Egypt is facing a new Islamist insurgency

Suicide bombings in Sinai and an assassination attempt on the interior minister are a sign that Egypt is facing a growing threat from Islamic extremists, and the violent crackdown on the Muslim Brotherhood can only make things worse.

By Sophie McBain Published 12 September 2013 13:48
Yesterday six soldiers were killed in a double suicide bomb attack in Sinai and ten soldiers and seven civilians were killed in Rafah, near the Israel border, by bomb blasts. Less than a week earlier, on 5 September, Egypt’s interior minister, Mohammed Ibrahim, survived a bomb attack on his convoy in Cairo. A Sinai-based al-Qaeda inspired group later claimed responsibility for the assassination attempt.
If there’s anything unexpected about this increase in violence against government targets, it’s that it has taken so little time for militant groups to strike beyond their Sinai-stronghold and organise attacks in the capital. When the Egyptian military began its heavy-handed and short-sighted crackdown on the Muslim Brotherhood last month, it could only expect a violent response from the extremist wings of Egypt’s Islamist movements. It’s worth remembering that the Salafists initially welcomed the removal of the Muslim Brotherhood in power, it was the army’s brutality that changed their attitude.
The Egyptian government should also expect that a new generation of Islamists will be radicalised and turn to violent confrontation, because the message the military has sent to the Muslim Brotherhood, its supporters and other Islamists is very clear: there’s no place for you in government and your vote doesn’t, and won’t ever, count.
I don’t say this because I support the Muslim Brotherhood. Egypt’s ousted, and now jailed, Muslim Brotherhood president Mohammed Morsi showed alarmingly authoritarian tendencies. I understand why liberals, women and Christian minorities worried for their future under an Islamic government, and why many early supporters of the Muslim Brotherhood grew disillusioned. But by killing over 600 protesters on 14th August, arresting thousands of Muslim Brotherhood supporters and shutting down Muslim Brotherhood newspapers and TV stations, Egypt’s interim government has shown little patience for peaceful dialogue, and a concerning disregard for democratic norms.
Violence often breeds violence, and now Egypt faces the prospect of a return to the 1990s, when the military government faced a low-level Islamic insurgency focussed in Sinai. The difference is that Islamist insurgents will now benefit from greater instability in the region, and a ready supply of arms from neighbouring Libya. The present leader of al-Qaeda, Ayman al-Zawahiri, was a member of the Brotherhood who became involved in international jihad as a response to state repression in the 50s and 60s. Egypt should beware its disenfranchised and disillusioned Islamist youth.

I never teach. I only share. I am a participant and facilitator not teacher. I learn and share.

Here the issue is insurgency of Islamists and violence of Ikhwans not secularism. I am against the name of Ikhwanul Muslimeen(Muslim Brotherhood). It should be Ikhwanul Misr(Egyptian Brotherhood) and then there will be no problem. Muslims are divided in 58 states and every state would take its own care.

How Ikhwans can take care of all the Muslims of the world and ignoring its own 15 -20% non Muslim population and many secularists .

My main point is that any religion including Islam is not fit for politics. Its domain and scope are limited to faith, spirituality and ethics nothing beyond that.

This argument of yours has been debunked several times in the past by other members. Believe what you want to believe but don't make up lies against Islam by saying that it is limited to so and so when according to the scripture itself, that is absolutely not true.
There are people today who think that admitting God’s absolute greatness decreases the value and importance of humans in the creation, as if God and mankind are rivals competing in greatness and power. Meanwhile I feel that whenever our perception of God’s greatness increases, with it we become greater, because we are the creation of a great God.

Rtr, Barakzai and others who have way more patience and knowledge then me have castrated him in arguments of his perspective of Islamic theology.

If you are judging things based on "standard of life" then what are you doing on a Pashtun forum? Pashtuns are among the poorest people on Earth, we must be like **** to you since you covet the finer things in life. Why are you playing nationalist when your nation of people are dirt poor and have the "standard of life" of a homeless westerner? You are obviously proud of your links to Khost but Khost is a piece of crap if you look at it through the same lense that you look at Islam.

I am judging things on how they are and how they perform. I am not judging things by a fantasy and thinking how it can be. Islamic goverment is failed everywhere be it in Iran, talibans scharia in Afghanistan or the Sharia of Saudi. But when we talk about this examples, you peopel calaim " oh this is not the true Islam and bla bla", what is true Islam? Why in this hunderds of years no country have implemented a true sharia goverment? Even when most of the middel east was far more advanced than europe, it is now one of the backward places on earth? Despite having world bigest oil reserves. Why muslims are so eager to get those kafir pasports and live in this kafir lands? And not in some Islamic country?

And by the way Khost can be crap now, but at least peopel are doing there best to make the best of it and improve, thats not the case whith your peopel who have an utopian and absured world vieuw. Full of fantasy and what not....

