What Israel Air Strikes on Syria Reveal About Blueprint for Iran Attack

Will U.S. Get Advance Warning of Attack on Nukes?

    By Nathan Guttman

    Published May 08, 2013, issue of May 17, 2013.

Washington — Israel’s punishing air strikes against Syria highlight the delicate dance about sharing information with the U.S. — a balance that provides a blueprint for a possible attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities.
Following a pattern set in decades of military cooperation, Israel did not provide the U.S. with advance warning about its intention to launch two strikes on advanced missiles near Damascus, sticking to boilerplate statements about the need to “take any action needed.”
But insiders say prior consulations would be required before any Israeli attack on Iran, because — unlike the Syria attacks — such a strike would likely drag the U.S. into military intervention of one kind or another.
Aaron David Miller, a former State Department official involved in U.S.-Israel relations, called an attack on Iran “the big one” and stressed that Israel would have to share information at the highest level of decision-makers.
“It’s not something that you can come on Sunday and say ‘we’re attacking on Tuesday,’” Miller said, suggesting that approval from the U.S. would take some time.
Still, even in this hypothetical case, the White House would not expect Israel to provide exact details in advance.
“It’s inconceivable that the Israelis will say: ‘We’re going to attack Iran on this day at this hour,” said Elliott Abrams, former deputy national security adviser to President George W. Bush.
He predicted that the U.S. would not require such specific information and Israel would be reluctant to provide it, fearing leaks from the administration. But Abrams agreed that Israeli officials would tip their hand that an attack was certain, even if they withheld some details.
“Maybe they’ll come and say: ‘we reached the point of high probability,’” said Abrams, who is now with the Council on Foreign Relations.
The air strikes on Syria took place on May 3 and 5 and were aimed at warehouses storing dozens of advanced surface-to-surface Fateh-100 missiles.
The missiles, provided by Iran, were on route to Hezbollah in Lebanon and were viewed by Israel as game changing weapons in its ongoing battle against the Lebanon-based terror group. The U.S. administration was quick to make clear it had received no advance notice about the attacks.
President Obama, in an interview while travelling to Costa Rica, announced his support for Israel’s action, saying he believes “Israelis justifiably have to guard against the transfer of advanced weaponry to terrorist organizations like Hezbollah.”
The decision not to provide advance notification to the United States and not to seek pre-approval fits a long standing pattern of military coordination between the two countries, one that can best be described as following the rule of “don’t ask, don’t tell.”
Ambiguity is helpful for both sides. For Israel, determined to prove its sovereignty in making security-related decisions, lack of advance notice makes clear all decisions were made independently. For the United States, as it tries to avoid taking responsibility for Israeli actions, this ambiguity provides a safe distance from the events. “The American side wants to be kept in the loop, but at the same time, the U.S. also wants to maintain some deniability,” said a former Israeli official who has dealt closely with this intersection of relations. “The result,” the official added, “is a compromise between the need to know and the need not to know.”
History shows that the calculus about whether Israel needs to provide details to the U.S. depends on the degree to which American interests are directly involved.
In the case of Syria, there was no direct impact on the U.S. Hence, there was no need for any advance warning.
“I don’t think this is terribly consequential to the United Stats,” said Miller, who currently serves as vice president for new initiatives at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars.
Even without specific advance warning, the Obama administration was not surprised by the Israeli action. In private conversations with their American counterparts, as well as in public statements, Israelis have made clear they will not tolerate transfer of weapons to Hezbollah through Syria. This was enough to convey the message that an attack could occur.
“We do not have a green light, red light relationship with Israel,” Abrams said.
The policy of ambiguity in sharing exact details of military action has been honed in the crucible of repeated Israeli military actions during Mideast crises.
In 1981 Israel took out Iraq’s Osirak nuclear reactor in a bold air strike thousands of miles from its border. Israeli officials had raised their concerns over the Iraqi nuclear program with the highest levels of the Reagan administration, but upon hearing America’s reservations regarding taking action against the nuclear site, Israel launched a surprise attack, triggering a furious response from Washington.
Since, the two nations improved their communications and avoided friction over military actions. The decision to start two widespread military campaigns in Gaza and the second Lebanon war followed the pattern of discussing the policy in general terms with the U.S. in advance while stopping short of actual notification about the exact timing, scope and operational details of the upcoming attacks.
This system was put to its most significant test with the September 2007 attack on Syria’s nuclear site, which was being built in northern Syria. Elliott Abrams recalled in his recent book “Tested by Zion: The Bush administration and the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict,” discussions held between the two governments before the attack. Israel expressed its concerns over the evidence that Syria was building a nuclear reactor and when the U.S. suggested dealing with it by diplomatic means rather than launching a strike, Israel made clear it would consider a military option, but provided no details.
“It took two months before the Israelis attacked,” Abrams said in an interview, “the only advance notice we had was the discussion months before.” Still, the Bush administration did not condemn Israel for the attack.
For America, experts and former officials agree, not knowing the details is, more often than not, the best case scenario. Specific advance knowledge of Israel’s military plan could imply that the United States gave its stamp of approval to the operation and would also suggest that Israel cannot act without prior approval from America. Both would be unwelcome.
“There is a desire on both sides to make clear that these are sovereign national security decisions,” Abrams said.

