• UAE stops $12 billion Turkish energy deal

UAE Investment Casualty
Of Turkey’s Egypt Policy

By: Erdal Sağlam for Al-Monitor Turkey Pulse Posted on September 1.

TÜRKÇE OKUYUN

The economic bill for Turkey’s foreign policy, which is resented by most regional countries, is slowly adding up. While exports to Syria and Egypt directly — and via Turkey to other countries — are steadily declining, the first real blow was the suspension of the United Arab Emirates’ (UAE) $12 billion investment in a coal-based energy project.

There is conflicting news on whether the investment in what is called the “biggest ever Turkish energy project” is suspended or perhaps altogether canceled. While company representatives in Turkey say the investment has been suspended, Reuters news agency quoted sources in the UAE asserting that the investment has been completely canceled.
Remarks by Taner Yildiz, minister of energy, suggested that reports of a complete cancellation were accurate. Yildiz said making such a decision without asking Turkey was not proper, but Turkey has ‘’already started discussions with other countries to implement this project.’’

Egypt policy

Yildiz said talks with the UAE public corporation TAQA for the $12 billion investment ‘’had reached a certain level." He added, "I hope their decision is not based on political reasons. I want to believe that the decision is not political, but developments in Egypt and Syria seem to be affecting their energy decisions.”

TAQA was to carry out rehabilitation work on the current coal reserves and power stations and build new ones. After the countries agreed in January 2013, work had started on a partnership structure. EUAS, a subsidiary of the Ministry of Energy, was to have 35% equity and TAQA 65%. After finalizing the equity, next was the “host country agreement.’’ But then TAQA announced it had decided to retain a Turkish partner, and that it was in touch with Turkish companies to sell 14% or less of its 65% share.
The original agreement called for an investment of $12 billion. With this investment, 85 million tons of coal per year and 45 billion kilowatt-hours of energy per year were to be produced. With the Intergovernmental Agreement on Cooperation for Lignite Extraction and Electricity Production in the Afsin-Elbistan region, new power stations were slated for the B, C, D, E and G fields of the basin. About 40% of Turkey’s 4.4 billion tons of lignite reserves are in the Afsin-Elbistan basin. At the moment, there are two thermal power stations with 2,888 megawatt capacity.

Saudi Arabia panic

Although Yildiz said talks had already begun with other countries who may take over the project, it is obvious that to find a company or country that will agree to such a grand investment in the context of the current global financial environment will not be easy.

It is understood that the Turkish government was surprised by the UAE decision. The government is apprehensive of such a decision by the UAE following Saudi Arabian recriminations against Turkey because of its anti-coup position in Egypt.

The Turkish government, thinking that Saudi Arabia — which had been one of the major supporters of the Erdogan government since the first day it took power — might have played a part in the cancellation of the UAE investment, is now afraid of losing the complete support of the Gulf capital. Although there is no major Saudi investment in Turkey, it is well known that with Saudis leading the way, the rulers of the Gulf countries prefer to deal with Turkey in buying personal assets and investing their personal and national savings.
This is why Turkey decided to take immediate action to repair damaged relations with Saudi Arabia. On Aug. 28, Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu paid a one-day visit to Saudi Arabia. Upon his return, Davutoglu said there are many developments in the region that necessitate consultations between the two counties. He said they discussed what can be done to protect regional stability and find a solution to the crises, in addition to possible roles of Turkey and the Gulf Cooperation Council.
Davutoglu did not mention economic relations, but in the Foreign Ministry's corridors it is said that the true purpose of the visit was "how to improve the relations that were beginning to hurt the economy as soon as possible.’’

As financial indicators in Turkey are seriously deteriorating, the debate is now to what extent the risks caused by foreign policy are playing a part. In the week of Aug. 26, dollar parity went above 2 Turkish lira and treasury bill interests passed 10%, both exceeding psychological limits that are seen as indicators of bad news for the economy.
It is known that the real cause of the deterioration in the economy is the Federal Reserve’s plan to reduce treasury bond purchases. Turkey, similar to other developing countries, fears a reduction in incoming foreign investments. But it is not a secret that the level of deterioration in Turkey over the past month is higher than in other developing economies. Turkey’s recent foreign policy is seen as the main cause of this divergence.

Turkey, with its resolute stand on the side of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt, has dissociated itself from the United States and the Western bloc, but this time is also confronting regional countries that back the coup in Egypt. This perception of loneliness is bound to negatively affect the economy.

