  • Caretaker premier: Achakzai emerges as PML-N’s favourite

    LAHORE:

Pakhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party (PkMAP) Chairman Mahmood Khan Achakzai has become the candidate of choice for the Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) to run the caretaker set-up before the next parliamentary election, The Express Tribune has learnt.

This emerged after a meeting between a PkMAP delegation, headed by Achakzai, with Nawaz Sharif and other senior PML-N leaders at Raiwind on Wednesday.

The two sides discussed the makeup of the interim set-up and Nawaz asked Achakzai whether he objected to his name being put forward as a candidate, according to sources privy to the meeting.

Achakzai endorsed PML-N’s nomination list which also included his name, expressing in clear terms that if he was given the chance, then he would try and serve the country to the best of his abilities.

Sharif informed Achakzai that the PML-N would include his name as one of the two candidates in the final list for the slot of caretaker prime minister, which would be forwarded to the incumbent Prime Minister, Raja Pervaiz Ashraf.

The PML-N had earlier finalised seven names for a caretaker prime minister, including Achakzai, Attaullah Khan Mengal, Justice (retd) Nasir Aslam Zahid, Rasool Buksh Palejo, former Supreme Court Bar Association president Asma Jahangir, Justice (retd) Shakirullah Jan and Qazi Hussain Ahmad.

The party has officially forwarded these names to the opposition parties for consultation, following which it will finalise two names for the caretaker premier slot.

After meeting with Achakzai, Nawaz gave the go ahead to the party’s senior leadership to include his name in the final list. They added that the PML-N chief asked Achakzai to begin talks with the heads of political parties to get their approval of his nomination as the caretaker prime minister.

    Political alliance in Balochistan

According to the PML-N’s think tank, the party has assessed that if contesting alone, it would succeed in winning only five seats out of a total of 14 seats allocated to Balochistan in the National Assembly. However, if it formed an alliance with other political parties in Balochsitan, it could potentially win 11 seats.

According to the participants of the meeting, the PkMAP usually wins around five seats from the Pashtun-dominated belt in Balochistan in the NA. Although the JUI-F is the principle opponent of the PkMAP in this belt, the PML-N will support PkMAP candidates.

it would be a very very good selection if it happens, achakzai is gem of a politician and a very good choice

A consensus seems to be emerging amongst almost all political parties on Mahmood Khan Achakzai as caretaker prime minister, it has been learnt. According to sources, all political parties except Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM) are agreed on appointing Pakhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party (PkMAP) Chairman Mahmood Khan Achakzai as a caretaker prime minister.

However, it is unclear whether Achakzai will accept this responsibility as he is Chairman of a political party and if he becomes caretaker prime minister his party cannot take part in the upcoming general election. When contacted, sources in Pakistan People's Party (PPP) and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) said that both the parties had agreed on Mahmood Achakzai. The two major parties are assuming that Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) would not oppose Achakzai for the caretaker prime Minister slot.

Sources further added that the PPP may take the establishment into confidence on Achakzai as caretaker prime minister in the next few days. They said that announcement of caretaker prime minister would be made within the next few days. Achakzi had earlier denied inclusion of his name in the list of would-be caretaker prime ministers. However he unambiguously endorsed PML-N's nomination list which included his name stating that if he was given the chance he would serve the country to achieve the goal of transparent elections.

The PML-N had earlier finalised seven names for the post of caretaker prime minister. They were Achakzai, Attaullah Khan Mengal, former Justice Nasir Aslam Zahid, Rasool Buksh Palejo, former Supreme Court Bar Association president Asma Jahangir, former Justice Shakirullah Jan and Qazi Hussain Ahmad. However, the Tahirul Qadri 'game' reportedly led to deletion of names of former members of the judiciary from the list.

The sources said that after meeting with Achakzai, Nawaz Sharif gave a go-ahead to his party's senior leadership to include Achakzai's name in the final list and urged Achakzai to begin talks with heads of political parties to get their approval on his nomination as the caretaker prime minister.

Achakzai sahab is the only politician whom I deeply respect. If Pakistan wants to get out of this mess, play boys like Imran Khan are incapable for the job, Achakzai can save AFPAK.

A line[Durrand line] of hatred that raised a wall between the two brothers -Hamid Karzai

For generations, the Hindus of India prayed for deliverance from "the venom of the cobra, the teeth of the tiger and the vengeance of the Afghan."

The men of Kábul and Khilj also went home; and whenever they were questioned about the Musulmáns of the Kohistán (the mountains), and how matters stood there, they said, "Don't call it Kohistán, but Afghánistán; for there is nothing there but Afgháns and disturbances." Thus it is clear that for this reason the people of the country call their home in their own language Afghánistán, and themselves Afgháns. The people of India call them Patán; but the reason for this is not known. But it occurs to me, that when, under the rule of Muhammadan sovereigns, Musulmáns first came to the city of Patná, and dwelt there, the people of India (for that reason) called them Patáns—but God knows!

The politics in Pakistan is just like a coal-mine. Achakzai Saib is one of the few who worked in this coal-mine for years and didn't make their hands dirty.

I personally think that people like him should retire from the day to day politics and form a Think tank sort of thing for the betterment of the country and it's people.

This is indeed a good move. I think he should accept it and let the upcoming elections be free and fair.

Achakzai did not participate in the NRO or those 'elections' and hence is not affiliated with the gov/military. However, can someone please list me what his views (like with regards to the US/NATO war in Afghanistan and Pakistan support for it).

He thinks until terrorists are taken out, there wouldn't be any peace in thew world. In that respect, he is in favor of UN mandated operations against terrorists.

This moment, these coming few month will be the most crucial in Pakistan's history. If Pakistan is to survive as a nation in the coming future it will need to show itself capable of upholding the democratic process.

ISI/Establishment and god knows who it really is DOES NOT want a smooth transition here and that is why out of no where they have this character Tahir-ul-Qadri heading to Islamabad to derail that process. And to counter this move the most powerful personality that both PPP and PMLN can rely on to face off is mahmood achakzai. I think that 14th january will happen and depending how much things get out of control people will see achakzai nominated as interim PM within a couple of days..There isnt a better man to counter the establishment at this point in my opinion.

I deeply respect Achakzai and for me his party is the only true Pashtun nationalist party in Pakistan. His becoming the Premier of Pakistan will be a history. Pashtuns will be once again represented in Pakistan at the highest level. In past we had examples like Ayub Khan and Ghulam Ishaq. This will also serve Pakistan as a state that they do not discrminate and Pashtuns can have the highest position although numerically they are about 16 % of Pakistan.

In the current situation Pakistan needs some strong people who can say NO to many powerful men and institutions and I guess Mehmood Khan Achakzai will be the right option. About his refusal all the news are wrong. I heard his interview yesterday and he said that he will think about it if any such offer is made to him and said that for the betterment of the country and it's people he will always be there.

He would be the first Pashtun PM from Pakistan. The first pashtun president was ghulam ishaq from bannu.