Not to mention the fact that MOST of the world is Secular; Most of Africa is secular, South America is Secular, South East Asia is Secular, Even most of Eastern Europe is secular. Liberia, Rwanda and most of those West African countries were secular and have been embroiled in war even till this day. In that has had more people die than Afghanistan 3 times over; each of their wars were wars promoted by Nationalists and Secularists. The only reason people ignore these countries is because they're black. But that is evidence that secularism does not mean prosperity.

If you tabulate them all up, then it is mostly secular societies amongst the poorest in the world. Afghanistan is poor yes; but much of the current stage of Afghanistan is a byproduct of secular interventions.

So even by Khostai's own standards; secular states tend to be much worse than ; which means there is more at work than merely if a country is secular or not. It has to do with the country's historical connection with Imperialism. Using America, Britain, france, Holand, or Germany as examples; all who have benefited from imperialism. is a bad example.

But the thing is secularism has failed in Afghanistan IT's A PROVEN failure; the fact it "works in America" is not evidence it can work for Afghanistan.

Indeed the Taliban have failed; BUT Shari'ah is not doomed to fail in Afghanistan because MOST Afghans still believe in Islam as the central foundation of how to rule their society.

BARELY ANYONE believes secularism is even a REMOTE alternative. Shari'ah is still a prominent desire for people in Afghanistan; that demonstrates it hasn't faiiled. Taliban has failed but not Shari'ah. But secularism; Both the Secularists have failed and Secularism as failed as only Western Indoctrinates will advocate secularism and they're not even 1% of the society.

Religion is emotion, belief, sentiment, promises in the hereafter so people die for it. Secularism is the way of rational people so they instead of death will prefer to live for secularism not die for it.

Why this Shariat is only sought in Afghanistan or only by Taliban why not in other countries and especially by developed world if it is something this much superb.

No one including Barakzai or RTR refuted my argument. My one argument is that there is no success story of Shariat any where in the last 1400 years. Democracy and secularism have hundreds of years of success in many countries. Even the time of Abubakar , Umar , Usman and Ali had its problems. Their only success was expansion by military strenght.

In Africa when the democracy, secularism and development go together then there is success. Botswana, Gambia, Senegal are some of the emerging countries there. Main problem of Africa is dictatorships and military rules.

There is an emotional component to religion; but Legal Methodology; order, organizational structure in religion demonstrates that it is not merely sentimental and that there is a strong degree of rationality to it as well. And The fact that Secular societies sanction irratiional behavior and more over have done irrational things; demonstrates that secularism is not for irrational people Look what Russia did in Afghanistan; this is clear evidence secularism is not rational.

Why this Shariat is only sought in Afghanistan or only by Taliban why not in other countries and especially by developed world if it is something this much superb.
Because they're a different culture altogether; the West has a culture meant for secularism; Secularism is a European cultural practice That's why it can't work for Muslims.

No one including Barakzai or RTR refuted my argument. My one argument is that there is no success story of Shariat any where in the last 1400 years. I always show the flaw and incorrectness of your arguments with logical analysis; So this is refuting you. If you ignore it; it is simply living in denial. The only success stories of secularism are the former Imperialist nations and their byproducts; every other secularist country is poor, destitute and exploited by the wealthy imperialist nations. This is not success this is failure. Secular countries in Afrrica are murdering each other for Nationalism; Children are made slaves to dig diamonds for Secular Warlords. All demonstrates that Secularism is an illusion; only success is by people who can exploit Secularism.

If you define success/failure by existence of problems then secularism would fail too; since there are problems in secular countries as well. If you define success by standard of living. the We can refer to Golden Age of Islam as proof of Shari'a's success. The problem is you change the criteria by which you evaluate the issue so you avoid any evidence of Shari'ah as success. But any standard you choose we have examples where you're wrong.

In Africa when the democracy, secularism and development go together then there is success. Botswana, Gambia, Senegal are some of the emerging countries there. Main problem of Africa is dictatorships and military rules.
Those are terrible examples; because Senegal is one of the poorest countries in the world; and their GDP has declined; so that is a Secular failure. Gambia is also devastatingly poor; Only arguable benefit is Botswana but they're not better because of secularism but because of Diamonds. So really you have not shown secularisms benefit for most of the World and it remains a fact Most secular countries are destitute.

I didn't read what that desperate desert camel has to say. But bringing up Africa, a continet that was totaly merginalized and plundert by colonist is somehow an example for the world. And even if it failed there, that means the peopel failed it themselfs, not becuase of the systme, there are good examples of secular democratic nations in Asia and South Areica and even some other African countries where it is working just fine. Look at muslim states, that says more than enough. And where is the fine example of wel functioning Sharia based Islamic state?

Secularism and Democraty will be the norm, even if you sand niggahs worshippers like it or not
