Burma Army shows contempt of Buddhism during latest attacks in Shan State

WEDNESDAY, 03 JULY 2013 15:08 S.H.A.N NEWS - SHAN HERALD AGENCY FOR NEWS

During attacks last week violating the ceasefire with the Shan State Army-North (SSA-N), the Burma Army shelled a Buddhist temple in central Shan State, displacing dozens of monks, and turned the temple into a military base.

On June 23, after sending in reconnaissance planes, over 100 troops of Light Infantry Battalions 525 and 569 launched an artillery attack on the village of Wan Warb, 30 kilometers north-west of the SSA-N headquarters at Wan Hai, in Ke See township. Mortar shells (60 mm and 79 mm) damaged the temple and seven houses, injuring four villagers. A 90-year-old woman died of shock when shells hit her house.

The attack caused over 30 monks and novices and about 150 villagers to flee to surrounding areas. The troops looted the temple, as well as residents’ houses, stealing food, money and valuables. Troops from two Burmese battalions are now based at the temple, using it as a military command post.

On June 25, Burmese officers summoned village headmen from nearby villages to the temple and questioned them about Shan troop movements in the area. A man detained for two days was beaten.

On the same day that government troops were shelling the Wan Warb Temple, President Thein Sein’s Office issued a statement blaming TIME magazine for “damaging the image of Buddhism.”

“If President Thein Sein cares about protecting Buddhism, why is he letting his troops shell and desecrate Shan temples?” said Tzarm Noan, Shan Human Rights Foundation coordinator. “Thein Sein’s claims to respect religion are as hollow as his claims to promote peace.”

The attacks are the latest in a series of operations in recent months by the Burma Army to encircle and cut off the Wan Hai headquarters of the SSA-N, in direct violation of their renewed ceasefire agreement in January 2012.

A map and details of human rights violations committed by the Burma Army in Ke See township during June 23-30, 2013, can be viewed on Shan Human Rights Foundation

    1. Burma is dominated by the Bamar ethnic group who control "Burma" (as Punjabis dominate Pakistan).

    2. The Bamars hate Christians, Muslims and non-Bamar Buddhists. They have burnt churches, destroyed mosques and as can be seen in the report above also attacked Buddhist places of worship.

    3. They have launched a plan of gradual but steady ethnic cleansing of Rohingya Muslims in the Arakan region of western Burma.

Last year they launched a pogrom of Rohingya Muslims. This was stopped by strong international pressure led by Indonesia, Saudi Arabia and Turkey.

      After years of

      - Persecution (Rohingyas cannot even marry without the approval of Bamar officials, they cannot travel outside their towns without approval).

      - Ethnic cleansing, hundreds of thousands of Rohingyas now live in Saudi Arabia, Bangladesh and Pakistan.

      - Murder, many have been slaughtered.

      - Rape, their women have been raped.

There are now reports that Islamic resistance fighters have reached the Arakan province in Burma and have launched operations against the Bamar army and extremist Buddhist monks instigating a campaign of genocide and ethnic cleansing.

      The resistance has started.

This man has the power to stop the conflict in Arakan exploding out of all control and bringing in Bangladesh, Thailand, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and others to be involved militarily directly or indirectly.

He is heading Burma to the path of ruin and destruction. He is the man known as the "Asian Hitler", the ruthless and brutal Than Shwe head of the Burmese military which runs Burma.

      * There are reports that over 20+ Burmese soldiers have been killed recently by Islamic resistance fighters. This may just be the start.

If the Burmese army cannot take them on the other 4-5 major rebel armies in Burma including the Christian Kachin army, the Buddhist Shan, the Chinese backed Wa army may consider a joint ground offensive (who are said to have more soldiers all together than the Burmese army) to capture Naypyidaw, the Burmese capital and overthrow Than Shwe as Gaddafi was overthrown.

          1. Bangladesh has taken in under 1 million Rohingyas in an already heavily populated country.

          2. It raises this issue at many fora including at the OIC.

          3. I personally want a much more aggressive response to the Burmese junta, and I can't go in to details but there is support provided for Rohingyas of a more "robust" nature, suffice to say I won't divulge more than that in an internet message board such as this.

U Hla Maung,an ex-ambassador threatened Muslims organizations in Myanmar to cooperate with government propaganda to lie to International Community
Myanmar Muslim Media U Hla Maung,an ex-ambassador pressure Muslims organizations in Myanmar to cooperate with government propaganda …

60 mosques were destroyed by ruthless attacked of Buddhists terrorists’ anarchy over past one year. Yet U Hla Maung,an ex-ambassador pressure Muslims organizations in Myanmar to cooperate with government propaganda to international community which claimed there is no religious discrimination and oppression to minority Muslims. Muslims organizations refuse to co-operate.

