Pakistan thought that in order to further its foreign policy objectives in Kashmir and Afghanistan, it was expedient to employ the services of mercenary militants. It was like playing with fire. Musharraf himself traced all the militancy and terrorism back to Pakistan's involvement in the Afghan war."If a nation expects to be ignorant and free, in a state of civilization, it expects what never was and never will be".

The Waziristan-based groups used to cross the Durrand to attack NATO occasionally. They did not have very strong affiliations with the Pakistanis. After a lot of US pressure, Musharraf was forced to attack Waziristan. In 2004, the Pakistani army in Waziristan was completely routed. Neither the soldiers nor the public wanted war with the militants there, who were seen as Mujahideen.Originally posted by shlombayHow do you explain all the terrorism going on in Pakistan?
What we know as the Taliban are actually a number of fragmented groups. The ISI's boys are the Haqqanis so they're not involved in any anti-Pakistan activities. However, the Mehsud Taliban have mixed allegiances. Therefore, a few attacks on civilians were carried out with remote-controlled car-bombs and they were not the work of any of the Taliban groups. They were either CIA or ISI attacks aimed at shifting the public's support towards the military option. The Mehsuds, now backed by India, carried out a series of attacks in Lahore and Islamabad after South Waziristan was besieged."If a nation expects to be ignorant and free, in a state of civilization, it expects what never was and never will be".
