Burma violence: Rioters burn Muslim homes and shops

Rioters have burnt Muslim-owned houses and shops in an outbreak of apparent sectarian violence in Burma (also known as Myanmar).
The trouble broke out overnight around the central town of Kanbalu, when police refused to hand over a Muslim man accused of raping a Buddhist woman.
It is the latest in a series of attacks on the Muslim community that police have failed to control.
The state government has sent reinforcements to the area.
The violence is a stark reminder of how much anti-Muslim sentiment there is in Myanmar and how little the authorities are doing to contain it, says the BBC's Jonathan Head in Bangkok.
Earlier this week, a car carrying UN human rights rapporteur Tomas Ojea Quintana was attacked by a crowd in the central town of Meiktila as he tried to investigate sectarian attacks there in March.
He has accused the country's government of failing to protect him when his convoy came under attack as some 200 people surrounded his car, punching the doors and windows.
Thousands of Muslims were left homeless after the clashes in Meiktila
At least 43 people - most of them from Burma's small Muslim community - died in the violence that erupted after an argument at a Muslim-owned shop.
The violence sparked clashes in at least three other towns and left more than 12,000 Muslims displaced.
The clashes in Meiktila were the worst since ethnic violence in Rakhine state last year, where nearly 200 people were killed and tens of thousands forced from their homes.
The conflict that erupted in Rakhine involved Buddhists and Rohingya Muslims, who are not recognised as Burmese citizens.
The communities remain largely segregated in the wake of the violence, with many displaced Rohingya Muslims living in tents or temporary camps.

This is really pathetic. Buddhists who are known for being pacifist are brutally killing innocent Muslims in Myanmar(Burma). We all must condemn it.

As far as I know Burmese Muslims are peaceful Muslims. They are not Islamists or having any influence of Wahabism, Salafism or Al Qaeda. Then why they are being tortured?

I do not know if there is any connection between Rohingyas and Rohilas. Rohilas are Pashtuns.

1. Rohilas are from Bihar as far as I know and have descendants in Guyana. There is no connection.

2. Rohingyas are on the whole Indic Muslims who speak a language similar to the Chittagongi dialect of Bangla in Bangladesh, however in that community are people of Arab, Mongoloid and even Pashtun blood.

3. The conflict in Burma is an ethnic one.

Burma like Pakistan consists of many ethnicities, the majority ethnicity are the Bamars, who run the army.

The Bamar army has destroyed around 50 churches, raped Christian women, are at war with the mainly Christian Kachins and they also bombed a Buddhist temple recently belonging to the Shan, another Mongoloid Buddhist ethnic group.

The Bamars hate Indic-looking people too and expelled Indic Hindus from their country in the past.

The Rohingyas are just one group in their long hate-list.

However there are around 2-4 million Chinese (not sure of exact numbers) in the country who have huge economic power including in the important city of Mandalay, so whilst the Bamars can massacre, rape and oppress other ethnicities they cannot dare lay a finger on the Chinese.

1. Rohillas belong to the Pashtun diaspora. They are fiercely independent minded and are a warrior people.

2. Rohingyas are Arabs or semi-Arabs originally. Obviously there has been mixing with Bengalee Muslim blood during centuries of existence.

3. The Burmans look at all other races as inferior. The Muslims are called "kalla" or a despised outsider. Rohingyas being Muslim are thus hated and not recognized even as 3rd class citizens. Btw, in Burma, officially the Burmans are 1st class citizens. Others are 2nd class. Recently the Chinese have been able to obtain a 2nd class nationality - which is a recognition of their existence no doubt.

4. Pre-1948, the SA people used to dominate Burma's economy. Now the Chinese do although Burmese Muslims are good in Yangon itself. (The Burmese Muslims are different from the Rohingyas.)

It means the isue is ethnic not religious?

But do Rohingyas have any kind of citizenship of Mayanmar or they are stateless people.
Why Bangladesh does not cater for them to invite them to be citizens of Bangladesh. I have heard that Rohingyas want Bangladeshi citizenship.

One question off the topic
Will you please elaborate that what Bangladeshi people feel for Indian Bengalis. Is there any kind of brotherhood between them being of the same ethnic stock or religion separated them totally as religion separated Muslim rajpoots, jats and other Punjabis from Indian Punjabis.

1. It is primarily ethnic than religious. Bamars do not like non-Bamars.

2. The Burmese goal is to expel all Rohingyas from Arakan, so if Bangladesh takes all of them they have de facto realized Burmese ethnic cleaning i.e. a non-Muslim Arakan.

3. The Burmese have already expelled half of all Rohingyas in the past few decades. Bangladesh hosts between half a million to million of them.

Saudi Arabia also hosts hundreds of thousands.

4. The stupid Bangladeshi regimes should have supported a Rohingya resistance group and made a statelet like the other rebel groups have done e.g. the Kachin, Shan all have their own statelets with their own army, school system, hospital system.

5. Yes, there is some degree of commonality between Indian and Bangladesh Bengalis, but not that much.

Bengalis in both India and Bangladesh united for the liberation of Bangladesh in 1971.

There is also a state called Tripura to the east of Bangladesh which is Bengali-speaking and we are probably closer to them than even West Bengal.

Tripura which is majority Hindu even wanted to join us during the East Pakistan period.

asad71 is more informed than me on everything i.e. Rohingyas, Indian Bengalis.
