Lanita Stetsko of Belarus at the World Junior Chess Championship in Kocaeli, Turkey, on Monday.

The total score of seven points from 10 of 13 rounds earned Medina her third WGM norm after she recorded her first and second norms in Singapore in 2011 and Russia in 2012.

A chess player has to book a set of three WGM norms for a full WGM title, as required by the international chess authority FIDE.

“She has played opponents with a ratings average of 2266. On the Direct Titles table issued by FIDE on July 1, a player scoring seven points is entitled to WGM norm if their opponents have a rating average between 2251 and 2289,” team manager Kristianus Liem said in a press release on Tuesday.

“Medina has met the other requirements that at least four opponents hold a WGM title, six are titled and eight are rated,” he said.

Kristianus said that Medina would also augment her rating by 24 points next month from her current rating of 2301.

Stetsko was the sixth player Medina defeated in the tournament. The five others were Ani Krumova, Ivana Maria Furtado, Maria Bezgodova, Aleksandra Goryachkina and Alina Kashlinskaya.

There are clubs, teams by the name of world, continent, country, city even village. It makes no difference but mixing religion with everything causes issues as we see above about the dress, the gender , separate play grounds, separate spectators etc.

If we make religion limited to spirituality, morality, worships and faith then religion will have its own place and sectors like sports its own. Religion does not have the capacity, scope and domain to govern every aspect of our life including sports.

Ovcourse it does, there were issues but the bottom line is that its happening, so this debunks your theory of it not being possible.

Muslims peacefully coming together and celebrating their commonality based on faith seems to annoy some people.

Will you see a Pashtun or a Muslim woman woman like this in Islamic games and no body will object her?

Will Islamism allow Muslim women swimming and athletics and men watching

If yes I have no problems with Islamic games.

There should also be Christian, Buddhist, Hindu and Sikh games also.

This is for the second time in 1400 years such an event and I don't think it will be repeated in coming years. If repeated will never attain the level of other international competitions.
PLEASE SHARE THE NEWS IN THIS REGARD
No doubt the same players may perform super in other competitions like Olympics.

badlun, why would you think that people who are in favor of these islamic games would be opposed to a christian/hindu/whatever games? they can do whatever they want as far as i am concerned.

i find it suspicious that instead of applauding muslims coming together in a positive manner to play sports, you want to cause fitna by asking about "islamism" and dress codes. if there is no such fitna at these games, why would you start one here? its like you want there to be controversy.
There are people today who think that admitting God’s absolute greatness decreases the value and importance of humans in the creation, as if God and mankind are rivals competing in greatness and power. Meanwhile I feel that whenever our perception of God’s greatness increases, with it we become greater, because we are the creation of a great God.

As the old saying "time will tell", people cannot hide their agendas for too long, true colours come out in the end, his frustration is oozing out and blowing his cover.