News – Moe Chit Thu ( Myanmar Muslim Media ) Translated by -Saw Closay

U Hla Maung said ” President is encouraging effort of Multi-religious group to keep different religious in harmony and if Muslims organizations do not join such group, individuals in Muslims organization and Muslims organization could be in trouble” Muslims are hesitating to join such government sponsored Multi-religious group due to lack of transparency and subject to bias and forced to give in government manipulation said by a local Muslim who does not wish to be named.

On 25th of this month, U Hla Muang invited Muslims organisations such as Olama, Islamic religious council of Myanmar, Ma Ma La to his house and threaten to join such government sponsored Multi-religious group.

One of the leader of government recognized religious orngaisation said ” we do not join such government sponsored Muti-religious group because person like U Hla Maung is there, we do respect the rest of the religious leaders in the group though.”

To stop international pressure to Myanmar for oppression and injustice to minority Muslims in Myanmar and to counter pressure to international community, U Hla Maung is forcing Muslims leaders and organization to give impression to diplomatic circles in Myanmar that if international community keep pressure to Myanmar government, Muslims in Myanmar will suffer more then what they are suffering now.

Violence attacks by Buddhist terrorists to Muslims in Rakhine State and other part of Myanmar left more than 160,000 Rohigya homeless 400 over people killed according to report of a foreign country.

Another attack to Muslims in Meikthila killed more than 100 Muslims and all these violence and killing happen just after Thein Sein’s government came to power and now they are under huge international pressure and need to come out with some propaganda to deceive the international community which is old method of previous junta, that there is freedom of religious and no discrimination policy. It seems that former ambassador, U Hla Maung has been assigned to set up a plot to manipulate and deceive to international community.

United State of America, UK and French etc have voiced out their grave concern to violence attacks to Muslims in Myanmar and warn Thein Sein’s government to address and stop immediately.

Thein Sein’s government had set up Muti-religious understanding and harmony group in 2008.But instead of addressing religious conflicts and sort out misunderstanding among different religious, the government is using up such group as a tool to manipulate and serve their cause for dressing up their dirty image.

During the Meitthila massacre, which shocked the world government sponsored Muti-religious group issued statement which is not addressing root cause and grave impact to victims. Instead they are covering up government blunder to protect Muslims if not government implicit collusion according to some diplomatic circles. For issuing such statement, the group was awarded by the president on the same day Muslim’s houses and mosques were burned down and destroyed in Oakkan, Western Bago Division.

To make the world know about there is no religious freedom, Muslims in Myanmar did not celebrate Eid Adha, which is gazetted public holiday in 2012 according to advice and agreement of all 5 Muslims leading organizations in Myanmar.

20 Rohingyas Arrested for Performing Prayer

              Reports from Buthidaug, Arakan

              August 9, 2013

At 8:30AM this morning (i.e. on 9th August 2013 morning), in Buthidaung, 20 Rohingyas were arrested by Police for perfoiming Eid Prayer. They were arrested at the house of (Ywa Thu Gyi, a former village chief in British Colonial Era) U Kasim in Anauk Gwin village, Quarter 3, Buthidaung township.

A local Rohingya in Buthidaung said “both the township administrator and the village administrator have ordered not to perform any form of prayer on Eid Festival day. Since Eid prayer is one of the two important festival prayers for Muslims, some around 20 Rohingyas gathered and decided to perform the prayer secretly at the house of Ywa Thu Gyi Kasim.

While people were praying, Police raided and arrested all of the 20 people performing prayer (including children). Three of the 20 arrested people are said to have been 1) Abu Sayed, 2) Sayed Karim and 3) Abu Wafa.

Later, they were released after an extortion of Kyat 400,000. Besides, Police has warned that we can’t perform any such prayer in the future either. If we are found doing, we will be imprisoned for life they warned.

Myanmar is the only country in the world, where people are arrested or warned for life-time imprionment for performing prayers.”

And the similar preventions from performing Eid prayers were also carried out in Maung Daw township today.

Breaking News: Six Rohingyas Killed, Several Injured on Eid Festival Day

                RvisionTV News (Updated News Below)

                August 9, 2013

Akyab (Sittway), Arakan- In the lastest shoot out at displaced Rohingyas in Oon Daw Gyi (Baariza Fara) camps, Sittway, today (on 9th August 2013), by Myanmar’s Security Force (Hlun Tin), six Rohingyas died and several critically injured.

