Netherlands apology for Indonesia 1940s killings

Tjeerd de Zwaan said the Dutch owed a special responsibility to victims' widows

The Netherlands has made a formal public apology for thousands of summary executions carried out by Dutch troops in its former colony of Indonesia.

Dutch ambassador to Indonesia Tjeerd de Zwaan apologised for the "excesses committed by Dutch forces" between 1945 and Indonesia's independence in 1949.
A UN report at the time condemned the killings as deliberate and ruthless.
The Hague has previously apologised and paid compensation in certain cases, but this was the first general apology.
The ceremony took place at the Dutch embassy in Jakarta, with several relatives of the victims and embassy workers in attendance.
None of the victims' widows was present as they live in Sulawesi and were too frail or ill to travel to the capital, Dutch public broadcaster NOS reported. The Indonesian government was not represented.
"The Dutch government is aware that it bears a special responsibility in respect of Indonesian widows of victims of summary executions," Mr Zwaan said.
"Sometimes it is very important to be able to look back in order to be able to look one another straight in the eyes and be able to move forward together - and that of course is what this public apology and ceremony is all about," he said.
    Fight for independence
Clashes between the Dutch army and Indonesians began in 1945.
South Sulawesi was the scene of one of the worst Dutch atrocities. In January 1947, more than 200 Indonesian men were executed on a field in front of a local government office in what was then known as Celebes.
That same year, at least 150 people were killed by Dutch forces in Balongsari village, formerly known as Rawagede.
Two high-profile court cases in the Netherlands have resulted in 20,000 euros ($26,600; £16,800) being awarded to the widows of some of the victims.
No Dutch soldiers have faced prosecution over the deaths.
Most of current-day Indonesia was ruled by the Netherlands from the 19th Century until World War II, when the Japanese army forced out the Dutch.
When the Dutch attempted to reassert control after the defeat of the Japanese, they met fierce resistance.
The Netherlands finally recognised Indonesia's independence in 1949.

    - Japan has apologized many times to South Korea for 1940s atrocities.
    - Germany has apologized to the Jews many times and paid billions in reparations.

The Netherlands has now followed the example of these two economic giants and apologized to Indonesia for some of its crimes.

Pakistan has never apologized to Bangladesh for the 1971 genocide and refuses to do so. However Germany and Japan are civilized first world nations, Pakistan is a third world state run by a brutal feudal-military establishment, so not much can be expected.

Who cares? They killed hundreds of thousands of people in Indonesia, raped and esnlaved even more. Most of the wealth and prosperity was of Holland comes from their looting and pillaging.

This apology is just a mockery to what they did to Indonesians.

        It is better than nothing.

A step in the right direction.

There is no follow up step. This is it.

You expect pakistan to do the same? I would demand millions of dollars and prosecution of those responsible for what happened in Bangladesh. I would demand blood money and punishments. Public hangings. Stuff like that.

I don't want to talk too much about Pakistan but one day I may start a thread on that issue, suffice to say the current Bangladeshi government's official demands are: 1: An official apology, 2: Fair division of some pre-71 assets/debts, 3: Reparations.

We know we may never get these and there is no point in waiting for it - which we aren't - and it is better to just work hard and build our country as we are currently doing.

            Anyway back to the topic.

You almost sound like what the Netherlands has done i.e. apology is something bad rather than good.

It is bad. Because after this, the book on centuries of atrocities and crimes in Indonesia will be closed.

After this, nobody will ever dare to question the way the Netherlands treated its colonies.

Most people complain about the British and the French, but the Dutch were far worse in their crimes.

In The Netherlands, there is an ethnic minority called the "Indo's". They are originally from Indonesia. When Dutch men would travel to Indonesia to rob and pillage the iselands, they would go there without their wives. So they would take Indonesian women as sex slaves and abuse them.

The children of those Indonesians sex slaves were physically different than average Indonesians. So the Indonesians would treat them differently because they were basterds born in the house of the slave masters.

These basterd children then started hating Indonesians and ended up serving the Dutch colonial government as their most loyal servants.

All Indos are Christians and in some cases, they are fundamentalist evangelicals.

When Indonesia got its independence, the Indos were forced to flee Indonesia. They were welcomed in the Netherlands as part of their own community.

Today, the most racist and anti-foreigner group among all of the Dutch society are the Indos. Infact, Geert Wilders is one of them. He dies his hair to look European like most Indos do. They hate Muslims and Middle Eastern people with a passion.