Now, should there be an operation against Syria, Turkey and Israel are listed as countries to be targeted in retaliation. This risk of clashes leads to concerns about its affects on Turkey and its economy, which in turn affects market indices.
Bankers say that they can't precisely estimate the effect of such policies, but that they are clearly instrumental.
Effect on exports
Regional foreign policy has led to a decline in exports, which in turn has adversely affected the economy. Zafer Caglayan, minister of economy who is responsible for foreign trade, when answering questions on trade with Syria, said that at the beginning of the crisis Turkey’s exports to Syria were at the $1.5 billion level, and if all had gone well they would have been at the $2.5-3 billion level now.

The Turkey–Egypt volume of trade was also in an upward swing, reaching $5.16 billion in 2012. In 2012, Turkey's exports to Egypt grew by 33% to $3.68 billion.

Although final numbers are not available, exports to these two countries have declined significantly this year. Moreover, there are problems with Turkish exports to other countries via Egypt and Syria because of transport problems. Europe once made up Turkey’s largest market, and increasing exports to regional countries was important for the economy. Now this hope has been disrupted as foreign policies implemented and international positions taken have hit Turkey’s exports, and therefore its production.
In short, Turkey now has to cope with multifaceted negative trends — not only politically but also economically.

1. This is good news. Turkey has been behaving very arrogantly and trying to boss and bully other Muslim countries around including Egypt, Syria, Bahrain, Bangladesh and even the GCC.

2. This move has shown the Turkish regime that it must know its limits.

3. The Turkish regime is well-known to be a US-sponsored one and trying to implement the US-designed policy of "Neo-Ottomanism".

The Ottoman Empire was a dictatorship ruled by the Ottoman royals and their elites who were mainly white Europeans from the Balkans e.g. Bosnians, Albanians and where even Turks were second class citizens, the very term "Turk" was derogatory.

The Ottoman Empire neglected the Arab world and did nothing for it and generally treated Arabs with contempt.

The Mughal Empire, another Turkic empire, was another racist empire which also had a racial hierarchy and which was fiercely resisted in Bengal and also by Pashtuns e.g. Khushal Khan Khattak.

Bengalis did not/do not like the Mughal empire but instead respect the Pathan rulers and Khans of Bengal such as Isa Khan, Usman Afghan Khan and others.
asad71

So no to neo-Ottomanism.

No to Turkish fascism and Turkish racial supremacism.

No to Bernard Lewis, Brzenski and the American regime.

Turkey collaborates with the USA, and specially in our region, even though it criticizes Israel it has a long history of collaboration with Israel.
In fact Azerbaijan, which is a proxy state of Turkey is one of very important allies of Israel.
Politics are quiet double standated in many occasions and not all political moves are direct, some are really hidden ones.

It's a long story and this forum which unfortunately has its trolls who seek to derail threads as well as the respectable members is perhaps not the best place to say this, so in the future I may do a more comprehensive thread on Khyberwatch.

1. Turkey has been under Anglo-Saxon i.e. UK/US control for quite a while, especially since Anglo-American agent, Kemal took power.

2. The Turkish military is under the control of the US and can only carry out coups with US permission, in fact all the various coups they carried out were partly done for US interests.

3. The Fethullah Gulen movement is a US-sponsored one.

4. The AKP is also US sponsored and in fact secularists, leftists in Turkey are well of this, they often call Abdullah Gul as ABDullah Gul, since ABD is the Turkish for USA.

5. The American regime wants a Turkish-dominated Muslim bloc that will create problems for America's rivals.

a: Russia, e.g. Caucasus i.e. Azerbaijan/Armenia, Dagestan, Chechnya etc as well as the Volga.

The rate of violence and bombings in the north Caucasus is startling. More bombs probably go off there then for example a country like Lebanon.

b: China, to use the Pan-Turkic and pan-Islamic card in Xianjiang including the well-known US asset, "Al-Qaida"

Ironically the Uighurs in Xianjian are

i: Hostile to other Turkic groups such as Kazakhs
ii: Hostile to other Muslim groups such as the Hui, the Hui are more religious, more Islamic and are pro-China

c: EU, for Turkey to support Balkan Muslims e.g. Bosniaks, Albanians, Torbeshi etc and Europe is very uncomfortable with independent Muslim majority states in the Balkans.

Since you are Armenian the US is planning a war in Russia including the North Caucasus where they will use Salafis and other radicals.

1: http://www.panarmenian.net/eng/news/...iceman_injured

Attacks on security forces, police and civilians occur regularly in the North Caucasus, generated by ethnic, religious and political rivalries, as well as poverty and corruption. The violence is also fed by an Islamist insurgency, which has been especially resilient in Dagestan and fueled a series of bloody post-Soviet separatist wars in the neighboring republic of Chechnya.
This happened just today!