A displaced Rohingya reported the tragedy as follows.

“The displaced Rohingyas in Sittway are prevented from celebrating Eid festival and performing the prayer according the curfew order under section 144. Therefore, at 8:30AM, two Rohingya boys from Oon Daw Gyi (Baariza Fara) camps went for fishing to a nearby river. Meanwhile, some Hlun Tin appeared and shoot out at the boys. One boy instantly died, another survived.

According to the surviving victim, the reason why they were shot at is not known. But he said they were made poiting targets by Hlun Tin in their excercise (trainings). (Like Nazi Germans did to Jews!)

After the dead of the victim, other Rohingyas went to Hlun Tin to demand the dead body. Hlun Tin were not giving it. There was a quarrel. Subsequently, Hlun Tin started indiscriminate firing at the crowd. Five more died on the spot and several critically injured. Hlun Tin (s) are beating and torturing the displaced people till now.”

“Rakhine state government is directly responsible for the often killings of Rohingya people. As long as this Nazi-inspired genocidal government is in power, we don’t feel there will be even any initiative for the peace process. They are making Rohingyas targets for their day-to-day purposes. They don’t think we are human beings” he exclaimed.

Updates: Another Version of the Report

Last night, one Rohingya was killed by the security force. And in the shoot out today, two more Rohingyas died and many injured. It has been reported by a local of Sittway as follows.

“There were two Rohingya girls working for the security force to earn money for their survival. They were raped by the security force at their camp yesterday. One Rohingya passing by the camp witnessed the incident. He came back and informed his fellow people in the displaced camps.

Therefore, the elders were planning to at least call the girls back because they were unable to take any action against the security force even though they had committed crimes. The Security Force, somehow, came to know about the eye-witness of the rape incident and his report to his fellow people. Therefore, the Security Force called him on to the camp saying they had to investigate.

Since he went to the camp yesterday, he has been disappearing. The worried people in the IDP camps went to the camp of the security force to ask the man’s whereabouts. The security replied that no Rohingya had been to their camp. The people were unable to believe security force’s say and started to search for the man on their own. The people spotted the drops of blood and then, the dead of the man in the camp.

People demanded security force to hand over the dead body to them. Security Force refused. And it led to a quarrel. The security force started firing at the people: two instantly died and many injured.”

“Besides, the security force torched their camp with a view to destroying the three dead bodies and portraying a fabricated and false image of the incident. They burnt the camp so that they can say they had to shoot at Rohingyas because Rohingyas had toreched their camp. A perfect attempt for double victimizaion of Rohingyas. Everyone has come to know about their attempt in time.

In the burning, two Rohingya dead bodies got destoryed and one was recovered half-burnt.”

The Security Force (Hlun Tin) have been replaced with Military in the region. The security is tightened. Communication tools are being confiscated, while some other Rohingyas have turned off theirs. No Rohingya is, at the moment, allowed to move out of the region. Hence, reports are varying!

Therefore, we are, at the moment, unable to get further details.

                More updates:

Again this evening, the situation got tensed between the security force and the displaced Rohingyas in Bawdupha camps as the security force attempted to arrest six Rohingya men and two Rohingya women. The security forced fired at the Rohingya people and hence, 10 more got injured.

1.This process of the extermination of the Arkanese Muslims had begun with the Japanese occupation of Arkanin WW II. This has now become a part of the ethnic cleansing of Muslims from SA. Hindu India and Buddhist Burma have united in their long range policy of physical elimination of Muslims from SA.

                  2. Only a strong govt at Dhaka, free of Delhi's control, can bring respite to these Burmese atrocities. The entire Muslim world is united in their support of the Rohingyas, but this boils down to nothing since the present BD administration has outsourced it's defense and foreign relations to India.

KIO (Kachin Independence Army) in the north have killed 2 Burmese soldiers this weekend.

At least two soldiers of the Burmese government-backed Kachin Border Guard Force (BGF) were killed during a two hour clash with the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) in the northern part of the state over the weekend.

The fighting started after the BGF attacked several KIA bases in the towns of Chipwi and Sawlaw, in Pangwa region, according to San Aung, a peace broker with the KIA’s political wing—the Kachin Independence Organization (KIO).

The BGF members used to be part of the disbanded New Democratic Army-Kachin (NDAK) that defected from the KIA.

