US to hold direct peace talks with Taliban

United States will engage with Taliban in Qatar where Afghan-based armed group opened office, White House officials say.

The United States will engage in direct peace negotiations with the Taliban in Qatar next week, aimed at achieving peace in Afghanistan, senior White House officials have said.
Tuesday's announcement came as the Taliban opened an office in the Qatari capital, Doha, to help start talks on ending the 12-year-old conflict, saying it wanted a political solution that would bring about a just government and end foreign occupation.
Taliban representative Mohammed Naeem told a news conference at the office in Doha that the armed group wanted good relations with Afghanistan's neighbouring countries.

The US officials said that the process would likely be lengthy, insisting that the Taliban break ties with al-Qaeda, end violence, and accept the Afghan constitution, including protection for women and minorities.
"This is but the first step in what will be a long road," one US official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.
    Secret discussions
A senior representative of the Afghan government confirmed that talks were scheduled with the Taliban and said the progress was made after secret discussions with the group.
"Peace talks will certainly take place between the Taliban and the High Peace Council," said the senior official, referring to the body created by Afghan President Hamid Karzai in 2010 to broker peace with the insurgency.
The Taliban has until now said it would not countenance peace talks with the Karzai government, it calls a "stooge" of the United States and other Western nations.
The peace talks, if they go ahead, could also lead to a reduction in fighting across Afghanistan, the official said.
"We hope that the attacks carried out by the Taliban in Afghanistan will reduce while we talk peace; there is no point in talking if the bombs continue to kill civilians," he said.
The announcement came on the same day that the Taliban opened their long-delayed office in the Qatari capital of Doha.
In a move that may anger the Afghan government, the white Taliban flag was at his side, and a large sign behind him proclaimed the office of the "Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan", the name the Taliban used during their brief national rule in the 1990s.
Both events may have been timed to coincide with a ceremony on Tuesday to mark the beginning of the final phase of security transition from the US-led coalition to the Afghan state.

There are people today who think that admitting God’s absolute greatness decreases the value and importance of humans in the creation, as if God and mankind are rivals competing in greatness and power. Meanwhile I feel that whenever our perception of God’s greatness increases, with it we become greater, because we are the creation of a great God.

if the taliban want to negotiate, why are they negotiating with the americans?? why not the afghan government?? and if the americans wanted to negotiate then what the **** were they barbequing afghans in afghanistan for 12 years then? could they not have done that in the first place?
it's like they are saying to the taliban, here, we are all done with it. it's yours again.
for the while that they were in afghanistan, they did not allow the afghan army to take charge, build confidence or supply them with proper weapons and tools at the least. now they are handing over the country to the same people that they supposedly were attempting to rescue afghans from in the first place and the afghan government doesn't even get to have a say in it.
bicker amongst each other over pity differences while your country is literally being pimped around from one hand to the other by these people.

americans call the shots in afg, it only makes sense to negotiate with them first. the afg gov't will go along with anything the americans decide, not the other way around.

because good goverments are built by the courage of strong willed honest societies that have the betterment of the country in mind. that happens when at the least, you give some support to it. our people have been blessed by the ignorance of greedy individuals who teach others to mock, condemn and discredit the government.
why should our goverment be strong?? where will this strength come from?? what has anyone invested in it??

Its the afghan government they havent been able to establish themselves as a political counterweight to the taliban, the taliban and the US do not view them as strong enough to hold any sway over masses.

you're right about the US strategy though, they completely blew it.

Even Adobe Photoshop can't change me.

A line[Durrand line] of hatred that raised a wall between the two brothers -Hamid Karzai

For generations, the Hindus of India prayed for deliverance from "the venom of the cobra, the teeth of the tiger and the vengeance of the Afghan."

The men of Kábul and Khilj also went home; and whenever they were questioned about the Musulmáns of the Kohistán (the mountains), and how matters stood there, they said, "Don't call it Kohistán, but Afghánistán; for there is nothing there but Afgháns and disturbances." Thus it is clear that for this reason the people of the country call their home in their own language Afghánistán, and themselves Afgháns. The people of India call them Patán; but the reason for this is not known. But it occurs to me, that when, under the rule of Muhammadan sovereigns, Musulmáns first came to the city of Patná, and dwelt there, the people of India (for that reason) called them Patáns—but God knows!

We should all know this whole war was for heroin by now. Taliban and the Pashtun Mafia are the biggest producers of it. No wonder they want peace talks.

your assuming the americans actually care about afghans. come on, don't you read history, they armed warlords to the teeth against the soviets and then left it to kill each other after their(americans) objective was done.

The resistance is bigger than the Taliban. the commanders on the ground have their own reasons why they fight US forces and the ANA. If you look at wardak alone, the kochis fight the US not because they hate americans but because they have beef with the hazaras. All America is doing is getting in the middle of a fight that is not theirs. Those Kochis and hazaras are not going to give a shyt about any talks in Qatar. You have commanders taking money in exchange of putting down arms and when the money dries up , they go back to fighting.

Besides that, didn't they try this already like a year ago. Are the Taliban not just waiting the US out.

The US has decided to stop protecting your kind in Kabul which explains the frustration you have. Are you experiencing the withdrawal syndrome from the high that is greed.