2:

12 days earlier:

Russian police stormed a house in the town of Buinaksk on Tuesday, killing the owner of the house and four Islamist militants including 50-year-old Bammatkhan Sheikov, Interfax News Agency reported.

One soldier was wounded during the encounter, the report said.

Moscow has tightened security in the volatile region, as Russia is preparing to host the 2014 Winter Olympics in the Black Sea resort of Sochi in Krasnodar, 1,000 kilometers from Dagestan.

Russia has been fighting militants since the mid 1990s in the volatile North Caucasus region, where the Republics of Chechnya, Dagestan, and Ingushetia have been the scene of sporadic attacks and militant clashes.

On July 14, four police officers were killed when unidentified gunmen opened fire on them in Dagestan....On May 25, one police officer was killed and 14 others injured after a bomb explosion occurred near the headquarters of Dagestan’s Interior Ministry in Makhachkala.
3:

Russia’s north Caucasus is wracked by ongoing violence centered in the federal republic of Dagestan.

Violence escalates in Dagestan amid incipient Islamist insurgency

By Andrea Peters

15 August 2013

Russia’s north Caucasus is wracked by ongoing violence centered in the federal republic of Dagestan. Home to nearly three million people, the geostrategically important region is becoming the focal point of a low-level Islamist insurgency that has spilled over from neighboring Chechnya.
The Kremlin is increasingly concerned about the links between militants of this separatist movement and the Islamist jihadists playing the leading role in the US-backed proxy war in Syria.

Russia regards the war in Syria as a matter of national survival. It is not just a conflict in the remote Middle east but actually just one theatre in a wider war against Russia itself. The anti-Assad militants backed by the US, Turkey and GCC Arabs are part of the anti-Russia militancy in Dagestan and Chechnya.

Russia knows if Syria goes, the next on the hit list is Iran, and then Russia and China itself.

This is why Russia, China, Iran and Syria are all working together for the survival of the Assad government.

There is a reason why internet rumours and claims are being spread that Russia will consider attacking Saudi Arabia, this is to deter the west against attacking Syria.

Russia is not backing Assad for principles, for oil, or for even the heavily overemphasized naval base in Tartus but for the very survival of Russia.

While discussing most Muslim nations we need to remember that the mass of the population and the rulers are poles apart in their ideas, ideology or behaviour. Nowhere is this more true than in in the oil kingdoms. The rulers are stooges set up and nurtured by the West. They must do the West's bidding, no matter how/what the population think.

A line[Durrand line] of hatred that raised a wall between the two brothers -Hamid Karzai

For generations, the Hindus of India prayed for deliverance from "the venom of the cobra, the teeth of the tiger and the vengeance of the Afghan."

The men of Kábul and Khilj also went home; and whenever they were questioned about the Musulmáns of the Kohistán (the mountains), and how matters stood there, they said, "Don't call it Kohistán, but Afghánistán; for there is nothing there but Afgháns and disturbances." Thus it is clear that for this reason the people of the country call their home in their own language Afghánistán, and themselves Afgháns. The people of India call them Patán; but the reason for this is not known. But it occurs to me, that when, under the rule of Muhammadan sovereigns, Musulmáns first came to the city of Patná, and dwelt there, the people of India (for that reason) called them Patáns—but God knows!

The Turkish Islamism is an Ikhwani version of Islam. Sponsored by the west to fool people into believing their government is islamic.

1. The current Turkish government is much better than the previous Kemalist regimes which were secular (but not liberal secular i.e. everyone could practise their religion but religion was not involved in politics, but militantly anti-religion) and fascist e.g. destruction of 3,000 Kurdish villages.

So Erdogan, Gul, Davutoglu, Gulen are much better than the Nazi-like Kemalists.

They should be respected for their work in combatting Kemalism and muzzling the fascist Turkish army.

2. Yes, the current Turkish government is in general Pan-Islamic.

3. The problem is that it views itself as a sort of overlord that can interfere in the affairs of other Muslim countries thus violating all diplomatic protocol.

In terms of Bangladesh. Let me explain the problem.

In the 1971 war, there were traitors belonging to the fascist group, "Jamat i Islami" and others who sided with the Pakistani army. Now believing to stay within the Pakistani federation is a legitimate political stance, however killing, raping and massacring isn't.

- Jamat was involved in massacring Bengalis including whole villages.

- Jamat organized brothels for Pakistani soldiers where Muslim Bengali women were raped.