BGF soldiers allegedly received support from government troops during the attacks to target a KIA brigade 1 battalion. The government Light Infantry Battalion No. 521 was thought to be assisting the BGF group with 60 mm rocket-propelled grenade launchers, according to KIA sources.

San Aung told the Irrawaddy that the fighting on Saturday would have escalated if the Burma military didn’t make the BGF stop their offensive.

KIO leaders met with the government Union Level Peace Making team where they signed a seven point agreement intended to monitor and de-escalate the tensions between both sides. Despite being written in vague language, the agreement, in principle, was a good next step. However clashes have continued since it was inked at the end of May.

In June of 2011 the government broke a 17 year ceasefire with the KIO. Although both groups have met many times to discuss peace since the conflict erupted, fighting continues unabated.

                        1. I anticipate the Burmese army to feel the heat heavily with the Kachin and soon the Rohingyas/Muslims to be fighting them in the North and west.

                        2. The other rebel groups may join the Kachin (North) and Rohingyas (West) and then attack the Burmese junta from the south and east.

                        3. The rebel armies combined are bigger than the Burmese army and could carry out a Libya style overthrow of the Naypyidaw regime in Burma.

A Kachin Baptist pastor and his family members were physically assaulted by Burma army forces in Kachin state's northern Putao district earlier this month, according to friends of the alleged victims. Army troops are said to have beaten up Ram Mai and his family as fighting between the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) and the government forces broke out near the pastor's village at Nhka Ga.

The fighting around Nhka Ga involved government troops and their allies from a local militia group led by Kachin businessman Ahdang (also Danggu Tang). According to local residents the fighting in Putao district, which has continued for more than two weeks, began after government forces and the Ahdang militia attacked a KIA Battalion 7 post near Nhka Ga village on August 28.

Rev. Dr. Hkalam Samsun, General Secretary of Kachin Baptist Convention (KBC) told the Kachin News Group that his organization had confirmed that Ram Mai and his family were physically assaulted by army troops in front of several witnesses. Due to the ongoing skirmishes in the area it has been impossible to determine Ram Mai and his family's current whereabouts, according to the KBC chief.

According to local residents tensions remain high in the Nhka Ga area, where government troops from Infantry Battalion No. 46, IB No. 137 and IB No. 138 and an unknown artillery battalion have increased their presence significantly over the past few weeks.

                          Transportation and aid assistance blocked

Since the fighting started in the Putao district at the end of August hundreds of government troops have been deployed to the area. All forms of civilian transportation to the areas near to where the fighting has taken place have been blocked by government forces, according to local sources.

The most senior military commander based in Putao, the head of the Military Strategic Command (MSC), has prevented both trapped villagers and those hiding in the forests from receiving outside assistance and humanitarian relief, according to members of the Putao Baptist Association. Farmers who live in Nhka Ga and the surrounding area have been banned from returning to their farms, local villagers KNG.

Ferry transportation between the town Machyangbaw and Nhka Ga along the Mali Hka river has also been halted by government forces since the end of August, according to local villagers.

More Burma army troops sent to Pangwa

                            THURSDAY, 19 SEPTEMBER 2013 10:00 KNG NEWS

Over the last several weeks hundreds of Burma army troops have been deployed to the Pangwa area to reinforce pro-government border guard force (BGF) units, according to one former member of the militia that didn’t want their name used for security concerns.

                            pangwa-kachin-map

The area in in northeastern Kachin state is major trade point between Burma and China. Pangwa used to be the longstanding capital of the now defunct New Democratic Army-Kachin (NDA-K); a ceasefire group led by Zahkung Ting Ying (also spelled Za Khun Ting Ring). But in 2009 the NDA-K de-banded when its army of about 1,000 troops was absorbed into the BGF.

The NDA-K is the successor of a Kachin Independence Organization unit led by Ting Ying. The military leader broke-away in 1968 to join forces with the Burma Communist Party (BCP). In 1989, following the collapse of the BCP, Ting Ying created the NDA-K. The armed group quickly reached a ceasefire with the central government. NDA-K's deal with Burma's military regime allowed the group to seize some of the cross border timber trade at Kambaiti and Pangwa resulting in extensive clear cutting of valuable forests in Kachin state.

Ting Ying was elected as an MP in 2010 and has been an active supporter of the military's campaign against the KIO. Last year he was photographed distributing guns to ex-NDA-K soldiers that were transformed into BGF troops based in Pangwa. Since the fighting began in June 2011 Tin Ying has repeatedly been warned by the KIO to withdraw from Pangwa or be “crushed”.