What Israel Air Strikes on Syria Reveal About Blueprint for Iran Attack

US or Israel cannot do airstrikes on Iran because Iran has the anti-gravitational technology which can travel at the speed of sound and capture any aeroplane flying over Irani airspace, Jetfighters/drones etc are all useless, this technology is the most advanced military technology in the world (only Iran has it) the only way they can bomb Iran is from the sea or ground and the Iranians are working on that aswel. Iran is not like all the other countries the west has invaded, its a different animal all together.

Manzareh one thing about the USA is that if its global interests are truly threatened, it would go as far as Nuking a country. Suppose England decides to play bully[like Japan once did], it would not hesitate to pull a Nagasaki and Hiroshoma on London or Birmingham. Frankly put, Iran is NOT threatening US interests, it is threatening Israeli interests which is why the US is so reluctant in interfering.

A line[Durrand line] of hatred that raised a wall between the two brothers -Hamid Karzai

For generations, the Hindus of India prayed for deliverance from "the venom of the cobra, the teeth of the tiger and the vengeance of the Afghan."

The men of Kábul and Khilj also went home; and whenever they were questioned about the Musulmáns of the Kohistán (the mountains), and how matters stood there, they said, "Don't call it Kohistán, but Afghánistán; for there is nothing there but Afgháns and disturbances." Thus it is clear that for this reason the people of the country call their home in their own language Afghánistán, and themselves Afgháns. The people of India call them Patán; but the reason for this is not known. But it occurs to me, that when, under the rule of Muhammadan sovereigns, Musulmáns first came to the city of Patná, and dwelt there, the people of India (for that reason) called them Patáns—but God knows!

This is a bold claim. What do you make of this, is it a lure?

They probably won't think twice about using a nuke because of how cowardly they are, nukes are made to kill huge amounts of innocent people and poison the land - perhaps if more people around the world actually know how evil america is as you've also acknowledged then countries would stick together against the big bully. Saying that though I bet more than a few country's would also want to see America nuked.

Not sure if the link opens properly on my phone. no story but the title seems sarcastic, i don't see the context of the word 'trembles' being used.

There are many good people here just as there are back home. No one should experience that sort of treatment - not Japanese not Muslim nations and not Americans. Remember, the people may, to some degree reflect their government but in general what I can say is that in my day to day interaction I meet people who want to understand the other (folks like Ron Paul) and who want to avoid conflict as well.

We, the common people of the world have to start thinking in terms of the small elite in these governments as manipulating the peoples generally to their detriment to fight wars against our interests.

It is not America against the world or Afghanistan against America or Pakistan against Afghanistan or India against Pakistan. There are so many destitute people in these countries being lied to and manipulated by these elites and the other bloodsuckers that make money off perpetual war. That is how these elites maintain their hold on power.

The real struggle is the common man against the elites that are playing chess with all our lives. Once the rural man in America realizes it is not in his interest to be cannon fodder as does the rural Afghan and as each of these people refuses to be manipulated and realizes the humanity of the other - you will see a different world bro. They may never love eachother but they will agree to stay out of eachothers way and world.

Remember the story of Yunus in Al-Kitab my friend... that is what I see. There is a lot of potential here. The fascinating thing is that each time sometime occurs and each time the media tries to spin it - the sales of Qurans goes up.