- After independence Jamat went to the Arab countries and told them not to recognize Bangladesh and that it was ruled by Hindus and mosques were being destroyed i.e. outrageous lies.

- Jamat is aligned to other Ikhwani/Muslim brotherhood style groups including the AKP in Turkey and Muslim brotherhood in Egypt as well as close to the Saudi regime. Jamati thugs on the internet have even boasted of how they will influence the Saudi regime to expel Bangladeshi workers from Saudi and the gulf to bully the current Bangladeshi government.

- Jamat is hated by Bangladeshis including religious people but this radical organization has cultivated ties with the Saudi regime and others.

Jamat are now being tried in war crimes trials. Now, yes..these trials are to an extent motivated by our current ruling regime's political agenda, however Jamatis are criminals.

Turkey got involved by

1. Their AKP President, Abdullah Gul telling Bangladesh to release Jamati war criminal, Ghulam Azam.

Diplomatic tension has been created between Dhaka and Ankara over Turkish President Abdullah Gul's letter to President Zillur Rahman calling for "clemency" to the accused under trial in the International Crimes Tribunal for the "sake of peace in the society".

Gul requested clemency for Ghulam Azam and the other accused, foreign ministry sources said.

Tension intensified as Ankara summoned yesterday Bangladesh Ambassador to Turkey Md Zulfiqur Rahman, a day after Dhaka summoned Turkish Ambassador in Bangladesh Mehmet Vakur Erkul on Wednesday.

The foreign ministry sources told The Daily Star yesterday that content of the December 23 letter from the Turkish president is not acceptable and it is a clear interference in the internal affairs of Bangladesh.

Gul said the accused leaders of Jamaat-e-Islami are too old to stand trial and apprehended that it might cause a civil war in Bangladesh, the sources mentioned.

Dhaka was surprised to get such a letter and was going to send a reply to the Turkish president, but it was delayed because of the president's illness.
2. Sending a group of 14 AKP and other fundamentalist related Turks in to Bangladesh to support fellow fundamentalists of Jamat.

Subsequently, the visit of a 14-member delegation of Turkish NGO Cansuyu Aid and Solidarity Association from December 20 to 24 hiding their identity and misusing “on arrival visa” facilities and its inappropriate activities have made Dhaka too unhappy.

The foreign ministry summoned the Turkish envoy in Dhaka and asked him to explain the NGO team's visit without informing the government.

Acting Foreign Secretary Mustafa Kamal also handed over an aide memoir (diplomatic letter) to the ambassador in which Dhaka strongly protested Gul's letter and said it was an interference in the internal affairs of the country.

The aide memoir categorically mentioned that Bangladesh government is determined to conduct the war crimes trial as there is overwhelming support from the people...

They said the Turkish envoy has violated certain diplomatic norms and he can be expelled as he did not give prior information to the government about arrival of the delegation and subsequently he concealed information about its programmes and schedules.

The ambassador did not inform the foreign ministry about the delegation's meeting with leaders of BNP and Jamaat and others as well as its visit to the ICT.

- The Turkish regime lied to Bangladesh.

- The Turkish regime did not apologize to Bangladesh for lying to Bangladesh and getting involved in our domestic affairs and supporting an organization involved in war crimes.

This increased Turkish harassment of Muslim countries is also instigated and promoted by the Americans, the designers of Neo-Ottomanism.

The American regime and their Turkish proxies have chosen the wrong country to try and bully. Bengal was home to countless acts of rebellion against the British, so much so that the British banned military recruitment from Bengal.