Despite Ting Ying's boisterous public appearances the BGF units under his command have fared badly in the battlefield since the start of the conflict. Dozens of Kachin BGF troops are believed to have been killed around Pangwa. According to sources close to the ex-NDA-K troops, the high death toll is a direct result of their Burmese military superiors repeatedly sending them first into battle against the KIO while favoring their own regular army troops for "safer" military maneuvers.

Sources in Kachin state told the Kachin News Group many government troops have been deployed to areas controlled by the KIA's brigade 1 between the Mali Hka and N’Mai Hka rivers. Some of the reinforcements are reportedly heading south from Putao District in Machyangbaw Township. Other units have arrived from the Myitkyina-Sumprabum highways. Units have also come from the upper N’Mai Hka river area in advance of what many observers claim is part of their dry season offensive strategy. Last month, soldiers repeatedly attacked KIA 1st brigade troops ending a relative lull in fighting in the region.

                            - Despite the Burmese regime still fighting rebels, Burma is in fact making a lot of deals with western and other companies.

                            - If however they cannot make peace with rebels and the Rohingyas start up their liberation campaign in ernest, the Burmese regime may face a 3 front war on the east, west and north.

Dalai Lama to Burmese monks : Enough anti- Rohingya violence

The Tibetan spiritual leader recalls the teachings of the Buddha and appeals to the Burmese monks : no more attacks and violence against "your Muslim brothers and sisters ." Aung San Suu Kyi calls for amendments to the Constitution to solve the ethnic problem . In the sixth anniversary of the Saffron Revolution monks call on authorities to apologize .

Yangon ( AsiaNews / Agencies) - The Dalai Lama has appealed to Burmese Buddhist Monks asking them to act according to the principles of the Buddha, avoiding violence or targeted attacks against the Rohingya Muslim minority in Myanmar. "When resentment or anger towards your Muslim brothers and sisters emerge - said the Tibetan spiritual leader , during an annual peace conference held recently in Prague, Czech Republic - please , remember [ the principles ] of the Buddhist faith . " He added, "to be sure" that in following the teachings of the Enlightened One, the Burmese monks will "protect their Muslim brothers and sisters who are increasingly victims."

The Burmese Buddhist monks became involved in a campaign against the Muslims, with protests and, in some cases, direct attacks against the community or individual groups. In particular, the anti- Rohingya violence in the western state of Rakhine erupted in June 2012 caused at least 200 deaths - especially among the Muslim minority - and more than 140 thousand displaced people.

In recent days, the Burmese religious marked the sixth anniversary of the "Saffron Revolution" , which flared up between August and September of 2007 and was violently repressed by the junta , with more than 30 deaths and hundreds of monks arrested . For years, religious people rejected offers by the military and would not provide their functions and celebrations in protest against the brutal repression. Leaders of the Burmese Buddhist movement confirm that the ban will not be lifted "as long as there will be no official apology" from the authorities. Among the aims of this sixth anniversary of the massacre, the promotion "of nationality and religion , peace and national reconciliation and a significant progress on the democratic path of Myanmar."

Meanwhile, the opposition leader and Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi , on her recent European tour, touched on the issue of violence against minorities in Myanmar. The "Lady " points the finger at the current Constitution - written by the military dictatorship and ratified in a farce referendum in 2008, an emergency text due to Cyclone Nargis - emphasizing that it must be "modified" to eradicate the roots of conflicts. " The ethnic problem - said the parliamentary leader of the National League for Democracy ( NLD) - will not be solved with this Constitution, which does not meet the aspirations of the ethnic nationalities ." She adds that minorities must be guaranteed " safety first ", because " they feel that they do not have equal access to justice".

In the last two years, violence between Buddhists and Muslims have raised tensions between the different ethnic groups and religious denominations that define Myanmar, especially in the western state of Rakhine where clashes have broken out between native Arakanese and Rohingya Muslims. The rape and murder of a young Buddhist woman sparked a spiral of terror, which caused hundreds of deaths and houses destroyed, and displaced at least 160,000 people, many of whom have sought refuge outside Myanmar, trying to escape attacks by the 969 Movement, a Buddhist extremist organisation. According to United Nations estimates, there are at least 800,000 Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar. For the Myanmar government they are illegal immigrants, which is why they are victims of abuse and persecution.

                              - The Burmese carried out attacks yet again on Muslims a few weeks back.
