The whole point of the second Amendment is lost on people here. The idea behind is to ensure that the government can not do excesses against the people. The goal of tyrants is to take away the people's ability to resist. That is why Jefferson and others were so ardently in support of local militias having the ability to defend themselves from government brutality.

Admittedly, republicans have walked a double faced line wherein they support a massive defense and spending budget that forces Americans to pay welfare to nations around the world without their explicit consent and then at the same time rally people to their side with the defense of the second amendment stance.

On the flip side, the meaning of the second amendment may be moot only because the Americans themselves have surrendered to the single elite party that pertends to be two different parties. At this point, they do not recognize that the single elite party will do whatever it wants domestically and with foreign policy. Both republicans and democrats supported the massive bailouts against the will of the majority of the Americans. Both parties voted for extending theatres of war. Both parties have extended teh ability of law enforcement agencies to probe deeper into their lives on false pretexts. If push came to shove and the people began to foment rebellion Lincoln's actions and Eisenhower's actions as well as Kennedys show that they have no qualms about using the full might of the military which is greater than ever before, against their own.

Oh. This is a horrible news. My heart goes to the poor families whose kids were killed. I think it is imperative now to ban guns. Rather guns should be banned world-wide.

Why not analyze the problem like scientists? There is a common trend amongst these people: all young men from the American public school system. People need to think about of the box. Dysfunctionality happens on different levels. This level of dysfunction is obviously psychopathology but what about the other kids that also go on to contribute to societal dyfunctionality in some way or another. A school system that used to send kids to harvard and around the world is now turning out burger flippers and disillusioned people who pay 250,000 for an arts degree and then find they cannot declare bankruptcy. Some are saying this behavior may be the next big bubble.

We need to collect the data on these young men and really use objective means to analyze them.

From what I recall, the American school system at the public level shifted away from being a place of learning to a place of socializing. Kids began to look at high school as the end all be all of life not realizing 4 years goes by rapidly and is not the completion of life. College as well became not about competing, but about "expanding your mind" via social interactions that have nothing to do with learning.

So Toramana what I think happens is that human beings forget that at our root base, we are all a part of the animal kingdom. We develop like many other animals and have the same environmental and hormonal pathways that affect our behavior either pathologically or non.

Here are additional things I noted about the commanality of all of these characters from the Columbine kids before and afterwards:

-All come from public school backgrounds where heirarchies and group based mentalities pervade. Add the sexually charged environment to that and you create a miserable situation for some.
-Many are neither fabulously rich of poor
-None of the shooters come from sex segregated schools

What may happen to cause this psychopathology to declare itself is multiple factors. After all, day in and day out millions are being churned out by this system and not everyone goes on to do something horrible. However, its the same with heart disease. Some people in a household may end up having clogged arteries and some dont. A variety of factors, genetic and environmental influence the declaration of such pathologies. The triggers in these young men's environment may be just the right constellation of things to reach the tipping point. Perhaps, in the environment that they are in, when a heirarchy is established their place on the totem pole convinces them that there is no way out and that they are destined to be in the bottom rungs of society. Various social factors within these public school systems determine ones place in hte heirarchy.

Admittedly one answer is to remove fire-arms in totallity and enforce the law with vigor. The issue with this is that many Americans have bunkers of weapons - it is probably the most armed nation on earth. Where I grew up neighbors had at least a 22 rifle for each child. So what will happen is the black market will, for a time, grow or these weapons will be grandfathered in to make the law not retroactive.

The other answer is to analyze the data points, rigorously examine for commonalities retrospectivelly and then try to use such data in guidance counseling to identify such troubled youth and guide them or put them in a more suitable environment.

There is a more pervasive and insidious change happening to the psyche of people that needs serious exploration; such cases in US, the school children killing in Germany. Although CNN reported this morning, 'second serious event in American history', AlJazeera reeled off over half dozen guns in schools incidences during last decade in the US.
Gun law argument applies to other states where this law is not stringent as in connecticut, issue is how the guns became accessible (from locked gun safe), and more generally, what is happening to the these young people from countries that offer ideals (such as rights, freedom, democracy, health, education, welfare) and offers protection (from hunger, calamity and injustice), what is driving these individuals to execute such actions, in numbers that should be statistical freaks, obviously not, these events are becoming more frequent.

I begin with tenuous concept of moral decay amongst those lucky enough to be idulging in the perceived good life in nations with developement, organisation, institutions that foster development of nation and people, . . . . an moral decay, apathy etc due to the fact individuals are no longer struggling to survive, instead wallowing in relative indulgence and excess.

The second part of your commentary stands out. The issue here is that if school is once again, in the US made to be a place of LEARNING and not a place of socializing, proms, American Pie etc the mission of all the children in that institution changes immediatly. They realize that they are not there to hang out or to earn the prize for best smile. Instead they are there to test their intelligence and develop real world skills. The moral decay you mention is what I am hinting at above. It has nothing to do with less "Jesus" in the schools as that wont solve anything. But one might say that if Jesus did go to school he probably would expect to learn Calculus in Calculus class and not about what Tommy's promenade plans are or what Jill's latest fake ID looks like. If Tommy is forced to derive equations like Billy and Tina is to do the same is Jill then their ability to attend will be contingent on their progress. If they want to hang out and socialize they can do it on their own time or be fired and expelled.

The issue also Torkham is that many of the teachers here in the public system are dumb as rocks too. These are the kids who were permanently out partying and pursuing HOD degrees on the side. That is usually why all the kids who go to division 2 and 3 schools and in earnest think they will get an NFL contract get a teaching degree and then cold reality hits them when the NFL doesnt sign them. So they end up somewhere teaching math and join a teachers union. Thats not to say all teachers are dumb. One brilliant electrical engineer I knew wanted to get an MS and then teach inner city and has done so. But he is a rarity.

Look at the sexual epidemic as well. Randolph can probably tell you that at least once a month some teacher somewhere ends up getting busted for having an affair with a teenage boy. The biggest case here was the Mary K Latorneau case. How the heck, in the most advanced nation ever did these two find the time to diddle when the kid should be learning?