By the way as a Bangladeshi I will totally support

Dear Bengal Tiger, I have not too much time and the possibility to read all your sources, specially i cannot watch youtube right now, so I answer shortly.
But i am open for any discussions.
Also Turkey and Azerbaijan have been and are long time our enemies all in our region should be watched with very great attention.
why? Unfortunately the fronts today are not anymore divided clearly as they were once, the US and Britain, or I would even better say the shadow organizations that try to rule the world have a lot of different plans so they can win indifferently on how the conflict goes.
This belongs Also to Turkey, Azerbaijan and my own country.
They make experiments and try to keep things in a destabilized manner, You cannot even immagine how many frozen conflicts do exist in the caucasus that are kept as a secondary scenario for cruel leaders of some countries.
I know quiet well the situation in Daghestan as I lived in a border region to Daghestan (in Russia), and have many different friends among Avars and specially Lezgins.
According to them a lot of British activity exists in Daghestan and yes the situation really got bad there, it is not only bad due to terrorism.
But it is bad because some really great religious elders were killed, and these elders were not pro Russian even, they were simply respected among the people, so they needed to be eliminated by the shadowforces.
I have to say however that Russias politics on its own caucasus aren't good neither.
With all respect I would love to have i cannot respect some leaders that Russian government counts on, and also it does not react on the national problems of Daghestani citizens (for example Russia gave some Lezgi villages to Azerbaijan, but hopefully things will change).
Turkey is storically one of the 3 bigger players on Caucasus, and they use some triple ideology of "muslim brotherhood", "panturkic brotherhood", economic cooperation" and so on.
On one hand the help Shia Azerbaijan for Panturkic reasons, where almost a fascist state exists.
I feel sorry for Azeris, yes we are enemies, but they are heavily manipulated by their propaganda so that even other Turkic countries have problems with them.
On the other hand Turkey is involved in anti-Shia groups in North caucasus.
On one hand it helps the pro-Israeli Azerbaijan on the other hand it has the possibility to talk against Israel.
Politics became like that.
Me i don't trust politicians and don't even follow the news or TV, because 99 is lies.
USA have also their own people inside Armenia, but we are only a very secondary option, because we are very small as nation, they use us mostly to controll their own allies, like Turkey.
They use the "genocide card" for this purposes, many of my landsmen were killed by Ottoman and Turkish forces in a genocide and they make some coward Armenians believe that they want to help us as they are the "civilization", this way Turkey is partly controlled too.
I know about the ideas of Panturkism and so on, but it is a very false ideology like every racism, it doesn't work.
You can look only on the Tengiz masacre wnd how Turks treated Kazakhs there (offcialy they claim Kazakhs to be their Turkic brothers and by the way Kazakhs have actually much more Turkic culture than Turkey has).
On Uyghurs problems with Kazakhs i didn'T know, in Soviet times it were the Kazakhs that made even a film about Uyghurs and in very favor of them (it is called "God drakona" [the Dragon year]).
About Hui and Uyghurs I must say that they have problems for very long time. As I know it was the Hui army that won the Ughurs in various occarios and it is due to them that Uyghurs are part of China, but I may be wrong, i am not very informed on this issues.

One think that i know is to be carefull with every news, because the unhuman forces that try to rule this world have their people almost in every state and movement ( I am not a fanatic of conspiracy theories, but unfortunately i can see many lies arround).

Russia for sure has to bear hard problems from Europe and USA, there are really a lot of interest to disintegrate rhe Russian federation, but as many problems there might be, it won't bring anything good to the people, like the dissolvemente of the Soviet Union in different states simply added more problems to the already existing ones.
Now instead of one bad regime we have many, with the peoples divided trough brders made by some Zars and a crazy Georgian.

Tjanaparh,

1. I don't base my opinions exclusively on the news, most of it which is based on the agenda of the particular organization or country showing it. Everyone be it Press TV, RT, Al-Jazeera, CNN has an agenda.

The problem however the dominant western media like everyone to believe that only they are free and fair whereas all others are propaganda organs.

2. Though Russia is not perfect and I am not a Russophile in the least, the Salafi/Wahabi extremists backed by the US and its clients e.g. Saudi are far more dangerous.

The Russian establishment accepts that Russia is a diverse federation consisting of different ethnic groups and religions (Orthodox, Muslims, Buddhists etc)

3. Turkey has been controlled by the Anglo-Saxon powers since the time of Anglo-American agent, Mustafa Kemal and the army and key Islamic groups are controlled by the US though they (the army and "Islamists") may fight each other the US controls them both.

The US wants to create problems for Russia, China, the EU etc. It used radical Islam to destroy the Soviet Union e.g. Afghanistan and wants to use the radical Islam card to create more problems for its enemies.

There is a reason why

- Turkey is going to make ICBMs (inter-continental ballistic missiles) i.e. missiles that can strike any place on earth.

- Turkey is going to build 4th generation fighter planes (only the US, Russia, China, France etc can do this).

- Turkey is planning to build air craft carriers.

ICBMS are missiles that can hit any place one earth, even India and Pakistan do not have them, Turkey is planning to produce them. This means Turkey could in theory strike Moscow or Beijing.

Turkey and neo-Ottomanism is a threat and the Turks are well-known bullies, both historically and as people.

Neo-Ottomanism is a threat to the Muslim world and must be destroyed and insha'Allah it will.

India and Pakistan's missile range.

India and Pakistan do not have ICBMS.

America, Russia and China do and now Turkey is planning to make its own ICBMS which can hit any place on earth.