That being said, strategically the era of mutually assured destruction was relatively peaceful during the Russo American conflict years.

Ov course there are good and bad people bro, just seems to me that people are being fundamentally lied to on a daily basis, I can understand it happening in 3rd world or deprived countries but this mass hypnosis shouldn't be happening in a country with so much freedom of knowledge, expression and technology. How ironic it is that the public of 'home of the brave and land of the free' cannot unchain themselves from a small elite. Things like media indoctrination obviously happens here in the UK aswel but they make it look credible and believable to some degree, if I put on a american channel or news its so unbelievably biased and exaggerated, makes me wonder how people actual believe some of the stuff i read or see. Most of the american sources I come across are dramatised to such an extent that its hilarious to me let alone an intellectual that knows his/her stuff and has sound knowledges of world affairs, Can't begin to imagine what the children are being fed in the school sectors.

If irans response is anything like syrias, killing fellow muslims while completely turning bitch against israel, the jews have nothing to worry about.
There are people today who think that admitting God’s absolute greatness decreases the value and importance of humans in the creation, as if God and mankind are rivals competing in greatness and power. Meanwhile I feel that whenever our perception of God’s greatness increases, with it we become greater, because we are the creation of a great God.

                        Admin Khan,

Iran has and does threaten US interests when it trades its oil in gold. This undermines the US currency which has value only because it used to be the only currency that a nation could use for oil transactions.

Iran also has threatened US and Gulf nations interests (both military and strategic i.e closing the Strait of Hormuz to oil shipment) in the event of a strike by either Israel or the US.

Israel has considerable clout over the US Senate and Congress. This should be noted from the resolutions that have been passed, several now that pledge that the US will economically and militarily back an Israeli war.

Which is why Iran has sanctions up the rear, including new sanctions that were applied this Friday. My point stands. If you threaten U.S interests, the U.S will make you pay for it, and Iran is paying an incredibly heavy cost.

Prime minister’s trip to the Golan comes amid growing concern about possible Iranian victory in Syria.

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon observed a Golani Brigade war drill on the Golan Heights on Wednesday, making it clear they picked that location to send a signal of Israeli determination in the face of a rapidly changing situation in Syria.
“An exercise on the Golan Heights is not just a theoretical exercise,” Netanyahu said after watching a brief part of the multi-day drill on the central Golan. “The situation around us has changed swiftly. It is volatile and dynamic, and we need to be prepared accordingly.”
                            Related:

While a few months ago there was concern in Jerusalem that a rebel victory in Syria could bring al-Qaida forces precariously close to Israel’s border, there is now increasing concern of an Iranian victory in Syria, and its negative implications for Israel.
Netanyahu, who was last on the Golan in January, said that even with all available technology, battles are won by determination and “the ability to break the enemy and instill in them the fear of death.
“I want to tell you from experience that battle is the kingdom of uncertainty – regardless of how much training and preparation,” he said.
The prime minister said he hopes Israel will not “be tested,” but that if it is “we will withstand any challenge.
“We are not seeking to challenge anyone, but no one will harm the State of Israel without a response – a strong and resolute response,” he said.
Ya’alon said he was impressed by the level of training and readiness exhibited by the Golani soldiers who, together with other combat units, “could find themselves called into battle at short notice. Hence this drill, like others held these days, has a special significance, at this time and in this sector.”
He warned that Israel would not tolerate a violation of its sovereignty or attacks on its soldiers or civilians, either on the northern border or from the Gaza Strip.
“It is important to make clear to those on the other side of the border who are planning to harm us in one way or another, that we are ready and determined to act with full force,” Ya’alon said.
As Netanyahu was observing a few minutes of the military exercise, he picked up a field phone and engaged in some playful banter with an officer on the other end who used the opportunity to sing the praises of the Golani Brigade.
“We are ready to carry out any mission,” the officer told the prime minister. When Netanyahu replied, the officer warned him that those on the “other side” – meaning in Syria – were listening in to the conversation.
“Let them hear and know we can pass over to any side,” Netanyahu responded cryptically.
Netanyahu said the exercise, which included infantry, tanks and an unmanned aerial vehicle that he took a special interest in, showed that “we are moving with the times.”
