Bangladesh starts building first container, LCU vessels

    Our Correspondent, Khulna

Bangladesh for the first time started building two container ships and another two vessels, called Landing Craft Utility (LCU), at the Khulna Shipyard Limited premises yesterday.

Navy Chief Vice Admiral M Farid Habib, as chief guest, initiated the construction through a keel-laying ceremony.

The container ship, meant to ply between Dhaka and Chittagong, measures 75 metre in length, 13.5 metre in width, has a depth of 5.20 meter and has two 600 horse power engines, providing a maximum speed of 20 knots. It is capable of carrying 140 containers which are 20 feet in length.
The 415-tonne capacity LCU, meant for Bangladesh Navy, is a boat used by amphibious forces to transport equipment and troops to shores.
It measures 137 feet in length and 33 feet in width. Its two 600 horse power engines provide a top speed of 18 kilometres per hour.

An example of a container ship including the different components.

    1. Bangladesh has produced millions of worth of ships for European companies in the past few years, something to the region of between £0.1-0.2 billion dollars.

    2. These however have been small or medium ships but this is an expansion in the Bangladesh shipping industries technological and manufacturing capabilities.

    3. The acquired engineering and electronic expertise in this project can then be utilized for other commercial, military and educational projects.

    Container ship design:

This may be the biggest Bangladeshi engineering project yet, Bangladesh makes smartphones and laptops but this is on a bigger scale.

Great sign of progress. I just have a related question:

Is it possible for Bengali entrepeneurs to use all that junk from Western shipping companies to build new ships?

Instead of letting that junk rot there and polute Bengali coastline, enterpeneurs should use all of the material and start buidling new, reclycled ships.

        1. Bangladesh is the biggest ship breaker in the world i.e. obselete ships they get them and break them.

Ship breaking or ship demolition is a type of ship disposal involving the breaking up of ships for scrap recycling. Most ships have a lifespan of a few decades before there is so much wear that refitting and repair become uneconomical. Ship breaking allows materials from the ship, especially steel, to be recycled. Equipment on board the vessel can also be reused.
As an alternative to ship breaking, ships are also sunk to make artificial reefs after being cleaned up. Other possibilities are floating (or land-based) storage.
        However ship breaking has problems:

In recent years, ship breaking has become an issue of environmental concern beyond the health of the yard workers. Many ship breaking yards operate in developing nations with lax or no environmental law, enabling large quantities of highly toxic materials to escape into the general environment and causing serious health problems among ship breakers, the local population, and wildlife.[2] Environmental campaign groups such as Greenpeace have made the issue a high priority for their activities.
So I cannot say that it is that enviromentally friendly, but nor can I say what the so-called "enviromentalists" say is completely true.

        2. Can this material be recycled to be used to make new ships?

        I do not know.

        3. Bangladesh is doing well, however Indonesia is technologically far more ahead than Bangladesh.

Indonesia was behind Bangladesh in the 60s and early 70s (East Pakistan/Bangladesh period) and if Bangladesh had continued under the leadership of general Zia (ask asad71 ) then it could be like Indonesia or Malaysia today.

Indonesia makes ships, wants to make submarines and has an advanced air craft industry.

          1. Shipbreaking is related to scrap trade, which is controlled by international syndicates / mafia. We have cheap labor and suitable coast-line for the work. Initially this industry relocated here from Sri Lanka after the civil war started there. But now we have become experienced and organized in this so that it is going to stay.

          2. Most of the tools and eqpt are taken out of the ship, repaired and infact a lot is exported. The furniture is used locally. All shipbreakers also have steel re-rolling mills. So the scrap goes there mostly.

          3. We are fast emerging as a shipbuilder of ocean-going vessels and exporters.

All the time. But for India's intransigence we would have got far ahead. Even now we are ahead of India and Pakistan in many aspect.

                1. Indian influence in Bangladesh is greatly exaggerated, though yes India does try and project influence in India and bribe some Bangladeshi politicians to do its bidding.

If you think that India controls Bangladesh because you've been reading defence.pk, that forum's "Bangladeshi" section is dominated by Jamatis, war criminal supporters and Pakistani-wannabes.

They are opposed to the current government so lie all the time about supposed excessive Indian control of Bangladesh.

Also on that forum (where the Pakistani mods allow the Jamatis to bully normal Bangladeshi posters) you would not know things that under the current Awami League government, Indian border guards shooting Bangladeshi civilians has decreased. The Indian BSF (Border Security Force) also murder Indian civilians too.

                2. Bangladesh is a Muslim nation and more Islamic (legislatively) than Turkey with for example traditional "shari'ah" based laws on marriage, inheritance and family law.

                3. The next government is likely to be the BNP in a few months i.e. 4 months time in January.

                The BNP is

                Pro-Saudi
                Pro-Pakistan

They also ruled from 2001-2006, so if Bangladesh was controlled by India how did they get in to power and rule for 5 years and likely to rule for another 5 years?

Past (and most likely soon to be) Bangladeshi prime minister, Khaleda Zia (second from left, lady in black) in Saudi Arabia, in the prophet's (sollAllahu 'alaihi wa sallam) mosque. Her party the BNP is pro-Saudi.

America has the biggest influence in Bangladesh and if today America OKed or even demanded a Bangladeshi military coup against the current government, the army (which doesn't like the current leader) would overthrow her tomorrow morning.

                3. America has more influence on Pakistan than India does on Bangladesh.

                - America bombs Pakistan, India does not bomb Bangladesh.

                - America has military bases in Pakistan, India does not in Bangladesh.

                - America has regular military personnel and American mercenaries in Pakistan, India does not in Bangladesh.

                - America is reputed to have threatened to bomb Pakistan back to the "stoneage" (Armitage's alleged words to Pakistani dictator Musharraf in 2001), India would never dare do such a thing to Bangladesh.

                - America has violated Pakistani airspace and sent its soldiers to carry out military operations in Pakistan e.g. Osama bin Laden killing.

India has never done such a thing in Bangladesh.

                I could go on.

Suffice to say unlike Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Pakistan, UAE, Bangladesh does not allow any foreign military bases on its soil despite the US begging for 50-60 years for a base in Bangladesh's St Martin's island.

So be weary of what Pakistani nationalists and wannabe-Pakistani traitors from the Jamat e Islami (in Bangladesh) say in defence.pk or other forums.

Defence.pk is a Pakistani run website for Pakistani nationalists and Pakistani-wannabes (e.g. Jamatis and razakars) and they warn or ban pro-Bangladeshi members.

Please feel free to ask any more questions wrora.

                Deera manana.
